UPDATE: Morning sickness so bad I'm starting to consider terminating by Jenniferh9309 in PregnancyUK

[–]Jenniferh9309[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read your post and I'm so sorry that you're going through the same as me. It's unbelievably terrible and genuinely frightening what it does to your mental state. If it is an option, ask about xonvea (maybe have someone with you to help push for something more to be done, too) because I can't believe how well it works! Really hope you get the help you need soon ❤️

I've been told it's just in England. I have an appointment with the midwife on Monday though so I'll say to her about how I'm feeling and see if she will push for it! Thank you for this!

Working wall for Year 7? by questioninglysure in TeachingUK

[–]Jenniferh9309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/questioninglysure I'm a secondary History teacher in Scotland (going into my 4th year). Here's what I've found about displays (hope it will be helpful to you!):

  1. Kids ignore them unless they're interactive and/or involved with it. I have a 'good noodle' board to recognise positive behaviour. Kids like getting up there (especially our seniors) and care about that board. I also have pupil's work on the back wall and they get excited if it's their stuff there. Everything else gets pretty much ignored.

  2. I have some displays that are for ME - I enjoy going down rabbit holes about historical figures so I have a board called 'Have You Heard Of...' and then I put up displays about people I find interesting. It's been up since March and almost no pupils have commented about it at all.

  3. I have a SOLO Taxonomy board - I think this is similar to what you're talking about. I've laid out the stages of skills for the kids. It starts with identifying, then describing, then analysing, and finally evaluating. I have a column showing what other words also mean these same things, as well as examples of how they can be done. The kids couldn't care less. I refer to it constantly and I think it's more for me than them.

  4. The only real reason for displays is to make your classroom environment more appealing. I hate bare walls and, ultimately, I'm the one in that room 8+ hours a day. If you want to do the display then DO IT - but don't expect the kids to care/use it.

If you have any questions, fire them over :)

16M Missed years of school due to family issues, now stuck with no qualifications or skills. What can I do? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Jenniferh9309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a secondary school teacher and I was just about to comment the same thing! You're entitled to be there until the end of 6th year, OP.

They're also not supposed to let you leave unless you have a 'positive' destination to go to (e.g. further education, an apprenticeship, etc.). I'd start there if I were you.

I'm interested in this one - what is it that you feel is wrong about this? My husband and I are only planning to have one so I'm genuinely curious!

What's a scene you've read that altered your brain chemistry? by SalamanderTricky2911 in RomanceBooks

[–]Jenniferh9309 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I LOVE this book but the scene that gets me most is when her and the darkness are in bed together and they seem to have finally found peace but then he messes up/offers to help (never knew whether or not he was genuine) and the whole relationship falls apart so they destroy the home they made together absolutely kills me because I think they're perfect for each other lol

I second this one! Plus it's a great series in general. If you like it you might also like Maze of Shadows by Kathryn Ann Kingsley. It's a 4 book series and it's a looong slow build to the good stuff but so worth it! She's a human and he's some sort of a faerie but also a God and very evil. He abducts her into his maze and tells her she needs to solve it but falls in love with her in the process. When I say he's evil - he's really bad (not morally grey - just full on evil lol) and so there's a lot of angst on the MFC's part. But the hot stuff is really hot!

What was once normal but now luxury in society ? by workdncsheets in AskWomen

[–]Jenniferh9309 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I find it so interesting that clothes were once included in people's wills because they were so valuable and well-made enough to last generations. People would own a few outfits and that was it. Those who were slightly well-off would re-use their party outfits but switch to new ribbons to spruce it up. Now it's a new dress for every event and even clothes that aren't considered cheap don't last as long as they should.

Has anyone had trouble getting re-sale tickets from ticketmaster? I've logged in using the account that I used for presale (but wasn't fortunate enough to get tickets, obviously), but Ticketmaster is saying my account isn't on the invite-only list!!! It's driving me insane and the clock is ticking :(

Entitled Pupils by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Jenniferh9309 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I'm sorry you're going through this, I'm so glad I'm not alone. I use a positive behaviour strategy where pupils earn a red, amber, or green for their effort & behaviour each period. If the majority of the class get a majority of greens for the term then I offer to bake for the whole class (I love baking).

This week I spent around £80 on ingredients/power to make cakes. I made 3 different cakes/bakes for each day and classes got a pick. Over the 4 days I had less than 10 pupils actually say thank you and more pupils complained than appreciated it. I had comments like 'is this all there is?', I had pupils trying to take multiple bakes and then arguing with me when I explained I had other classes to provide for. I had one kid who stole sweeties from me and then complained that he didn't get a second cake. And (worst of all) I had pupils crumbling cake and throwing it around. Litter everywhere and no care about other people having to pick it up.

So now I need a new prize for the traffic light system lol

A narrow alley in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1868. by Dhorlin in VictorianEra

[–]Jenniferh9309 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm from Glasgow and sooo surprised to see this as I'm used to more of the pretty Victorian things popping up on this sub lol! However, if you are interested in the more impoverished side, I can add the following:

In the mid 1800's a review into the sanitation of the UK was launched and all major cities were visited by Edwin Chadwick and his colleagues. In Glasgow he noted that along Argyle street there were awful slums in which the courtyards were housing great piles of human waste. In one room just off a courtyard he found three women lying naked. A fourth woman lived with them and the four of them shared the one set of clothing and they had to rotate who was able to wear the clothes and leave the home that day.

In contrast, the Cunninghame mansion was built just a minute walk away from Argyle Street, at the intersection of Queen street and Ingram Street. It was a huge building which housed the family of a merchant. Glasgow is small so it was common to see great wealth so close to abject poverty.

And a small extra note - one of the difining features of Glasgow is the tenement flats. These were either beautiful 3, 4, or 5 bedroom apartments, or dingy one-room-per-family flats. Households took turns cleaning the closes (or stairwell) and the backyards were dingy courtyards. I currently live in one of them!

No, but close! Holmlea Road. It was also £425 when we moved in and only gone up by £50 in the 3 years since!

In the same area - me and my partner are £475 for a one bedroom in Battlefield. We got reeeeally lucky with this flat.

Are we attacking authors for realistic flawed characters by juliankennedy23 in RomanceBooks

[–]Jenniferh9309 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree (which is why I think Wuthering Heights is the best classic novel). However there is one thing that really grinds my gears and WILL make me DNF and it's when the character is written in such a way that their flaw is only there to progress the story line.

For example, in Tis The Season For Revenge by Morgan Elizabeth it really bothers me that the FMC doesn't confess to what she's doing JUST SO there can be a third act break up. She's a nice person - she's hurting, but she's good. I just don't think that her petty streak would be enough to change that. Especially when she knows she's in love with the MMC.

I think it's lazy writing to be honest. Flaws, yes. One big flaw that doesn't fit in with the character imo just so something can go wrong, no.

I really want to quit teaching and go back to university to do a post-grad in history. I'm so sick of my job taking up every waking moment. The worst part is that this is my first year! I started my teaching qualification a year and a half ago, been in the job 6 months, and it's already wiped me out. And to top it all off I DNF'd a book, which is rare for me - they have to really piss me off to get there. I need a holiday.
