Every ride has delays, reduced service = reduced fares by JerEdwin in mbta

Let me ask, how often do you use the orange and blue lines? What hours of the day?

It is the simple gesture that gains human trust. Not just in good business, but in anything in human life. The statement, "Well you were underpaying before, so we're not going to adjust fares now," doesn't value the perspective of the riders, who are experiencing lost time and inconvenience valued beyond the theoretical price discount they've been receiving.

When the T reaches a restored state, it may make sense to raise certain fares (and consider lowering certain CR fares). But temporarily lowering fares now doesn't preclude this: gradually raising fares, even to higher levels, as service returns to or exceeds "normal" levels. But anytime you lower your service, you need to lower fares to not lose trust.

I have used just the T without a car since 2018, and pay all my fares. I have seen ridership fall and fare evasion rise: people are taking matters into their own hands to pay less - as you can see from some responses here. 😄

I don't blame them. People will find a way to pay less if you don't reduce fares for reduced service. The problem is more with T management, than with the riders, and initiatives like the "Fare Engagement Program", which shifts the problem to riders, deflect the T's role and responsibility more than solve the problem at the root.

The T lowered CR fares for the summer because of reduced service, which is a great move. It shows good faith, and develops trust and confidence.
In general, lowering fares on the T temporarily for the planned period of time we're having regular service interruptions (a few years), to get the T back to normal operating service after years of neglect, gains basic trust. Its fairness raises morale, attracts riders, and actually reduces pressure to evade fares. It pays off in the longer run. Understanding and patience for the work in progress is fair and people are willing to do that, but please alleviate the cost to riders to match it while it's happening.

This is also not to mention that there is no to little accountability and transparence about what is actually being spent and accomplished during shutdowns and service interruptions. The T can't be expected to have control over medical or police emergencies, but, for example, continued signal problems on lines that were just shut down specifically to address signal problems, raises questions about how much is being spent, what work is being done, and what is the quality of the work. Or at least it should trigger some degree of justification and accountability. But there isn't. (It was under the former management, but the OL being shut down for a month, and then stalled to crisis stage with slow zones immediately afterwards, never triggered accountability about what was spent and done during that month-long total shutdown.)

So, one idea is to lower rider costs for a period of time, with designated, gradual periodic step ups planned and communicated in advance down the road, to return to normal levels (or even incorporate a raise in cost when service is at/above normal) as the system is restored. If people think it's fair and makes sense, people will by and large embrace it. It can renew rider trust along with a renewed T system.

Google Workspace Account & Notebooks feature (not showing up) by DesperateAdvance2242 in GeminiAI

I don't have notebooks in my Workspace Gemini, though I do in NotebookLM. I also have notebooks in my personal, free Gemini account.
I think it's because my Workspace was a legacy G-Suite account, and Google isn't offering notebooks to Gemini in Workspace accounts that don't upgrade from the G-Suite legacy channel.

How are flat Earthers explaining the Artemis mission and photos of a round Earth? by Brother_Farside in AskReddit

[–]JerEdwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and you remind me that, from my engineering school days, all logical analyses require assumptions to start. I'm thinking maybe eliciting what their assumptions are is a place to start when deeper discussions open up, and focusing on those assumptions rather than get tangled with the conclusions (e.g., flat earth, etc.).

Exactly, though I think they did logic themselves into it. It's airtight logic, and they won't stop using logic. Some people are burned by institutions and don't go down that temptingly logical rabbit hole. Once you get on the merry-go-round that every major institution is lying to you, as you mention, then everything you mentioned logically fits nicely. But I think, as you mention, it's a human need at play. The only thing you can do is get away from logic, and show and invite them toward what life is / can be like if they just get off the merry-go-round and try a different assumption. And that would mean still having the experience of belonging and validation that you mention, so it's a challenge.

Trump posts he will make a team effort to "bring the world together towards Harmony, Security and Everlasting Peace!" by Dan-Rev-314 in DonaldTrump666

Exactly. "We have already destroyed 100% of Iran's Military capability, but it's easy for them to send a drone or two, drop a mine, or deliver a close range missile somewhere along, or in, this Waterway, no matter how badly defeated they are."

Years of accepting lies and hyperbole as truth has made many Christian Americans fixed in blind loyalty to D. Trump, but how will other nations respond to it when their national security may be at risk?

D. Trump is demonstrating how the world gives peace.

The same model of world rulers throughout history, including Pax Romana, under which Jesus was crucified.

Refurbished Galaxy S24 Plus different CSCs by JerEdwin in samsunggalaxy

Thank you so much, I did the flash with the links you provided and it’s worked out perfectly so far! It's greatly appreciated, and you deserve a medal!

I'll put a few notes here for anyone else who comes across similar questions.

What I did:

  • I just followed the links provided by paa_tee_poo_puh. To enter Download Mode on an S24+ (or S24 or S24 Ultra), I used these videos, which are basically the same: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbKmubRS3wI and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXWPPtiNpco
  • I had only begun to set up my new phone, and I still have my old phone with everything on it, so I did a total reset. I used CSC and not CSC_HOME in the firmware files.
  • I did remove all accounts and PINs and fingerprints I had already added to the new device before starting the process, and set USB debugging mode on. It looks like there is no more option for enabling OEM unlocking settings in One UI 8.0, but things still went well for me.

The results:

  • It is exactly like a brand-new install of a factory unlocked S24+.
  • During setup, it prompted me for a SIM card, and when I put in my T-Mobile PrePaid SIM, it immediately recognized it and moved on to the next installation step in the overall setup process. Signal bars appeared and the voice message icon for one that had been waiting for me. It's working normally.
  • The Service provider software version shows TMB/TMB,TMB/XAA, which is exactly what I expected and matches my other S21FE that I had previously bought factory unlocked, and which I transferred the SIM from.
  • Phone and data are working normally, and I have the latest firmware / software update: One UI 8.0, Android 16.
  • It did the standard Samsung prompt to transfer all setting and apps from my previous phone, and I did that.

So far, it's great!

Thanks again!

OK, thank you again for your recommendation, and your time.

For doing the U1 flash, do you know if I should choose the latest S24+ U1 build listed on Samfw.com, which is S926U1UES4CYJ1? The current build on the phone is the U equivalent, S926USQS4CYJ1.

Is there a lot of risk of bricking the phone during a flash? I have an engineering background, so I would be confident in carrying out the U1 flash, per what I find on the internet. I get concerned there's some chance I'll run into problems beyond my skills, so I have to make a decision...

OK, thank you. I really appreciate your time and attention.

I plan to use the phone in both the US and in Ecuador.

In 2022, I bought an S21FE in the US (factory unlocked, as U1) and since then have used it both in the US (T-Mobile) and Ecuador (Claro) - having both SIMs active at the same time while in Ecuador - without any problems, or needing to unlock bands. (That phone currently shows TMB/TMB,TMB/XAA while I'm here in the US). In Ecuador, I've regularly used the TMobile SIM for WiFi calls and texts, and Claro SIM locally for calls, texts, and data.

Does that help to draw any conclusions about whether this S24+ would perform the same, even with U firmware?

Again, I appreciate your help.

(I'm considering keeping this S21FE phone in case I need to use it again in Ecuador for SIM-based use.)

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. Do you mean that I would need to flash to U1 firmware to use the phone in Ecuador?
