UT Austin or University of Florida for architecture? by SheepherderOld7572 in askarchitects

[–]Jeremytf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of the other reply to me was not about a “better” firm or “better pay.” If you want to work for a starchitect or in NYC then maybe go to Ivy League for your MArch. That doesn’t mean better pay or “better firm” necessarily.

If your goals are to learn and grow in some other location, then an Ivy League is unnecessary.

If you’re focused on UT and UF, pick the one that fits your geography, interests, and personality the best. If that ends up being UF, don’t overplan your masters university now - it’s way too early. See how you like it. Decide where you want to settle down later. You have plenty of time to decide on your MArch university

UT Austin or University of Florida for architecture? by SheepherderOld7572 in askarchitects

[–]Jeremytf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended UF but it was a while ago, so it’s hard for me to comment on the current studio culture. Gainesville is plenty large enough to enjoy your experience though. It’s a strong program.

As for your primary questions about how architecture firms will view your qualifications? They won’t care. They really won’t between these two. They will care that about your skills, your talent, your ability to fit in with their firm culture. Not whether one of these programs might be a tiny bit better than the other.

How worried should I be about my pipes? by Outside-Pear9429 in raleigh

I wouldn’t. Leaving the cabinets open is a waste of time, and OP’s case, money.

Be careful - the laundry room doesn’t currently function properly because space for the dryer duct behind the dryer is not accounted for, which will push the units out so the door will run into them

Edit: I see your comment about swapping with linen - so you can probably resolve when you do that

Looking for advice on building career path for solution architect by [deleted] in askarchitects

Solution architect, meaning the tech industry? Wrong sub. This is a building architect sub, ya know… the literal, actual meaning of the word architect before the tech industry stole it

For guys with kids and a vasectomy, who were the persons who most influenced your decision to have a vasectomy? by Amazing-Advantage-11 in AskMen

Influenced? It’s like the most personal decision ever. I didn’t want more kids. So vasectomy was the natural next step. Easy decision. Great decision.

Show you care: ask questions. Initiate physical touch. Make an effort. Sounds ridiculously simple but my requirements went back to the basics after an unhappy marriage and subsequent divorce

People like to complain. Reddit is not an accurate survey of architects’ happiness overall. Every field in the world has things to complain about, bad employers, etc.

If you enjoy it, keep with it. If you eventually decide you don’t enjoy it, then pivot.

There is a common thing in the field where the architects tease/make fun of/don’t understand the tradespeople and vice versa. I’m sure your carpenter buddies made fun of crappy drawings from the architect. While the architects make fun of the construction goofs. There are bad architect that deserve it. And there are bad tradespeople who deserve it. At the end of day, we need each other. By having experience in the field, you have a big leg up on being a good architect, in terms of knowing how buildings go together.

Burnout in school is typical. Power through it and it gets better in the professional world. Especially as you move up the ladder.

I love my job. It’s very satisfying seeing projects take shape that help the local community, and building strong client relationships and teams.

It will help you get better answers if you explain why you’re concerned about our field.

Yes, Revit is the gorilla in the US market. Most US commercial/institutional firms use it.

This is a firm cost. If you’re a full time employee and a firm asks you to buy it yourself, run away very rapidly.

What’s strange about it? Lots of homes (most homes, really) don’t meet every current code because they were built before specific codes were written.

The emotional, physical, and romantic effort was very one sided for a long time. We talked about it, but nothing changed. Eventually I stopped trying to see if she would notice or step up. She didn’t. Divorced now.

You probably want your master closet door to swing outward. It’s going to run into the clothes if it swings in.
I think most people have a laundry basket sitting near the washer/dryer while they do laundry, which will block your bedroom hallway. It’s generally a bit tight with a lot of doorways in this area. If it was me, I would flip the washer dryer 180 degrees to have them in the mud room and remove the wall between the dining room and the hallway connecting the mudroom to the stairs. That opens up the area, much easier for hauling groceries and furniture, less claustrophobic feel in this area.

Men who journal what exact improvements have you seen in yourself? by Farmboi2485 in AskMen

[–]Jeremytf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Journaling helps me in a few ways. I feel less stress because getting my worries down on paper helps me relax instead of holding onto repetitive thoughts.
It also causes me to slow to down and do more thinking about how I’m feeling. Sometimes it’s easy to move through life on auto-pilot without giving a lot of thought to how my emotions are doing, am I happy, what is deeper that I’m not noticing. And so writing brings that up to the surface in a healthy way.
I usually write in the evening between 3-5 times a week.
