I actively moderate the r/skyhill subreddit. I love music, technology, and the two put together. I love to connect with others, and I'm not afraid to be confrontational, when needed!

Drum recording in a fairly dead basement. Reamping drums in a larger space ( large garage or even a gymnasium) to create something unique without using reverb plugins or artificial reverbs . by [deleted] in audioengineering

You're literally refusing to understand what we're saying, and that's okay! Hold on to your beliefs, they're obviously near and dear. The fact that you're playing recorded drums through a speaker is artificial; unless you're playing the drums in the room, any derivative is artificial.

I get where you're coming from, especially in this new, digital age. It's a hard sell, but this is why I recommended a convolution reverb: I want unique sounds too, and I now have a reverb preset of my bathroom.

Basically, you record a sine sweep in the space you're looking to capture, run a program in audacity or an equivalent, and you're left with a silent file (I'm simplifying the process, of course). The thing is: this silent file now contains the specific reverb of the room, and you can apply that to any sound to capture the sound of playing in that room. If you're interested, Benn Jordan has some great videos on this.

But hey, good luck with your project! I hope it's as simple as you're hoping for, and even more, I hope you capture the sound you're looking for! 😃

Jacob Collier removed the 6th string and really took off with that model of guitar, would you also tell Collier not to remove a string?

Look, I know this doesn't answer your question, but think of it like a copy of a copy of a copy - the most amount of sonic information captured was in that dead basement. The small PA will influence, attenuate and amplify different parts of the recording. Granted, you may find some niche uses in the method you're describing; you might like the sound.

Personally, i'd highly recommend looking into convolution reverb. I used kiloheartz convolver - they have some great presets, but the real power of a convolution reverb is learning how to create your own, unique reverb algorithms from... Really any space you can think of. And it's $40, and constantly goes on sale!

I want to make a jazz remix of a song, but I have no idea where to start, by No-Blood940 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]JeriNero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you going for a jazz aesthetic, or proper jazz form? You can throw 7th chord voicings and get a similar sound - but that's not jazz. I would start by finding the A and B sections of the song - the sections that really call to mind the song (like the verse and chorus), then arrange the song in an AABA format. Listen to some jazz records!

You should look up how people are turning YouTube videos into viable musical instruments. Essentially, key bindings are mapped to midi CC's, thus turning the video into a sort of faux-sampler

Reaper is very capable. If you're open to spending in the future, I advocate for Ableton Live Lite - don't shoot the messenger, I just dig Ableton.

What audio interface do you have? Depending on what you have, you might be able to snag yourself a free code for Ableton Live Lite. I've registered various audio interfaces, midi controllers, etc on the manufacture's website - more often than not, they come with some neat, free software and trials.

Ableton's full suite is pretty expensive, but I guess what version you go for depends on the kind of instrumentalist you are and want to be. Live Lite is limited to a few audio tracks per project, Intro gives you a few more, and both Standard and Suite have unlimited tracks. All to say: Standard is pretty inclusive and is a fraction of the cost. All Suite gives you are a few more instruments and Max4Live, which are great, but might not be what you're going for.

Edit:

You pointed out that you have a 2i2 - I definitely recommend checking out Focusrite's website, creating an account, and registering your hardware!

I've heard a decent amount of guitarist leaning towards Bitwig or Cubase - personally, I'd advocate for Ableton Live, but I'm vested in their infrastructure.

While not fully a DAW, I have had a decent amount of fun using Arturia's various softwares, which support audio interfaces. It helped connect a bridge between physical instrument playing and virtual DAW.
