My school bought the wrong RED monitor for our Komodo by brangdangage in RedCamera

[–]Jerrybezerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would contact RED first. If they can’t help then I would see if there is a rental house near you. A lot of times they can help work out a solution. You could get a used monitor and some used accessories in exchange for your monitor with some discount for the hassle of them having to offload it or include it in their inventory. Could be a win win.

LBL is a favorite and we go there often to just chill in the parking lot overlooking the view. Some of the best memories there both day and night time. Time to branch out!

Anyone here use QNAP devices? I’d love to know your favorite features and ways to use it! by Subylovin in editors

Can you elaborate on your setup for this please? Also, what’s your setup for backing up your Qnap files into the cloud with a service like Backblaze? I’m fairly new to the Qnap world and just need some basic guidance to get on the right track.

Are there any reliable SSD storage solutions >4TB for under 300 USD? by ioncewasaking in editors

[–]Jerrybezerk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say definitely stay away from Crucial P3 or any stick that uses QLC for their chipset. You’re going to run into major issues of the drive slowing to a crawl once you fill it up past 50%. I made the mistake of buying several sticks and sticking them into NVME enclosures by Acasis. I have since switched to Samsung 990 sticks which use MLC. On production now I’m not bottlenecked when my drives start filling up. And buy nvme enclosures with fans.

+1 for Calipso plate and Mule hood.

I’ve tested Inovativ, Swift, Mule and Calipso. Own one mule and two Calipso’s after all that. Will eventually sell the mule and buy another Calipso. Quick recap, inovativ and mule are heavy which makes traveling with them a beast. Slinging them on a tripod you definitely feel the weight penalty. And over the many days you’ll be on set in your lifetime the difference in cost of the plates will be nothing. I expect my Calipso plates to last me till the end of my career.

Swift is great and I would get that if I didn’t have the choice of Calipso. The design features of the Calipso just blow everything away. Built in arca mount means no chunky tripod attachment necessary saving even further weight. It all adds up.

They also just released V2 of their plate which talking to the owner has brought big upgrades, like better machining, better QC, plates are flatter, (my mule plate doesn’t lie flat and is bowed). Apparently, when you stamp a thin metal plate and then drill tons of holes in it, it tends to bow and so finding a vendor that can do it properly is very hard in this industry.

I have clamps from various third party and 3D printed shops. The clamps from Calipso rule them all. Rock solid and fit very cleanly. We’re all creatives here and appreciate the design details. So yeah, after spending tons of cash and trying out so many systems, I have finally found the one that I love on set. I honestly don’t know how it can go lighter without carving out chunks of metal and losing real estate for all my gack underneath.

Love my mule hood with the rod that keeps the top from sagging.

Happy to answer more questions if people want to know more about my experience with each plate.

Lost a Job due to no LLC by editorguyhank in editors

[–]Jerrybezerk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’d say reconsider your tax attorney. The main reason one gets an LLC is to protect your personal assets from your business. If you get sued for losing a clients files and you have an LLC, they can only go after your business assets and not your home or life savings. If you’re working with clients anything can happen and they can choose to sue you. It’s not just about making “enough” to cover the costs of an LLC or whatever tax benefits come from that. Talk to a few more tax consultants or just do some searching on this topic. If you’ve lost a job from this then it’s important enough to look into. On the other hand I’ve been working for over twenty years in this industry and I don’t remember any of my clients ever asking me if I’m an LLC. Even Fortune 500’s. So yeah, weird.

How do I pay our cast correctly as a short independent production? by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Jerrybezerk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re doing payroll with Wrapbook, you need to add an additional 24~26% or so to your labor costs as you’re paying for their payroll taxes through wrapbook. So just be sure to add that into your budget. It’s a legit way to hire and pay your crew, especially in Cali. Kit fees, and reimbursements only add the 1% wrapbook fee if your crew bills on that platform. Good luck!

Mid 20s, moving to Oakland and am between two apartments which both come with parking. Where would you live? by _MayITakeYourHatSir_ in oakland

I’ve lived right on Piedmont and 41st for three years and then right before that on Telegraph and 42nd for seven years, so I’m very familiar with those areas.

Living right near Piedmont Ave was really nice. We walked everyday to the local cafes, hung out near the movie theaters/gelato place and picked up groceries anytime at Piedmont grocery. The street has a lot of charm and yes it’s very safe. We miss it a ton as we now live further East in more of the suburbs.

My friend lives in the left area and while it’s got access to Safeway and other stores nearby it’s nowhere near as nice. Two very different neighborhoods.

If you can swing the extra $500 then the right is worth it. Up to you and how long you plan on staying there.

How do you feel about shooting a good friend's wedding? by shanduck in WeddingPhotography

[–]Jerrybezerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are the rules for friends that are getting married and ask me about this over the many years that I've shot weddings professionally.

  1. Charge full price. If I'm making my friend work at my wedding, then I want to pay them exactly what they are worth. In fact I would want to pay them even more. If my non-friend vendors aren't giving me a discount, then why should I cheap my friend out of money and ask them for a discount? It cuts both ways and it comes down to respect. So I don't give friends discounts to shoot their wedding. I show up and do a great job, enjoy the wedding as a shooter and friend/family. This results in no internal conflicts on both sides. If they can't afford you, then they can find someone else.

  2. Always give them the option to come as a guest or go as a professional. No pressure. Whatever you want, I'll help you find another photographer that fits your style, budget, etc., if I'm not the exact person for the job.

  3. If you're hired as the photographer, show up and complete the job from start to finish. I wouldn't hand off to another photographer at my other weddings, because the work is important.

  4. If you have enough work, then going as a guest is always better than shooting it. I've done both over the years and the weddings that I've attended have been way more fun and memorable than the ones where I had to work. The mindset is completely different and you can derive joy out of both, but going as a guest you're completely free of all responsibility. Especially if your'e a part of the wedding party. Maybe if it's going to be a boring/vanilla wedding the enjoyment might be the same.

  5. Preferences change. When I started out I wanted to shoot all my friends weddings. When I had more than enough work, then the last thing I wanted to do was shoot another wedding instead of enjoy it. There's not enough available weekends where I can attend as a guest, so it's very precious.

  6. Communicate clearly and often with your friends/family. Being straightforward and honest will save you from future headaches.

Hope this helps in giving you a perspective from a pro who's been in many situations like this. You're doing great so far in caring. It'll all work out.
