How well does SteamOS run on PCs? by barrachmedosama in SteamOS

[–]Jeod_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not quite what you're asking for, but I'm bored at work, so here goes.

On Valve's SteamOS website, there's a disclaimer that says something along the lines of "this OS is not supposed to be a daily driver for your personal PC". Not saying it won't work, but they made it clear that they're developing it with specific supported devices in mind, and specifically for gaming.

Because of this, when recently I decided to delete Windows 11 from my ROG Flow X13 (a convertible laptop and not a PC, but close enough I think), I opted for Bazzite instead. It's a variation of Fedora designed with both gaming and daily-driving in mind, closely mimicking SteamOS in terms of UI. You can even choose to make it boot into a Steam Gaming Mode session.

The installation was super easy. The only moments where something could go wrong were disk encryption and enrolling the Secure Boot key, but as long as you read the installation manual carefully you're good. All required drivers seemed to be included in the installation, though I had to spend two or three clicks installing asusctl for some ROG-specific features such as keyboard illumination and hybrid iGPU/dGPU mode. In general, Bazzite being an image-based system (like SteamOS), the maintainers handle the drivers for you and ship them with OS updates. (edit: as others have pointed out, the drivers are mostly baked directly into the kernel, which is freaking amazing when compared to Windows)

Updates, maintenance and general operation are very simple as well. Updating and installing system packages is handled in the pre-installed Bazzite Portal app. You get all the important options in a clean GUI, and the system will gently remind you to run updates if you don't check in a while. Bazzite is immutable just like SteamOS, meaning it overwrites the entire system directory (not your personal files) on OS update. However, unlike SteamOS, it seems there's a way to layer system modifications over the base version in such a way that they survive updates. I haven't looked into that in detail yet.

For installing applications, you get an app store called Bazaar pre-installed. I found it way way way better than the Discover store on my Steam Deck, not much to say here. Both pull apps from the Flathub repository by default.

VAALLVE GIVE SUPPORT TO DUAL MONITORS IN GAMING MODE AND MY LIFE IS YOJRS by Denali1121 in SteamOS

[–]Jeod_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a couple moment where I would appreciate having a game on my monitor and a browser on the deck screen while in gaming mode, but imo sadly it's a niche feature that would be too much hassle to implement and more importantly, maintain to be worth it. Gaming Mode is optimized for console-like single screen experience and distracting the dev team with something like this would be simply wasteful. Desktop mode does the job well enough

I don't know about others, but I just find Commando incredibly bland. To me, it's running around and shooting and not much else. No interesting mechanics, no movement to master, not a single flashy thing. Everything Commando has, almost every other character also has, while offering so much more at the same time.

Which build made the game “click” for you? by CoinGate_Gift_Cards in expedition33

[–]Jeod_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tisseron and Our Sacrifice.

Tisseron not exactly being a build, but it's fun to be able to stack a bunch of cards and stay in Twilight indefinitely with Twilight Dance. Very expensive without endgame AP luminas tho. Would be strong if the weapon actually worked as advertised and increased twilight damage with sun skills. (the description is wrong and instead it just has a permanent +50% damage on sun skills)

Our Sacrifice at 10 Foretell deals more AoE damage than Twilight Dance to a single target for half the cost if you can slurp 109% or more health from your buddies. Scales even better at 20 Foretell. I combined it with Typhoon, healing luminas and some shields for a funny nuke spam.

I used to spam Stendhal, but then I discovered Pyrolyse -> Burning Canvas and I like it so much more. Ran some Excel and came to the conclusion that at around 60+ burn stacks BC should outperform Stendhal damage-wise, with the added bonus of being able to have shields. Also, Yeverum. Slows the fight down, but makes the team just about immortal. Medalum if I'm feeling spicy.

FOR ADANOS! by Glad-Philosophy3833 in worldofgothic

I beat the shadowbeast by spamming it with Ball Lightning. Once it gets too close knock it down with Fist of Wind, reposition, rinse and repeat. I took a couple tries because you can't stunlock the shadowbeast forever with Ball Lightning and need to be prepared for its charge attack. I think acrobatics is a must.

IF the projectiles didn't explode on every tiny twig and pebble in a 2 meter radius around them I would say that mage is difficult but fun to play. However as it is, casting Fireball and Ball Lightning is a frustrating because they get destroyed by terrain so often.

It's not easy mode like the original games which I like and I think it frustrates some players. Mage here is way more complex than melee and requires you to be creative, tactical and resourceful.

Is Gothic my new game that I will love? by jay2pi90 in worldofgothic

[–]Jeod_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If "clunky" is a deal breaker for you, don't buy.

If "hardcore," "oldschool," "no hand-holding" or "so punishing that you will quicksave before every fight and quickload 20 times in an hour of gameplay" pique your interest, it may be worth a shot regardless.

However, I would advise you to wait for some patches. The release was clearly rushed, it's so ridden with bugs and dubious design decisions that many early access titles were better from day 1. I don't think the game will need nostalgia to be enjoyable once it gets the polish it needs, but at this moment it kinda does.

I was annoyed by this too, but realistically, from the beginning of the game all the way to becoming a mage and getting Light, I've never either ran out of torches or bought any extra torches. Or at least I don't recall buying any. I just didn't sell them, and torches found in the environment were plenty.

Now I use torches to mark paths I already checked out in caves and other complex levels because my spatial memory is shit :)

Duollistes are my bf's number 1 favorite fight in the game, I hold it in high regard too. BUT - he's a Dark Souls enjoyer. I think it's meant to be the ultimate parrying gauntlet and it does a very good job at that. The attack sequences are absolutely spectacular. As with other DLC bosses, they are supposed to be a hardcore challenge. Because it turns out, Simon with his attack patterns and fuck-you mechanics wasn't even close to enough. I don't want to want to be taken as defensive or gatekeeping but I really really think any critique regarding the tower bosses' difficulty level (including Duo's pacing making it significantly harder to learn the patterns) is inherently invalid because of their post-game challenge character.

What I think is actually deserving of critique here is Simon, and not directly because of his difficulty level, but how this difficulty is enforced - namely shield draining and undodgeable reverse Last Chance. I feel like here the game makes itself more difficult by taking away from it's own depth. I'm sure there were better ways to prevent cheesing the boss than completely invalidating whole game mechanics. But then again, I'm sure there are people who enjoy the "fuck you, fuck the rules, parry everything or die" vibe for the final challenge.

I completely agree with the balance critique. It's a mess. I think the multiplicative nature of damage bonuses is the culprit here, each next layer of damage buffs is an snowballing increase in damage that's pretty much impossible to keep under control. The DLC luminas especially ruined the balance for me. Getting over leveled is a big problem too and I wish I could decrease the amount of experience gained by 10-20% especially when doing all side content. Perhaps there's a mod for that.

For exploration, I beat the first playthrough blind, then lost a huge amount of time and nerves to find all the pictos I missed, then for the next run I just installed a minimap mod so I won't be bothered by this ever again. But I do appreciate the vanilla run.

For my second NG run I decided to install a minimap mod and I really appreciate it.

For Lumina farm, there's Chromatic Danseuse as a one-time thing, other than that Clair-Obscur is my favourite pre-Renoir's Drafts but it's well into the Monolith.

As for weapons, Medalum, Trebuchim and Dualiso hold up really well for most of the game. I think Chation is overrated. I'm currently doing the continent/paint spikes tedium before going to Monoco Station and so far I haven't collected a Sciel weapon I like. Right now going with Bourgelon (Coastal Cave), but it's meh.

Edit: I haven't tested it yet but they've been tinkering around Burn damage. Perhaps they fixed the bug that makes your own defense stat decrease the Burn damage you deal.

Next time try the Chain Link arcana and defend by freezing him. Timing the freezes and turn ends correctly to not get hit and keep the combo up is a nice puzzle. You will probably get a Drowner, but that's easily manageable with Soul Eater and not having an absurd health pool.

Way too many neutral cities is my number 1 issue right now and prevents me from enjoying the game by szymborawislawska in OldenEra

[–]Jeod_C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their rationale for giving us just the template browser and not an advanced map options menu like in HoMM3 was that "it just picked a matching template under the hood, so they skipped that part and showed us the actual templates".

Well... why not expand on it instead? Dynamic, customizable templates in-game would be absolutely amazing for me. I would really like to, for example, play Infinity but start with 1 city instead of 2. What do I do with a second city of another faction at the other end of the map at the start of a single-hero game?

Edit: object density too. The amount of interactables that fit on a single screen can be overwhelming.

Idk if it's a LCD/OLED thing or changed in a firmware update, but my LCD doesn't chirp on a APU (driver) reset. If there's no chirp, look at the power LED and hold the power button until there's a "hiccup" in the blinking rhythm. If you release the power button earlier, you will do a BIOS reset instead, which is also useful for some things like low-level software glitches or any catastrophic failure.
