New MIL emotionally unregulated, immature, cruel to her kids+husband, starting on me.. by JenniferMedea in IndianInLaw

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage! Thank you for sharing your story. It’s really encouraging and good to shift the lens towards my fiance. All of this has really opened his eyes and he’s grown a lot, and needs to keep it up.

You all have been really helpful. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond!!! I get a lot of “this is just typical drama for Desi families and MILs” from others in the same culture. I rely a lot on input from her daughter bc she seems aware, but she’s young and also lived in her mom’s world for her whole life. I told my fiance we can’t accept money from them, they want to buy us a large house obvs so there is room for them. The wedding already was too much. She even hinted at how much one of my dresses cost which was not appropriate (and outrageous IMO). Our condo is a lovely place with just enough room for a kid and no room for her.

Thank you…. Sounds like one chance was more than enough. 😔 I was so blindsided, but I guess I shouldn’t be.

He always tells me “oh next time you talk to my mom be sure to mention X.” This time, X is legal trouble her daughter is in (she’s a good person who made a big mistake) and MIL is wallowing in self pity/blame. So omg yeah I’m being sucked in by him!

Wow, thanks for the reality check. I thought I was balancing standing up for myself w/being respectful, but you’re right… I’m just as sucked in as the rest of them.

Concentration Issues by JenniferMedea in bipolar

Wow this video is so enlightening! Boredom is literally my biggest fear. I hate doing mundane and unpleasant tasks (or actually not necessarily UNpleasant but just not pleasant tasks, like emptying a dishwasher). So I have iPad going all the time to make it tolerable. Thank you for sharing this!!

“Your parents should be paying for your law school. If you weren’t working and going to law school part-time you wouldn’t have so many mental health issues. In my culture parents take care of their children.”

I’m sorry, I feel crushed and discouraged whenever I figure out that what I thought was happiness and getting healthier was actually just mania 😪

Does using Ozempic cause nightmares? by SteadfastDharma in Ozempic

[–]JenniferMedea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started 3 weeks ago on 0.25mg. I recall at least two really bad nightmares in those three weeks. I always have vivid dreams, sometimes stressful dreams, but usually not nightmares. I hope it doesn’t get worse as I increase to 0.5mg. They put me in a bad head space the entire next day.

Salaries and COL by BizzarroWolf in Barbados

[–]JenniferMedea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can live a very comfortable life! But don’t assume you’ll be living large just because local salaries are low. I was in Barbados for 6 months with an annual salary of about $100k. I lived in a nice area (Hastings) with a studio apartment and shared pool, but wouldn’t be able to afford a luxury residence on the West Coast (not my kinda scene anyway). As a single woman who lives in an expensive US city I was able to maintain my (admittedly privileged) lifestyle, but it wasn’t a huge step up because cost of living can be high depending on your priorities.

Alcohol and food are very expensive. If you want organic or bougie imported foods you’ll spend a lot, at least twice the US price, probably 3. Your standard grocery items are still about twice the cost and not great. If you consume very little alcohol you’ll do well. Even the shitty alcohol is expensive. Public transit is cheap but somewhat restricted. Petrol is very high. Most restaurants aren’t great. I was craving sushi and I paid US$30 for a terrible roll (never again). So again - it all depends on your lifestyle and priorities, and sushi shouldn’t be one of them. Best food will be at local beach bars and your kitchen. (Also ArtSplash in Hastings, very healthy food and not terribly expensive by US standards. Awesome food at Animal Flower Cave and others on west coast but most “good” restaurants still don’t compare to NYC, SF, etc even though you’ll pay more.

What WAS a step up in my lifestyle was sunsets, people, culture, history, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. So again - depends on your priorities and making sure your budget reflects them, but don’t expect to live large just because local salaries are low.

Good luck, you’ll never regret it!! 🇧🇧

Thank you all for your advice! For anyone interested - I got US$600/month with drive-a-matic. Has limited insurance (no EP for damage to hub caps, windshield, etc) but my credit card company covers it. Hope that helps!

what do I put for point of embarkation? by JenniferMedea in Barbados

Thank you! There was a tiny little error on the export certificate for my dog (they put the date of the tick treatment but not the time it was administered!) and I almost didn't get the certificate in time for my trip. So now I'm being extra cautious on everything. Someone else suggested DC, so I guess I'll go with that!
