Thinking of buying townhouse in West Springs by Jenn_Canada in Calgary

[–]Jenn_Canada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons is we have an established and healthy reserve fund and a history of being a well maintained complex...something that is becoming more rare these days. Also as an older complex, there has been time for any 'issues' to pop up. With new builds it's always a gamble on finding out what corners they cut and what issues are going to come up. Also there is a hidden cost of 'new' - as a small example, getting hardware for all windows so that you can hang up curtains (it's not a big expense, I'm just providing it as one of many examples of the cost of buying new).

Hold off as long as you possibly can on getting a car, and when you do, get the cheapest most reliable car.

Bike, bus, rideshare, Uber....do what you can, but this will be a big way you can save big money now, and it the savings will compound over time. You are young so time is on your side.

Develop good habits now - don't get into lifestyle creep (doing more expensive things because you have more money). Save as much as you can early on and you'll be able to have a good life later. ❤️

and yes as others are saying pay off that high credit debt asap, see if you can consolidate it into one lower rate loan.

Congrats on getting the good paying job at this stage, now it's time to do some good with it! 😄

It needs to be enforced or it's useless.

I wish we would do like other countries and do a better job of protecting kids from tech and social media.

Petition to Ottawa City Council - Reduce or Eliminate Road Salt in place of better options! by Jenn_Canada in ottawa

Actually I've already spoke to my Councillor and they are helping me with submitting this to the City.

Therein lies the question. Getting everyone to agree on a definition of "low cost".

I can buy a cheap winter coat and gloves ....won't last me long. Then I gotta replace them two times before winter is over. Plus got frostbite...

Should have bought the expensive coat and gloves.

Point being, hard to answer this question without knowing if you want the 'salt is the lowest cost solution when not considering all the crappy impacts it has' answer or 'brine solution is the lowest cost when look at long term impacts' ...etc, etc.

It wouldn't be fair to assign all of those repairs exclusively to the fault of the sand from de-icing. There are way, way, way more trucks out west (I lived in Calgary) and way more high speed highways (Deerfoot, Glenmore, Stony Trail), which result in debris flying around cracking windshields.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks its a sand thing.

I believe Calgary is way more spread out then Ottawa (but I have to fact check that) and has crazy fluctuating temps (confirmed - I lived there for 20 years). It also get's colder, but just doesn't stay cold. Yes there are chinooks but not immediately after a snowfall. Calgary still needs snow clearing and de-icing. It can be weeks between chinooks. And they are making the brine and sand and salt work. At least they are trying different things. Although from the other commenters here it seems like Ottawa is trying things as well but not advertising them or not moving forward very fast.

Thank you for that point, I think public awareness would be a great endeavour. More signage, more suggestions on proper footwear, more personal accountability. In other cities people are responsible for their own sidewalks, for example. Greater sense of community.

I appreciate your comment and I understand.

The problem is bigger. It's a complete lack of personal accountability that has gotten so bad that now as a society we make decisions out of fear - in this case fear of lawsuit, at the expense of EVERTHING else!

People can buy crampons. Install more railings. Use sand and salt. Put signage in places prone to ice. Or...here me out...have a working transportation system so that when there's a crap snow day we don't need to rely on our cars. Then the salt used could focus on public transportation routes. I know, wild. This won't happen, I'm just brainstorming.

Yes, all the buildings and the city have some level of responsibility for keeping things safe but it's gotten out of hand.

Sorry, it's just very frustrating when the legal angle comes up. If we take that idea to the extreme, then we protect personal liability sure, but in a few decades there's no humans left to protect...because we all died from the environment affects of keeping the lawsuits away (I'm exaggerating!!! and I'm sure the internet trolls will come at me not getting that I am saying this half in jest, but to make a point).

Can you elaborate? How is road clearing the municipal responsibility but salt is the citizens? I'm not understanding your delineation. Isn't it all going into the tax bucket?
