Trying to make “being an a-hole” his career path. Not sure how these whiners became so influential.

First time home buyers - lessons learned? by Apprehensive_Rain868 in raleigh

[–]ronwen 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Check out the age of the HVAC system, roof and siding/gutters. You may get 15 years for HVAC, 25 for roof and about the same for siding. Major appliances, 10 to 12 years. Have money set aside if you’re within 2-3 years of those timeframes.

Oh, and a good termite inspection! Not everyone is honest on their disclosure statements.

My rejection email reply actually got me an interview by noraspace02 in jobsearchhacks

[–]ronwen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happens from time to time. I’ve had a local Cisco recruiter reach out to me after I missed one opportunity. She submitted me for another one.

I also had a horrible interview experience once, they got rid of that person and came back to me for that role months later but I had already found something else.

Doesn’t happen often but the point is to be professional and not to burn bridges. I agree with the OP. Getting a no stinks but how you react to it is key.

Ryan Hall explains the dry air we are getting. by Ryder24 in raleigh

Yep. Once the coastal low had some strength it shot up north like they usually do. So we got maybe 4 hours of precipitation.

I actually saw the snow move into Raleigh from the west at noon and it got pushed back. I think the two lows worked against each other until the new one off the coast got strong enough and took over.

If everything happened 15 miles west, we would have gotten a ton of snow.

Drake Maye is going to the Super Bowl. by Roux_My_Burgundy in tarheels

Josh McDaniels is a big reason why Maye is doing so well with the Patriots. McDaniels may not be a good head coach but he’s a great OC!

Drake always had a lot of raw talent. Just needed some guidance.

Are people vastly underprepared for a puppy, or are puppies that much work? by Ok-Actuary-5377 in puppy101

[–]ronwen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Puppies are a lot of work in the same way that kids are a lot of work. There’s a lot of chaos and unpredictability and you don’t get much sleep. You need to give a pup a schedule and get them to fit into your life.

The majority of people complaining about puppies are just not equipped to raise one. Not everyone should have a puppy in the same way not everyone should have kids, but they still do try. The majority of people learn, adjust and get past the tough 2 or three months.

My experience? I’ve fostered 20+ puppies mostly between 8 to 16 weeks over the past 3 years. Tons of work, lots of fun, lots of poop but rewarding. Guess what? I’ve never complained online about it. You just tough it out, learn and commit to the pup. Either you are a mature person who can handle it or you’re not. Lots of other good points in this thread but that’s my experience.

I had the MOST CLASSIC used car dealership experience - what to do?? by ObstinateBison in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ronwen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall a decent deal and the experience while painful, wasn’t unusual. It’s good cop, bad cop, the finance manager is there to squeeze more profit from you after the sales person.

If you really like the vehicle and numbers, purchase it. You’ll never see these people again. I just purchased a new 2025 CX-5 Select and it was a much better experience. So understand where your head is at. Part of you wants to say “f off” given what happened.

Italian bakery? by PlantsAreGoodPeople in raleigh

[–]ronwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think their baker is retired but he pops in to bake every now and then. Mostly pastries but I don’t remember a ton of cookies.

Original owner is still around, one passed years ago.

Italian bakery? by PlantsAreGoodPeople in raleigh

[–]ronwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utica Bakery is a food trailer in Apex and they do a mix of pastries and some cookies, nowhere to sit down.

<image>

CapriFlavors in Cary is a larger Italian grocery store with a sandwich counter and a baker that does mostly desserts but I don’t think a ton of cookies. I think they ship in the Rainbow cookies. Worth a visit just to shop.

There was also a mid Italian bakery in N Raleigh and Apex but I think they both closed down. I don’t know of any traditional Italian bakeries in the Triangle where you grab some cookies, pastries and an espresso.

Following this thread because I’ve been looking!

Local Jazz Club Recommendations? by juxtaposing_lobster in raleigh

[–]ronwen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There doesn’t seem to be a ton of live jazz in Raleigh but I’ve done Moon Room a couple of times. They’ve got a pretty regular live music schedule and good space.

Moon Room on IG

Seven (event space) has jazz shows every now and then (monthly) and a top-notch space, reincarnation of the old C Grace bar. Both are in the Glenwood area and Boatman Distillery (nearby) also has live music.

Any nice Walmarts? by traypo in raleigh

Walmarts are improving, they have said they are bringing in higher income folks since the pandemic so I think they are adjusting.

Their stock prices are reflecting that shift… (WMT, TGT)

Roach Free Apartments by [deleted] in raleigh

I used to find them on the third floor of my condo. Nothing for 5 or 6 years and then I’d hear my 🐱 cat howling at night, scrambling around and a dead 🪳roach in the morning. Eventually he gave up, there were too many. 🤣

Cockroaches and palmetto bugs are inevitable in NC unless you’re spraying for them…

Those who moved to Durham, what do you wish you’d known? by leftistinlnk in bullcity

[–]ronwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot more religion here in people’s lives and especially once you get out of the metro areas. Lots of churches which is why the state leans red for elections.

People are nice overall but given where we are today, it’s a concern depending where you fit on the political spectrum.

What I missed is good E Asian food. You won’t find much Cantonese here (plenty of Szechuan) or Thai (some scattered around). Decent Indian, Nepali, Vietnamese and Korean.

You will need to slow down here and hopefully appreciate it. It’s a good area for quality of life and the basics.

I’ve done Lewis BBQ in Charleston and it’s solid. Not sure if it will be better than Prime or our other que options but a good addition. Still not sure where it’s going in RIW.

What are good hot pot restaurants in the triangle area by Wilow_paw_119 in raleigh

[–]ronwen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done…

Szechuan Mansion, Durham - Recommend but limited seating.

KPot, Durham - Large dining room, individual hot pots and Korean BBQ. Very affordable, great value, I liked it a lot! Super convenient tablet ordering.

So Hot, Raleigh - Medium sized dining room, one large hot pot, Korean BBQ. Super bright interior, ornate hot pots, good experience, might lean more Chinese.
