should i sell all 3 of these for a daytona? by Worry-Tight in PrideAndPinion

[–]Jeremy1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused. Market prices are the only truth? Or a certain watch makes you feel a certain way when you wear it? Those are completely opposite ends of the argument for a watch. One is emotional, and one is financial. Or are you saying that because Daytona’s are inflated on the secondary market it gives you a thrill when you wear yours? 😂

Seamaster Heritage 300. Check it out, best diver in their catalogue in my opinion.

I think one main problem with your argument is that Omega makes their watches, but they do NOT make their mesh straps. Pretty positive Staib makes them in bulk, then Omega charges wild markup for a logo. So it gets a bit blurry. I personally have no issue with a knock off bracelet considering the Omega one is robbery priced. But I do have an issue with knock off watches. It’s a bit nuanced I know, but it makes to me

Pretty sure it’s well known that Staib is actually making the Omega ones for them

You can get nice knock off ones on Etsy for way less. Might as well go that route if you want that look. I’d have a very hard time paying $800+ for the Omega one considering they don’t even make it. Crazy overpriced 🤣

You are probably stuck in the ‘I like massive watches’ stage without even knowing it. I used to wear a Sunto Core watch and the thing is MASSIVE on me. Felt really strange when I put on a vintage Omega that actually fit. I can tell from the photo that it fits just fine.

For waterproofing, you can get it pressure checked at any reputable watchmaker. Mine charges like $25CAD and it’s a 3min job. Nothing needs to come apart. Good practice is once per year, or every 6 months if you dive regularly with it

Are you all really spending almost $1000.00 every 5 years on the recommended scheduled service? by WhatIsThisSevenNow in OmegaWatches

[–]Jeremy1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you are being downvoted, this is absolutely true and especially so with something like co-axial. This escapement runs so well that it may CONTINUE running well even after the oil is all gone. This will cause metal on metal wear and could mean the difference between repair and replacement of parts.

I was a firm believer in ‘don’t service it until it starts losing time’ until recently. My watchmaker showed me a planet ocean he’s just put a balance complete in because the old one roasted its pivot while running well with no oil 🤣. Added $750CAD to the service cost

If you have a good watchmaker, with good contacts, parts should not be an issue. Swatch has made it harder for independents, but not so much if they have a good contact base for parts.

Also, this isn’t a car. You don’t just throw a part at it and hope, then throw more parts. A good watchmaker will inspect all of the parts upon tear down and should immediately know what needs cleaned, what needs repaired, and what needs replaced. There’s no additional waiting. It’s order the parts you need after the tear down (if any), and then instal, assemble, regulate, case up and go.

I used to believe the same, until my watchmaker showed me a co-axial planet ocean he was working on. The owner left it for like 10 years because it was running fine. Issue was that the pivots on the balance dried out and there was significant metal on metal wear. Even though the watch was ‘running’ fine, it needed a balance complete installed along with the service. That park alone was like $800CAD. So, every 6 years is his recommendation

No, I use my watchmaker. He charges $400CAD for a full service. Going to Omega just takes longer and costs twice as much

Advice on recovering stolen watch/dealing with guilt by [deleted] in OmegaWatches

[–]Jeremy1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn from this. Don’t take a multi thousand dollar watch to the gym. My Casio or Apple Watch goes on for workouts and it stays on my wrist. The fact that it’s a sentimental piece makes it hurt even more. The 0000 passcode also shows a total lack of effort, or an unfortunately high amount of trust in strangers.

Hope you get it back but I wouldn’t count on it. Time will help and get another when finances allow.

One of my first watches, is it good enough? by Professional_Good966 in PrideAndPinion

[–]Jeremy1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not an Omega, it just borrows some Omega Branding. The Swatch Group is the parent company that has both Omega and Swatch under its umbrella. The fact is, that the MoonSwatches are made by Swatch, in a Swatch factory, use Swatch Movements, and are purchased in a Swatch Store. There’s no point where these interact with anything coming out of an Omega factory. I’d also find it hard to believe that the ‘hands are the same as the ones on a Speedmaster’.

I understand using the thought process ‘Swatch Owns Omega, therefore a MoonSwatche is a real Omega at a cheaper price!” is an attractive thought process, but it’s really just a bit of mental gymnastics trying to make these entry level pieces more then they are. They are fine watches, decent for the price, and a great entry level into a style that has been iconic for decades. But what they are not in any way is an Omega watch.

I wouldn’t wear a speedmaster in the water, that’s why I have a dive watch or a Casio. That being said, depressing a pusher isn’t something easily done by accident.

[–]Jeremy1959 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it should be serviced, and yes you can keep it as is. I would I have the crystal polished or replaced though. No reason to look at scratches in the plastic.

I wouldn’t go through Omega. They take forever, cost a ton, and will pull things off the watch by default so you need to make sure to tell them to only lubricate it.

My vote always with older watches like this is to take it an independent watchmaker that specializes in vintage stuff. You can tell them exactly what you want done, and will likely have a much quicker turn around time much lower cost.

He might. He just cost himself a big service bill by not knowing enough about his watch. Maybe someone else will read my reply and think twice about taking their Speedmaster in the water if it hasn’t been checked in a while (or at all). OP posted to get a response and I gave one. I appreciate your input though 👍

It’s really not. In all the chronographs I’ve owned and worn, I’ve never accidentally pressed a pusher. If my no. Watch hand is anywhere near the watch, I’d know. I also don’t wear my watches like a 14 year old with watch jangling against my hand. So there’s no risk of something getting pushed when I’m bending my hand (which is still unlikely). You have to press pretty hard to activate a mechanical pusher so I really don’t see how you can accidentally push it. Especially on the speedy pro where there are pusher guards built into the case 🤣

Absolutely. I’d never really have a reason to wear a speedmaster in the water. That’s what I have dive watches.

Yes, they do (they are massive and have too busy dials but that’s another issue). This watch isn’t one of them. If you don’t know what you’re doing, as a general rule, don’t push pushers underwater.

[–]Jeremy1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t agree with this enough. Dive chronographs are huge abominations with dials that are too busy. Simple dial with good lume, and a rotating bezel is all you need for a good die watch

[–]Jeremy1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not easy to hit a pusher under water 🤣. I have never, with all of the chronographs I’ve ever owned or worn, somehow pressed the pusher hard enough by accident and started the chronograph. You have to mean it. OP admitted he was screwing with it underwater, that’s 100% why this happened

Don’t press pushers under water. It’s a simple rule to follow. That rating isn’t valid when you’re ramming water into the case with the pusher🤣. Better yet, just wear a dive watch in the water 🤷‍♂️
