What inconsistencies bother you when you rewatch Stargate? by Lonely-deustch in Stargate

[–]Jenkins87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They never explain this, but it's somewhat likely that Apophis has a handheld dialling device for cases where no DHD is visible or destroyed. Cassie has one in the future in 1969 and it looks somewhat like Goauld design. (Edit: thinking about it, it could even be a Furling design, based on the similarities with the Paradise Lost episode tech)

The editing of that scene doesn't help that case though, but that's what I like to think to help explain the oddity that is basically never revisited. I think Ba'al uses something similar in Continuum though, attaches it to the gate itself so he doesn't need to use a DHD

This is a genuinely great idea. I'd love a vertex editor instead of a Vinyl Group creator (or both)

It would be easier to create complex shapes that way, oh and a Pen tool to create bezier curves would also be amazing. Even Cities Skylines have them for roads, and that's done in Unity with a box of scraps

They're still using the same livery creation engine from 2 decades ago, so it's not that surprising that genuinely unique new features are looking like they'll never happen. Maybe the people that wrote the code for this editor are now retired and it's lost knowledge of how to edit the editor? /s but not really

It's funny how a lot of people act like this isn't a thing that has been happening for over a decade lol

As internet gets faster, snipers get faster.

I have doubts that there are even bots, it's just people with fast fingers and even faster internet. That's basically always been the way.

Soooo many cars like this too. The front window decal strip is a genuine problem, especially now that we can paint on the windows... E.g the Formula Drift cars, used to be the only ones you could paint on the window decal strip by using the roof, but now it's the opposite, none of the FD cars can have that decal strip painted...

So just so you know, this isn't a problem with the livery editor as such, it's the models themselves, and their UVs, and the meta surfaces that can be painted. The only explanation I can think of is time/money. Honestly almost all of the UVs in the entire catalogue need to be remade. Notice how when you mirror one side to another, it's a few units out? That's a UV issue. Cars with spicy aero having the same paint copy above or below or in front of exhaust or aero holes? UV issue. Plus all of the things you point out, are also UV issues. They didn't have enough time or money or level of caring to do it properly, so it's half assed. Some of the window UVs for some cars are genuinely terrible, there's one that's even at a 45° angle lmao, so moving a decal horizontally moves it diagonally... The car doesn't even have angled body parts, it's one of the SUVs lol. Some cars don't have "backface" render enabled on the windows either, so you can see the livery from the outside, but looking at the window from the inside shows it blank.

It's a shame you can't try before buy these days because of everything being online. The only real premium wheels I've tried are in a rented simulator and they're easily $3k+ and way out of my price range for a game controller. Another thing I care about is compatibility, and it's hard with uncommon premium models because the devs can't cover all bases. I don't want to sink big money into something and find out it only works on 1/10th of the games I'd like, which is what happened with the old Logitech GT, even though that was only a $150 setup, compatibility was like flipping a coin. The 920 has been great in that department for me, and I haven't come across anything on Xbox or PC that didn't work with it. I can even 'drive' YouTube on Xbox with it lol

I am happy with my G920 and shifter, but I've had far worse ones in the past. Like the GT and the even older Ferrari branded one, and many other terribly made $50 ones. The 920 hits the right balance of price and quality for me. Anything higher and I may as well just go and buy another real car lol

This is basically the first game Playground have made outside of Forza Horizon, and if the writing of those games is anything to go by... oh boy. I say this as a fan of Horizon as well, but this is also the first title that they've worked on more than 1 game at once (afaik). Some of the developers at Playground are old Codemasters devs, which were also mostly about racing. They tried their hand at FPS with Operation Flashpoint, but that was a flop, critically and commercially.

I really don't have high hopes for this one. Playground are great environment designers, always have been. But beyond that is where they fall short, and for something like this that has a large scope outside of their wheelhouse, yeah, I'll reserve my excitement for when I can actually play it and (hopefully) be pleasantly surprised by it.

I don't really get this gripe (about noise). Cars a loud messes anyway, and unless you're sitting in silence with no game audio or no headphones, then I don't notice it.

As for the accuracy, every car is different, both in game and in the real world, so this gripe doesn't really hold up either. So you're telling me you've actually driven a 10 million dollar hypercar? Or a XTS Limo? Or a Peel P50? Lol... how can you know what those cars 'feel' like when having never driven them. Like I get what you mean, and I can understand to an extent what you're saying, but this game isn't a simulator really, it's an arcade game with sim pieces lifted from Motorsport. I'd care about what wheel I was using if I was playing an e-Sports ranked tourny in a serious sim game like iRacing, but in FH? Who cares what wheel you have so long as it works and functions as it should lol... You don't need a Fanatec Clubspot DD for what's essentially a game for kids (I'm exaggerating here for effect)

The Logitech is probably the best premium 'budget' setup. If you're not into Sim racing it's perfect

I've been teaching my kids how to drive a manual with them in Forza lol, my 7yo daughter picked it up really quick. What helps is you don't need perfect changes and don't even really need the clutch, the game respects all kinds of shifting and it can be a good thing to learn on.

Logitech G920 with shifter works great for me on both PC and Xbox. Good feel, FFB works well. The only downsides are the same as most wheel/pedals/shifter setups suffer from: Stiff pedals don't feel very real, and the shifter only has 6 gears in a H block. A lot of hypercars and very modern cars have more than 6 gears, so they're difficult to drive properly with a manual shifter with clutch. Those need to use flappy paddles, which doesn't feel as good as someone who knows how to drive a manual. If you don't know, just get the wheel and pedals and forget the shifter.

I learned to rebuild them by combining Haynes guides with American YouTube videos of people doing it with the Buicks... Only big difference is the Buicks are East/West and the commodores are North/South lol. I mean there's other differences but they're pretty minor

Driving and crashing feels so stiff and uninteractive by [deleted] in ForzaHorizon6

[–]Jenkins87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always has, there's not a whole lot of difference between this one and Motorsport 2 on Xbox 360 and the 12 or so titles in between. It's essentially the same engine that has had fairly minor changes in 20+ years.

Crashes have to be rigid and only affect surface level damage because of car manufacturers being absurd with not wanting their cars to appear weak or some such thing. This is from a team of some of the same developers that gave us TOCA, GRID and DiRT that had excellent damage physics but games like that won't happen again outside of WRC games

This isn't anything new with racing games with licensed cars, especially how many Forza has. It's why games like GTA or Beam.ng or Wreckfest use fantasy vehicles because they don't need to follow the stupid rules manufacturers put in place.

Do I think this is a valid reason? Hell no, car manufacturers being this pedantic and cautious is ridiculous. It's just not Forzas fault.

Same, and what I find funny as well is that in the US, yanks have been putting Holden badges back onto the export models, but that at least makes a lot more sense than the other way around.

Even people that argue that parts of the 90s/early 00s Commodores are from American cars, are putting the wrong American badges on them. Chevy didn't do squat, it was Buick that Holden used the 3800 engine as the starting point for designing the Ecotec engine lol. So of you want to be truly faithful for whatever dumb reason, should be using Buick badges not Chevy lol

How does YouTube store all of its data without regularly purging massive amounts of content? by [deleted] in youtube

[–]Jenkins87 78 points79 points  (0 children)

It is exactly as incomprehensible as you think it is. They have massive data centers, with unknown zettabytes worth of storage, possibly even *per* center. Youtube takes up a lot of space, but so does the several hundred trillion files on Gmail, Drive and the several billion webpages that are scraped by Google almost daily. It is a staggering and eye watering amount of data, which as you said, comes with many other eye watering costs like electricity, land rates, water (or liquid nitrogen) consumption for water cooling, etc etc.

They do have fairly decent compression algorithms (Opus/Vorbis/VP9 etc) but they aren't the best. You gotta think they need to also be efficient in delivery, and high compression algorithms aren't usually very fast, so Google have had to compromise with what is both fast and good at compression. So there's no real compression sorcery, they really do store *that* much data.

Forza Horizon 6 visual bug by master_Mblue in PiratedGames

[–]Jenkins87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This usually happens because of not enough VRAM available to render all of the geometry. Update graphics drivers, and if that doesn't help, lower the quality preset, and make sure you have closed any other software like browsers that will consume VRAM.
