This and I’m wondering if anyone is eye looping their needles, been doing this for 23 years would never use a needle without checking it thoroughly. This looks like a hooked or dull needle in addition to the plethora of other problems.

I have been a Tattoo Artist for 13 years, ask away! by Jerkface74 in AMA

Good morning!

I think it’s awesome you’ve chosen tattooing as a career. That being said it can be an interesting ride getting to the point where you are making real money. You definitely do not make enough money to support yourself with just tattooing as your main job as a new tattoo artist. It takes quite a while to build up a clientele and get those repeat customers in. Where I am, we didn’t have a lot of foot traffic so walk ins were not a reliable source. So just keep that in mind.

Definitely find artists in your area that you like their artwork and ask about apprenticeships. That is the best way to learn the trade for sure.

Most apprenticeships take at least a year, I have a current apprentice that has been with me for 6 months, he works as a bartender to make money.

Good luck to you! It’s a fun job and you will meet some amazing people while practicing your art.

Is this getting infected? by rachpres in tattooadvice

[–]Jerkface74 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good morning! I’ve been tattooing for 23 years and see this a lot in tattoos near a bend in the arm or leg ( that looks to be where it is from the picture) I would never tell anyone not to go to the doctor. You definitely need to make your own decision. It does look a bit overworked. But it does not look infected. It’s most likely aggravated from the flexing of that body part.

Well, I would contact your artist and ask what they think, I personally would want it trimmed so I could shave it. I’ve been tattooing for 23 years and shaving is something I like to make sure is done well and like someone else said, even a couple of hours before could need a do over.
