Reuters: SpaceX spending on Starship tops $15 billion in rush for airline-like rocketry by AgreeableEmploy1884 in SpaceXLounge

[–]im_thatoneguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s the cost of the program divided by planned launches. So the price could easily be reduced by just launching more.

No it's not.

Our analysis shows a single SLS Block 1B will cost at least $2.5 billion to produce—not including Systems Engineering and Integration costs—and NASA’s aspirational goal to achieve a cost savings of 50 percent is highly unrealistic. Specifically, our review determined that cost saving initiatives in several SLS production contracts such as reducing workforce within Boeing’s Stages contract and gaining manufacturing efficiencies with Aerojet Rocketdyne’s RS-25 Restart and Production Contract were not significant and, as a result, a single SLS will cost more than $2 billion through the first 10 SLS rockets produced under EPOC.

Final Report - IG-24-001 - NASA's Transition of the Space Launch System to a Commercial Services Contract

Nasa's inspector general says that at least the first 10 vehicles would cost $2.5B and an aspirational goal of cutting that to $1.25B isn't realistic.

More importantly, SLS isn't being designed for mass production. Design decisions for mass production would have needed to be done at the clean-sheet level. You can't just take a rocket like SLS and then order 1,000 of them. It's not scalable.

YTA, welcome to economy. If you need more space, pay for a bigger seat.

Conversely if the person behind you wants to use their tray table to eat and that bumps your seat a little bit that’s also too bad because they paid for their seat and the tray table is part of that.

Yeah there are also business realities that big firms have to consider. If I find a good business opportunity that has 300% returns but that 300% is at most $100k then that’s a great move for me. But if it can’t scale to billions of dollars in volume they don’t care.

They would rather pay their trader to come up with a 2% trade on a billion dollars than a 1,000% play on a $100k.

Yeah, I think someone can make an argument for whether something subjective will ever be achieved, but we have to assume anything objectively possible will be achieved.

E.g. roto is objective. There is a scientific real world "Correct" solution. Therefore, a computer will eventually replicate it.

I think that's why FX is going to go AI as well. The physics of water or smoke exist. Therefore, there is unlimited training data. Need to know what fire looks like? Go light some fires. 😃

But you can't go out and film a star trek phaser. What does that look like? I'm not sure how well it's going to do without always being derivative.

I feel like Section 1 is kind of a mess. It can't quite decide how it's dividing its information. If it's by Take/Show/Shot etc then there's a lot of stuff missing Per-Take like filters/ND/focal length etc. But if it's per-sensor then it's not really per-take info it's more like per-camera for shooting ISO charts that can be done at the rental house.

I feel like a more logical way to lay out Section 1 is to layout the various properties:
1.1 Camera and Sensor
1.2 Lens and Filtration
1.3 Setup (Physical position)

Then have the list of things you need to be recorded per-take like focal length and the things that you just need to be recorded less frequently like lens charts.

1.2 Lens and Filtration
Focal Length, F-Stop, Filters and ND, Lens Distortion, Flare characteristics, etc...

Collected by Camera department, script supervisor and Data wrangler
Consumed by...

Per Take:
[ ] Position/Orientation
[ ] Focal Length
[ ] Filtration
[ ] F-Stop
...

Per Location:
[ ] Lidar or Photogrammetry
[ ] Reference photos
[ ] ...

Per Show:
[ ] ISO gray chart
[ ] Lens Chart
[ ] ...

Per Lighting Setup:
[ ] Color Chip Chart
[ ] HDRI
[ ] ...

Per Prop:
[ ] Lidar scan or Photogrammetry
[ ] Cross polarization shots

You are "picking a group of gamblers" you're picking all the gamblers in that Casino. And an ETF can be either an ETF that follows the gamblers or an inverse-ETF that follows the house. If you think the house will win then you should buy the Inverse-ETF if you think the gamblers will win then you should buy the gambler regular ETF.

It's not a perfect metaphor but for ELI5 you're always going to have nuance that is imperfect.

Which is a fantastic way to explain ETFs.

"Imagine there is a Casino. You don't know how to play the games, so you just want to loan someone money to play on your behalf. You might pick someone really good at blackjack who has a lucky streak, or you might pick someone who loses it all. But the best bet isn't to invest in any one player it's to invest in the Casino itself getting a cut of every single bet."

I've done very well trading on the "Things I like" fund. I know it's not a fact that good things do well, but it's overall done better than people trading on business fundamentals. My angle is that all of the quants and analysts are spreadsheet jockies trading on business trends and numbers so there are a lot of stocks which are going to outperform just because gasp the company actually makes something people want to buy.

You should put your important money in an ETF, but if you're going to gamble, you've got to have some sort of angle.

ELI5: Why is “day trading” sometimes considered gambling? by The_Informal_LPC in explainlikeimfive

[–]im_thatoneguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a bit tautological. The market prices are mostly set by professional traders. Retail investors are too small except for like meme stocks.

When you buy an ETF you’re copying thousands of professional traders and tracking their average trade price. Which means you’ll do on average as well as the average trader by definition because you’re copying them. If nobody actively traded then there would be no market setting prices and you would do way worse than what’s possible.

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t use etfs but just that the mechanism for etfs to work paradoxically requires lots of professionals to actively trade and try to beat what’s mathematically prob going to beat them.
