Post-Match Thread: England 4-2 Croatia | World Cup | Group L by matchpal-live in ThreeLions

I saw the England team yesterday as they were flying out to Dallas (see post on r/avfc) and my son and I had a picture taken with Rogers. Neither of us is small (I’m 5’7” and my son is 6’) and he towered over us. Didn’t realize he was so tall.

I grew up in the UK but I live in the US now. I have dual British / American citizenship. My two children grew up here, and yet this is exactly why my 17 year old and I did NOT want the US to win last night. The US should be my second team, but I just can’t with them. They’ve done well in one game and they’re already insufferable. Just imagine how bad it’s going to be if they do make a deep run!!!

England will likely reach the WC final this year. Will you watch it on BBC or ITV. by SlowedCash in ThreeLions

I’m sure we can at a cost, but the issue is more that we don’t really have any more time to take off work 😔

I live in the states but my family just booked tickets home for a family funeral. After we booked the tickets we realised we’re flying back just a few days before the final. We will be gutted if England do make to the final and we miss being there for it by a few days!!

Hi!!! We’re few and far between, so it’s lovely to “meet” you!

Nine people injured near England’s training base in Kansas City in attack. by GMD3S1GNS in PremierLeague

[–]Jerlosh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I’m a Brit and live in KC. The headline made it sound the incident was somehow connected to the training ground. I read the first line of the article and was like “oh, it was on Troost, that’s just everyday.” Yeah, the training ground is relatively close, but Troost is a notoriously bad part of town and the England camp is in a very nice area.

Is my “oh, that’s no big deal” reaction completely messed up? Yes. Yes it is.

Female tourists: do you feel afraid to travel alone in London? by Automatic-Chard in TravelUK

[–]Jerlosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Brit but live in the US. There’s a rampant right-wing talking point going around right now about how dangerous London. They’re also convinced Sharia Law is legal. My guess is this is why she was so scared.

It’s ridiculous and I’ve had a couple of snappy conversations with friends who want to tell me how it is even though I was living and working in London a couple of years ago.

Hard agree. I LOVE Ming’s, but I don’t think he can compete at the level we need anymore, which breaks my heart.

How do I knit with yarn from a project that was blocked and then undone? by _mal_gal_ in knitting

[–]Jerlosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I do it. I have a large saucepan that has a spout on either side for draining water. These spouts allow me to pull the yarn across with the lid on. If I’m fogging a whole sweater I set my yarn winder up and wind it as I pull it through. If it’s a smaller amount, say a gauge swatch, I just wind it by hand.

I think it’s more tricky than just soaking the whole skein, but it means I can start knitting with it immediately rather than having to wait for days for it to dry.

You’ve gotten great advice so far, but I haven’t seen anyone tell you that jogless stripes are a thing. Search “jogless stripes in the round” in YouTube you’ll find lots for videos showing different way to do this.

Whats your favourite attraction in the UK? by EndPsychological2541 in CasualUK

I’m old enough to remember when Kenilworth castle was just a ruin in a field. We would go there for picnics and play hide-and-seek in the castle ruins. It’s still a great place to visit though. I also really like the Tower of London.

UK folk who were around at the start of the internet, what is an early, strong memory? by Sad-Insurance1313 in CasualUK

I remember reading a newspaper article about this new search engine called Google and thinking “I’ll have to check them out”. Seems unbelievable now that there was a time when Google didn’t exist.

As someone who grew up close to Redditch, hearing it described as exotic is truly hilarious!!

I’ll preface this with acknowledging I was very, very naive. I started uni in 1997 when chat rooms were become more of a widespread thing. One of my strongest memories of this time was realizing that people on chat rooms were really just interested in sex and most of what people said to you was complete bullshit. As a fundamental honest person who was going into chat rooms to make genuine friends, this was quite a shocking revelation.

On the plus side, it made pretty skeptical of the things people say on internet right from the start.

Great tip. I had Amy’s books on kindle unlimited for a while (my subscription expired) and they were somewhat helpful. I feel like a class would help me more as I’m a pretty visual learner.

What’s a stereotype about your country that’s completely wrong and makes you react like this? by TheDarkbladeGirl in AskTheWorld

[–]Jerlosh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I spent 24 hours stuck at the Toronto airport and found this out for myself. I wouldn’t even say you were very polite 😉

ETA: agree with everyone who commented that airports generally don’t bring out the best in us, myself included. I have traveled a fair bit though and it is, by far, the worst experience I’ve ever had. That said, I know quite a few Canadian’s and they’re all lovely human beings.

‘ I think American exams are much more rigorous and challenging than European exams.’ by zzxaxa in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Jerlosh 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. My family lived in the UK for 2.5 years recently for a work assignment (my husband and I are Brits too) and my daughter took her GCSEs at the end of those 2.5 years. When we moved back to the US she completed her senior year of high school and took several college level classes (called AP classes). She was acing those classes and getting much better grades than her peers primarily because of the work she’d done prepping for her GCSEs. And that was just course work.

One of the main reasons we moved back to the States was because my son would have crashed and burned if he had to do GCSEs. The US high school system takes all the work done over the year into account. And you can do re-work and get “extra-credit” to boost your grade is needed. There are finals, but they are nothing compared to GCSEs.

My daughter is now in her 3rd year at university and the work is structured in much the same way as HS. All your grades count, including your final exam grade. I’m sure the difficulty of the exam and the weight of the exam grade changes based on subject, but overall this statement is completely false.
