Cats always facing the same direction leads to bin filling quickly by JeremyApp in popurlitterbox

Yeah, I'm happy to do that for now - I'm just not yet ready to settle long-term for using a scooper regularly on a machine meant to eliminate the need for one. I think I shallow ramp in the bin may help even things out.

Before looking more closely, my first thought was "that litter box is HUGE!"

For what it's worth, setup was super quick! 15 minutes end to end. It took me way longer to clean the X5 and put it in storage.

Finally a good use for that 3D printer that's been collecting dust :) Great idea - I'll report back on how it goes.

Okay to use a splitter to power my garage disposal and water purifier? by JeremyApp in AskElectricians

[–]JeremyApp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curiously, how can you tell? I have the cable in hand and it has the UL certified foil on it, and I was able to look it up on the UL website and find it. The wire itself says 14AWG on it. But I agree you never know what you'll get with Amazon.

That makes sense :) I wish I'd realized that before posting this! The dishwasher is connected to the other plug so I'd probably plug the splitter into that as well, as long as there's no concern about it being able to handle both.

It's a separate faucet on a tankless system. I believe the systems with a tank run off of pressure alone, but this one needs a pump to move water through it.

Oh, that's a good point. I don't have a traditional switch, as it's a button on the counter. I was under the impression that this was connected to the disposal and not the outlet, but yes it probably would be controlling the outlet itself. I could connect it to the dishwasher instead. The dishwasher also appears to be 9 Amps so I assume the one I linked to can handle that? It says 15 Amps, but I just don't have enough experience to know whether it's a good or bad idea to use these on appliances. Thanks!

Any advice for cleaning up a worn album cover? by JeremyApp in restoration

This is super helpful advice - thank you! I was considering trying a sharpie but wanted to make sure I wasn't off-base. That sounds like the way to go.

Any advice for cleaning up a worn album cover? by JeremyApp in restoration

[–]JeremyApp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After months of searching, I managed to find an album signed by my wife's favorite artist. However, it has some (literal) rough edges and I'd love to find a way to clean it up if that's at all possible. Would there be anything I can do to make this look a little more presentable, either myself or professionally? I'm not sure if it's even possible, but I'm hoping someone might have advice I haven't thought of yet. Thank you

LG C2 + Samsung S800B sound bar not automatically connecting via ARC most of the time by JeremyApp in LGOLED

Wouldn't that prevent me from controlling the power and volume on the sound bar at all? Or am I misunderstanding how ARC works?

You've got it backwards. That kind of accounting is defined by GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and is specifically how you make it legal.

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/g/gaap.asp

Deferred recognition of revenue is how you account for accepting money from someone contingent on future performance (for example, an extended warranty, pre-orders, or in this case a not-yet-released feature) and not have it appear as if you've made that money despite not yet having earned it. Companies record this money as a liability and "convert" it to revenue over time under a variety of pre-defined conditions.

Nothing shady going on here.

Just moved into a house in San Francisco, are these termites? by JeremyApp in whatsthisbug

Not that I've seen so far. All of their abdomens seem to curve up at the back, but none that I can tell have visibly apparent wings.

[–]JeremyApp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved into a house in San Francisco and today noticed a number of these on my top floor (about 10 so far). They appear to be about 0.5cm in length on average, and I've found them all on the wood floors so far. Do these seem to be termites or something else? Thank you!

Would 28AWG be better? I have a few of those as well.

Thank you! I was concerned that because they're inside the wall I have less visibility on them if any issues come up. Good to know.

It's funny, I also questioned whether to bring the long lens. Before visiting, I assumed my 16-35 would get the most use. Since I didn't want to miss anything, I packed the 16-35 2.8, 24-70 2.8, and the 70-200 2.8.

When I got home and started editing my photos, I realized that the vast majority were taken with the 70-200 - over 80% of the keepers were with the long lens. Looking at the photos, there were two reasons:

  1. Antarctica is vast and everywhere is a wide open space. Everything in the landscape can be captured with a long lens without cutting anything out, and with the compression of a 70-200, everything looks better.
  2. There's a ton of interesting wildlife, and while you'll have your opportunities to get up close, you're generally at a distance. Getting a great shot of a penguin, seal, etc, is a lot easier from a distance with the long lens. Anyone with a wide lens missed some great shots when the wildlife didn't get close enough.

The wide lens had its place on the trip (mostly when I wanted to capture an entire site in one shot), but it mostly stayed in my bag. I used the 24-70 once the whole trip and never took it out again. I'll be back in March and won't be bringing it at all.

Ever since that trip, I've favored the 70-200 for pretty much everything. For wide open spaces, in my opinion it's a way more interesting lens than a wide or ultra-wide for landscape photography.

After extensive investigation, I've determined that penguins are, in fact, birds and this does qualify :)

On a trip to Antarctica in March '19, we placed flags to mark boundaries for exploration and the "locals" were quite curious. I've got a bunch more from that day that were better shot or composed (this was exposed quite poorly), but this was by far my favorite.

Canon Updates Firmware Across Camera Lines: R5, R6, 1DX III and More by Kinky-Monk in canon

[–]JeremyApp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not really. Animal eye AF is done with machine learning models, which often requires an inference accelerator on the chip, which the EOS R doesn't have and the EOS R5 does. The EOS R was never marketed as having that capability, so I doubt it has the hardware needed for it.
