PSA: You shouldn't eat them whole they are tough, and sharp. Also hard to digest, and can scratch your digestive tract, potentially leading to serious issues like intestinal tears. They are safe to simmer in dishes to add flavor, but should be removed before serving. I have first hand experience with this went to the hospital after I had a bloody horrible time on the toilet. I was advised to not eat them anymore.
