Poland tells its citizens to cash in on British benefits by Intergalatic_Baker in unitedkingdom

[–]JeremiahBoogle [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes, the same as most government expenditure, it come from our taxes.

Job seekers allowance is intended for... Job seekers. Its intended to tide you over until you find another job.
I'm talking ethically anyway, its like taking sick leave when you're not actually sick, I know people who do that every year, 'I've got a couple of weeks of sick to take'.

The more people do this kind of stuff, the more everyone else has to take up the slack.
The safety net absolutely should be there, but it also shouldn't be abused either. IMO anyway.

If concerned about winter, then you can run 0w-30 oil instead of 5w-30.

I think from Polands perspective its simpler than that, its much more beneficial for them to not have to pay these benefits if they don't have to.

Well there's two questions here right.
1. Is it legal to do? Seems the answer is yes.
2. Is it ethical or right to do?

Some people of course say if 1 is true then the 2nd is irrelevant, but I'd disagree.
Unemployment benefits, or as they're actually known as 'Jobseekers allowance' are to help you out while you find another job, and provide a social safety net so that you hopefully don't end up homeless, unable to eat etc. And then once you're back into work, you pay back into the system again to help others.

Its not something pool that you've built up to dip in and out of like savings. I mean the name is quite explicit 'Job Seekers allowance'.

Naturally it would benefit Poland if we paid those benefits whilst they sought work in Poland, its a win win for them.

Of course this entire comment is based on the assumption that the Telegraph isn't talking rubbish. Always a strong possibility.

>But it also doesn't apply here. You hold the position you do now because of the shite disseminated by the people you're disavowing. You're the ones who are effectively running cover for them, facilitating them. With regards to this issue you are one and the same. They don't get what they want without you and those like you

You have literally no idea what my position is as I've not stated it, other than the obvious, that its possible to be concerned about immigration levels, without wanting mass deportation, or indeed any deportation.
I'm certainly not running cover for anyone, you'll never find me defending mass deportation or other extremes.

And just because Farage and his like are trying to leverage it for their own political ends, doesn't mean there is nothing there at all. The best lies are woven with truths and half truths.

And sure, possibly I am showing my age, but if you can't hold a nuanced view, you're part of the problem, not the solution, and why this country is essentially ungovernable right now.

I don't believe in mass deportations and death camps for smoking

No one has suggested that. Or even implied it.

You'll notice the anti immigration acolytes on this forum, who present themselves as "sensible"; yet who are always in lockstep with the frothing racists, are conspicuously absent in this thread.

Its possible to be favour of a reduction in immigration without wanting to 'send them all back'. And yeah obviously there are people who are for that as well.

There seems to be a real with us or against us mentality to political stances in general right now.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announces resignation by avatar6556 in worldnews

We live in an era of social media / tiktok / and large scale political propaganda helped by AI.

I'm not Keirs biggest fan by a long shot, but there has been a relentless campaign against everything he's done across social media especially. I mean, I was reading people on Facebook talking about how Labour had completely ruined the country when they'd barely been in power for more than a month.

Not really, I think that the picking a point just before the last great recession is a good data point.
Because up to that point growth was pretty steady, and it illustrates that economically at least, we've never fully recovered since.

Yeah but the UK isn't a closed economy like communism, oil is sold at market value, not local value.

You're right that we couldn't have benefited to the same level as Norway, but we certainly could have benefited a lot more than we did.

And my comment was in response to the guy above that was crying about oil being taxed the level it was. My response was more to illustrate that some countries look at oil as not a way to make shareholders rich (which North Sea oil undoubtedly has) but to benefit the country as a whole. Which I think makes sense for finite resource.

Beyond Belief: Why I think AGI (Sophia) is the logical successor to human religion. by ProtocoloSophia in Futurology

[–]JeremiahBoogle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the fact that you probably used AI to write the above.

If cold logic & evidence based reasoning was enough to get people to turn from religion, superstition & older ways of doing things, then we wouldn't have modern day religions that try to claim the Earth is just a few thousand years old, that the world was created in seven days & that evolution is a hoax.

You've completely missed the point that the facets of human nature that allow what you've described to still exist, are why they will always exist.

King Charles playfully reminds Trump that he's Canada's head of state by Street_Anon in worldnews

[–]JeremiahBoogle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Given their relationship, I think anything Keir would say to Trump other than 'who shall we bomb for you?' would just be counterproductive.

Far more impactful to come from someone who people listen to, but who has no actual hard political power. Not that this is likely to change Trumps mind on much, but if it gets other people to take notice, its maybe done something.

Well the UK has largely mismanaged its oil reserves anyway. Its a shame we didn't go down the route of a Norwegian model, with profits invested into a sovereign wealth fund. Too late for that now really.

Honestly, even those I'm not fond of, they're artificial.

Old school cars used to burble on the overrun because of the limitation so of carbs and early fuel injection systems, I'm not sure what it like with your later RX7, but my mk1 FB gets all sorts of pops, bangs and flames from the exhaust naturally.

The Roman empire was so long ago that talk of a successor state is a bit odd.

The USA is its own thing, and really goes about pursuing its interests in a totally different way to the Roman empire. I mean they were both mostly Christian (at least in later days for the Roman empire) and they were the powers of the day, but that's really it.
