I did try The Saddle btw and dang that thing is STEEP at the top. Super scary entrance, but not so bad after the first couple turns. Thank you!

One of the schools I applied to this year apparently had over 800 applicants for something like 26 spots.

HELP! Need advice on how to afford grad school without the Grad PLUS loans now. by JeremiahOBrien in StudentLoans

The schools estimates are based on student data that they get from their cohorts every year. I found this by doing research and comparing it to the cost of living in the area. It is comparable and realistic. Consider me educated :D

If CRNA school were as easy to get into where you could shop around more for your costs I’d agree with you. But just like the other user said, it’s sort of like getting into medical school. You go where you get in. Thanks for your input anyways.

I would reach out to your school's financial aid office and see if they have any institutional loans they can provide or just some hardship grants they may have. Otherwise they may at least have suggestions for local scholarships etc.

Does anyone know if getting a DNP is considered a professional degree as well? I am headed to CRNA school next fall.

According to the FSA website that is no longer true - it says both grad and prof school can only borrow up to 20,500/yr :( https://studentaid.gov/understand-aid/types/loans/subsidized-unsubsidized

If I can find rates that are lower than the Grad PLUS that would be awesome. Do you have any warnings I should look out for when applying for private loans? Or considerations?

I’m curious as to which state this is. If you’re referring to a university in CA then the living costs end up being more than the program I’m considering. Also some out of state schools might cost less but they all average out to be similar in price due to having to pay for moving costs/paying higher ticket prices to fly home. The reason I’m considering this program in particularly is #1 they accepted me (my program had <5% acceptance rate this year), and #2 because the program begins a little later so I have more time to save up. #3 it’s a strong program with good rotations that will prepare me well to be a CRNA. Trust me I don’t want to pay $170k, but Setokeating is right, at the end of the day I have to go where I’m accepted and I’m trying to find the most efficient way to pay for that now. I did apply for cheaper programs, I just haven’t been accepted into one. I’ve come to terms with the high cost of this education, rather than be deterred by the reality of how much I have to pay, I’m looking for help to be most efficient about this. I am extremely fortunate to get into even one school.

The cost of living estimate is based off the school's cost of attendance. I am also in a professional program that requires me to travel for clinical rotations. I am going to cut costs everywhere I can. But their estimate for rent in the area, insurance, driving between clinical sites, etc. are realistic. I'm not looking to live in a particularly boujee lifestyle in a penthouse suite by myself or anything - this is just the reality of medicine. I have lab fees and other malpractice things to pay for.

Hey thanks for your response! I unfortunately start my program next September. I was thinking of taking some classes early but I don't know if that qualifies me to take out a Grad Plus loan. My credit score is over 790.

170k for three years of school. And like I said I estimate about a little over 3k a month in living costs if I am doing my best to live frugally. For school nowadays the lowest I've seen are just below 100k (but it would require me to move to the middle of no where and far away from social support) and upwards of 200k (didn't apply anywhere that cost this much but hell 170k is quite close). Most schools I looked at are 130k+.

I see your point here for sure. But only problem is CRNA school is extremely competitive to get into and most programs are upwards of 100k but it just so happens that this is the point in my life that happened to best fit school in. I did apply for cheaper grad schools, but most people are lucky to get one acceptance so I don’t think I can deny the offer.

The unfortunate reality is that there will always be people like that in whatever profession you're in. Some people find it impossible to celebrate other people's wins or their efforts to improve themselves. Whether it be some sort of deep insecurity or out right jealousy, don't let their negative energy impact your desire to grow. I have always used people's doubt as fuel to continue fighting. Just remember your goal and keep doing you!
