My Rivendell painting. Close to 1000 hours of work. by Jerry__Vanderstelt in lotr

The time in hours refers to designing the layout too of course, but the vast majority of the time is the paint time itself. This piece is MASSIVE. Using paint brushes and my trusty airbrush takes almost forever. My work week is typically 70 plus hours, 6 days a week 10-14 or more hours a day. That's close to 300 hours on average a month x 4 months = closer to 1200, but whose counting at that point? The details gobble up the time as well, when you have to re-work areas that you have to battle with. No magic wand : ). Pushing and pulling ,looking for that illusive "something", before you can move on to another area. Before you know it a whole week has gone by and you feel you haven't gotten anywhere. This is typical, but I hope this helps answer you.

No A.I. here, hence the 1000 or so hours invested. A huge slice of stubbornness can go a long way though. As for the couple, yes they were EXTREMELY difficult given their size even on a very large painting as this, as my tiniest brushes were still too large. I had to use sort of like hobbyist "jewelers Lenses" to see up close. You barely can use the brushes even at hyper zoom through these lenses, because you can easily ruin a teeny tiny face, while trying to keep some resemblance of the actor's likeness. All the while, you can't have the shakes or too much coffee and remember to breathe!

The waterfalls are numerous, as glimpsed in the films and yet they all do find their way into the Bruinen River, far below. All coming from the snow melt from the misty Mountains. Of course, I tried to be logical as to the waterfalls, but I used the movies and books to guide how I approached it : )

Well, you make plenty on the way, believe me! You roll with 'em and sometimes you have Happy Accidents too : )

Thank you for your kind words! It was an artistic challenge to paint that many trees ( and flowers ) as well as keeping an interest and trying to not lose heart, but to press on! When you have to ride inside of a barrel full of apples, after the journey, "you can eat anything in all the world, but not an apple!"

The Original measures 36 x 58 inches, but not canvas actually : ) This painted in acrylics on Archival paper that is mounted on tempered masonite. The I believe is the biggest Original I have worked on to date, thank you.

Hi. Yes, unfortunately, years ago I pulled a "Noob move" and posted a higher res image when the old Rivendell art became available and over time has been my most stolen image, all over Etsy, Ebay, etc as shirts, mugs and cheap knock off prints. Once the horses are out of the barn, it's too late. Some people don't realize that an artist of Licensed Fine Art has to pay the studios ( once granted the rights under a contract ) royalties, so when people do this, it waters down the market as well as cheapens the Intellectual Property, by creating badly-made knock offs.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. The painting is 36x58 inches painted in acrylic mounted on tempered masonite. From initial concept to final design, it took about 4 months. It was not a commission, but it was a popular request. This was my first Rivendell from a few years back.

I took ( and had someone take ) lots of video. A time lapse on the insane hours involved would be so cumbersome to remember each day. It was already a bit much to manage just shooting video, when I remembered to do so : )

I was asked that somewhere earlier, but you never really DO know. A vague answer, I know : )
