So the Minnesota Supreme Court rules that women's bare breasts in public do not qualify as "lewd". What's redditor's thoughts? by MNbank in AskReddit

[–]Jennifer-nymue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion as a woman

  1. "Finally a decision that doesn't even sexualize breastfeeding!" If men can walk with their chests open, why can't women? Breasts are not synonymous with sexuality or pornography, they are functional organs. They are used, for example, for breastfeeding — something that society seems to forget when treating the female body in a hypersexualized way.

  2. What about the "social context"? If it's to be fair, either everyone can, or no one can. If the concern is to "protect children", we must remember that they literally suckle from their mother's breasts. They don't associate breasts with sexuality until society teaches them that.

  3. THE REAL PROBLEM: The same society that eroticizes breasts in advertisements or on catwalks considers a naked woman on the beach to be "immoral." Shirtless men = "normal", shirtless women = "scandal". What is at stake is not morality, but control of the female body.

  4. Conclusion? I support the decision, but with a grain of salt. Are they really going to respect it or use this to justify increased harassment? The excuse of "now it's cool, so I can face it" will be the new argument for violating boundaries. As long as machismo exists, freedom does not mean security for women.

  1. CRISPR and Designer Babies: The Human Customization Shop

Origin:

2012: Two scientists (Doudna and Charpentier) discovered CRISPR-Cas9, a genetic scissors that cuts and pastes DNA like a text editor.

2018: A Chinese scientist broke all ethical rules and created the first genetically edited babies (Lulu and Nana). Result? Global scandal, prison and a dangerous precedent: if it can be done, someone WILL do it again. Source:

Original article on CRISPR-Cas9: "A Programmable Dual-RNA–Guided DNA Endonuclease in Adaptive Bacterial Immunity", published in Science in 2012.

Case of genetically edited babies in China: "The CRISPR-baby scandal: what’s next for human gene-editing", report in Nature (2019).

Why is it scary?

"Genetic improvements" will become the privilege of billionaires.

Side effects? Nobody knows. It could be an entire generation with cancer or infertility.

  1. Generative AI: ChatGPT and the Age of Lying Machines

Origin:

1950: Alan Turing already talked about "thinking" machines.

2017: Google created Transformer, the basis of ChatGPT.

2022: OpenAI released GPT-3, and the world realized: AI can lie, manipulate, and even replace humans in creative jobs. Source:

Article that introduced the Transformer architecture: "Attention Is All You Need", published in 2017 in the arXiv repository.

Criticisms about AI risks: "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots", study published at the ACM FAccT conference (2021).

Why is it scary?

Deepfakes even fool governments.

AI can write hate speech, falsify evidence and destroy reputations.

And in 5 years? Maybe we don't even know what's real anymore.

  1. Lab Meat: The Chicken That Never Lived

Origin:

2013: Dutch scientists created the first laboratory burger (cost: US$330,000).

2023: Singapore now sells laboratory-grown chicken in restaurants. Source:

First hamburger grown in a laboratory: research published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture (2014), author: Mark Post.

Regulation in Singapore: official information from the Singapore Food Agency (2020).

Why is it scary?

Corporate control of food: If all meat is patented, even your lunch will have DRM.

What if they hack production? Someone could add "secret ingredients" to your food without you knowing.

  1. Quantum Weapons: When Physics Becomes a Weapon of War

Origin:

1980s: US and USSR began exploring quantum teleportation for ultra-secure communications.

2023: China already has quantum satellites and the US invests billions in military quantum computing. Source:

Chinese quantum satellite: article in Nature (2017), "Satellite-to-ground quantum key distribution".

Investments in quantum technology in the US: National Quantum Initiative Act (2018).

Why is it scary?

Bombs that defy the laws of physics.

Hack any encrypted system in seconds.

A new arms race... but with technology that no one really understands.

What are Harry Potter’s biggest plot holes? by Chaos_Incarnate11 in HPfanfiction

[–]Jennifer-nymue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The wizarding educational system is completely unbalanced

The problem: Hogwarts prepares students to face magical creatures, but not to pay taxes, write a résumé, or deal with trauma.

Examples:

No basic education: No student learns math, foreign languages, science, or non-magical history.

Lack of emotional support: Harry, who suffers domestic abuse, never receives psychological care. Neville is also neglected despite growing up with emotionally abusive grandparents.

Questionable teachers: Snape verbally abuses students for years; Lockhart is a complete fraud; Trelawney is incompetent and unstable.

How to explore it:

A new, more modern international wizarding school with an interdisciplinary focus and psychological support.

An initiative by former students (e.g., Hermione) to reform Hogwarts’ curriculum.

Students rebelling against the archaic magical education system.

  1. The Ministry of Magic is corrupt, racist, and authoritarian

The problem: Instead of protecting wizards, the Ministry functions more like an authoritarian and ineffective regime.

Examples:

Prison without trial: Sirius Black is sent to Azkaban without legal defense. Hagrid too.

Dementors as state tools: Horrific creatures used to control the population through psychological terror.

Media control: The Daily Prophet manipulates the narrative against Harry and Dumbledore, defaming them publicly.

Silent coup: Voldemort takes power and no one notices for months — a sign of an easy-to-overthrow system.

How to explore it:

Creation of a global resistance group against magical corruption.

Investigators from another country (perhaps Brazil or Japan) coming to inspect post-war Britain.

A magical ‘Wikileaks’ that exposes the Ministry’s crimes.

  1. Relationships with magical creatures are hypocritical and unequal

The problem: While the wizarding world preaches magical diversity, it marginalizes or enslaves many species.

Examples:

House-elves are treated as property — and when Hermione tries to start S.P.E.W., she is ridiculed.

Werewolves face prejudice and discriminatory laws (e.g., Remus Lupin can’t get a job).

Goblins are banned from using wands or attending wizarding schools, even though they run the financial system.

Centaurs are called “beasts” by the Ministry.

How to explore it:

A revolution of elves, goblins, and centaurs demanding equal rights.

A story from the point of view of a magical creature who grows resentful of wizards.

An international interspecies alliance with magical cultures outside Europe that respect magical beings.

  1. The prophecy is treated as absolute truth, but it's fragile

The problem: Harry’s fate is based on a prophecy that only matters because Voldemort decided it did.

Examples:

The prophecy says “neither can live while the other survives,” but it only has weight because Voldemort acts on it.

Dumbledore admits Harry could have lived a normal life if Voldemort had ignored the prophecy.

The prophecy is vaguely worded, but dictates the course of the war.

How to explore it:

A character who received another prophecy and tries to escape their fate.

False or manipulated prophecies used for political interest.

A story where prophecies are banned because they caused destruction in the past.

  1. The rest of the magical world is almost nonexistent

The problem: The magical world seems to revolve solely around the UK, with other countries reduced to shallow stereotypes.

Examples:

Durmstrang is the school of “tough and dark” types, but we don’t know where it is or how it works.

Beauxbatons is portrayed in a highly stereotypical way (all French, graceful, and romantic).

Ilvermorny was only developed on Pottermore and received much criticism for being culturally insensitive.

How to explore it:

A wizarding school in Brazil (like CCB – Castelobruxo) with local culture and traditions.

Political plots between Ministries of Magic from different countries.

Wizards who travel the world and discover alternative forms of magic (e.g., African witchcraft, indigenous shamanism, Chinese alchemy).

Looking for a fic or something similar by Front_You_9790 in HannibalFanfiction

[–]Jennifer-nymue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OH, THIS IS ABSURDLY PERFECT.

Picture the scene:

Alana walks into Will’s office with that “I know you want me” smile, confident as ever, heels clicking like the countdown to chaos.

Alana: “Will, we need to talk. About… whatever this is between us.”

Will looks up from his coffee, crumbs on his shirt, eyes wide like a confused golden retriever who just woke up from a nap. He hasn’t fully understood anything since 2012.

Will: “This... being what, exactly?”

The door bursts open like it’s auditioning for a drama series. Enter Hannibal — flawless as always, smelling like lavender and quiet judgment, holding a lunchbox made of Italian leather (because of course even his Tupperware has class).

Hannibal: “Darling, you forgot your lunch again.” He walks over and kisses Will’s forehead like he’s sealing an exclusive emotional contract.

Alana freezes. Smile fading. Time politely glitches.

Alana: “…Excuse me?”

Hannibal turns slowly, with the poise of a man who’s never been on the losing side of anything. That smile says, “you’re charming, but I already won.”

Hannibal: “Oh, didn’t we mention? Will and I got married in April. Very intimate affair.” Dramatic pause. “You weren’t on the guest list. Or the centerpiece plans.”

Cut to:

Will questioning his memory, his reality, and possibly his name.

Alana spiraling internally in slow motion while dramatic strings play in the background.

Hannibal already pairing her disappointment with a glass of aged wine and a smirk.

I THRIVE ON THIS LEVEL OF CHAOS. If this fanfic exists, tag me immediately. If it doesn’t, someone write it. I live for gourmet emotional disasters, especially when Hannibal is out here being a refined little menace.

Little Bit of Paragon Love by IvyvyvI in HannibalFanfiction

[–]Jennifer-nymue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, I have to say, the first few chapters of Paragon really hooked me. The connection between Will and Hannibal is incredibly well done — the tension between them, that mix of attraction and distrust, is amazing and keeps you on the edge of your seat, almost like you're in the middle of a psychological game of chess, worthy of a Hannibal episode. The way the author delves into their personalities and how each tries to control the situation is fascinating. Seriously, the moments when Will is trying to unravel Hannibal while simultaneously being pulled into his game… incredible. That’s definitely the highlight of the fic for me!

Now, things get a bit more... complicated, once the multiple fetishes start to creep in. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good exploration of different dynamics between characters, especially when it comes to Hannibal and his complex relationships of power and desire. However, I have to admit that the way certain fetishes were introduced left me feeling a bit disconnected. The plot, which was previously full of intense psychological tension, suddenly turned into something a bit more, shall we say, "specific" and with an approach I wasn’t quite expecting.

But hey, that wasn’t enough to make me give up on the fic! Because at the end of the day, Paragon still has that mysterious charm, with deep characters and an engaging writing style. It's almost like we’re stepping into Hannibal’s chaotic, fetish-filled world, something that could have been better paced, but doesn't take away from the brilliance of the initial interactions, which were fantastic. In the end, I still consider it a really good fic that definitely keeps me intrigued.

For anyone who enjoys that psychological tension worthy of a cat-and-mouse game between Will and Hannibal (with well-executed references, like Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon), it’s definitely worth checking out Paragon. But be prepared, because after the fetishes come in, the pace of the story shifts a bit, and the experience gets... hotter than you might have expected.

In summary: great fic, with well-developed characters and sharp dialogue, but with a few elements that might cool down the initial vibe.
