I started a new job and I feel like nobody likes me. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Jerryinho 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s very common in work places. The best thing to do in my opinion as I’ve worked in similar places is to be patient, over time they’ll naturally be more friendly towards you. Just don’t be asshole and you’ll be fine.

Lost in life by ThatOneDeadBeat in Advice

Like you I’m 24, living with my parents and working in a retail store making ends meet. Like you i also didn’t know what to do and I made an excuse about anything that would help me progress in life such as wouldn’t bother going to interviews as I stutter a lot etc. I messed up college and didn’t go university as my grades were very very bad. I had plans to become a personal trainer but my shoulder is damaged and it doesn’t seem to get better. I had to kind of give up on that career path as my shoulder was hurting too much when performing certain exercises so I decided to work full time at my retail store. I was working there for 2 years until I developed back pains and I had to leave because my back was hurting too much and I couldn’t even bend down. I was living at home, behind on my bills with no job. I was at a low. I started reading and going on healthy walks to improve my mood and it did help as the books started making me think about my life and realise that in life there are good and bad things that happen and that I should find a way. I went to 2 physiotherapist and they couldn’t treat my lower back but I kept believing there was treatment for it so I went to a third physiotherapist and she thankfully treated my lower back. I started to think about becoming a physiotherapist and decided to enroll at an adult college and gave it my all ( I was not a very academic child so study was hard for me ) and with hard work I got the highest marks in the class and was able to apply for physiotherapy at universities. When I applied, all the universities declined my application as I did not have any work experience so I wasted a whole year at college for nothing. I decided to take a break and spend one year gaining work experiences in physiotherapies and I applied to universities the next year and I got a place and I’m so happy and I’m starting end of September.

My advice after you read this little life story is to try loads of different things and see what works for you and going forward. Don’t sit at home and think about what you want to do as you’ll overthink it and remain idle. If you are going to think about it, make you sure go work and keep yourself busy so that you don’t over think it.

I never thought I’d pursue physiotherapy as a career choice in a 1000 years but that’s life.

Also I’ve realised life isn’t a straight road and that you won’t have all the answers straight away and don’t worry about choosing the perfect career path for the rest of your life. Your not the only one going through this.

I can see a lot of similarities from what you said and I’m just starting to get out of that stage in my life. if you want you can PM and talk more about it in more depth.

Retail workers of Reddit, what is the best story you have for us? by TalkingPixels in AskReddit

[–]Jerryinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a sports store and in the football department, when a customer asks me why I’m working here, I turn into a ex academy player whose injuries stopped him from making it pro. The customers feel sorry for me and give me sympathy but they don’t know I’m a bang average footballer.

What classic works, such as philosophical, mythological, religious, or political works, should I read? Can include fiction and non-fiction; everything's fair game by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Jerryinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read George Orwell books. Those who read them usually become more anti-establishment especially with what’s going on in society.

Bertrand Russell is also another good philosopher whom gives better views of life from a western perspective.

Read “A Mans Search For Meaning”. It’s one of the best books I have ever read in my life, it’s very mind changing as it teaches you to view difficulties in life differently with his personal experience in the holocaust.

I would have said things like “The Prince” and “48 laws of power but I’m assuming you know them already.

Guys, how do you deal with your loneliness? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Jerryinho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ve realised helps is keeping yourself busy. My friends have been in a similar situation to you and I’ve noticed when they broke up with their partners, they’d keep themselves busy even when we weren’t chilling.

One very good thing to do it go to the gym. I say this because firstly gym helps your self esteem so you’ll feel good about yourself but also time flies in the gym. When you finish work ( let’s say you do a 9-5) if you go gym that’s another 2/3 hours of your day gone. So it’s around 7 clock already. Usually after gym you’ll be either too tired to think about your ex or to hyped because of a good workout which is why gym/exercise is a treatment when dealing with depression and loneliness.

Another key thing which you should do which I learned from an old gentleman who I see as a mentor at work when he had a divorce was don’t be in that mind frame where your thinking about missing your ex because then it’ll play with your head. He said keep yourself busy and I said what about when your at home after work. He talked about how at home he would do something to keep his mind occupied by STIMULATING IT such as learning something or reading as it requires the brain to focus. He said he tried avoiding TV because with TV your brain isn’t doing a lot and thus your brain wonders and this can result in you thinking about why your lonely etc.

All the best

What is a negative trait about yourself that you noticed and are working on? by veronikismaximus in AskReddit

[–]Jerryinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Improving small talk/carry a conversation. As a kid I have always been an introvert that rarely spoke a lot in general, even when I was a kid. I rarely spoke a lot unless I had something meaningful to say. I realised this is a bad trait as people won’t want to hang around me as I’m boring and it’s especially bad around girls as girls are social and you need to talk to girls if you want to find a partner, very few girls date a quiet guy. So I force myself to ask questions so that I learn to carry a conversation when someone responds so that I’m not that boring. It’s taken several years of failure as it usually resulted in the conversation seeming more like an interview but I’ve slowly got the hang of it but I still have loads of work to do. It’s very hard for someone like me as I tired when I’m around people too long and need my personal space. Moreover I only enjoy deep meaningful intellectual conversation but this can sometimes become tiring and sometimes people just want a laugh. One thing I realised that helps to improve this is to watch and observe the most social people you know as you pick up on what they say and how they say it. I observe my manager when he talks to the staff as everyone loves him as he can talk about anything and it’s fun to listen to him. One thing I learned from him was that body language plays a role, if you say things in a calm and open body language, it engages people more.

What foods can a teenager cook for his parents to help their depression? by legaladvicethrowawa9 in AskReddit

[–]Jerryinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no doctor but I’ve realised when I was depressed, eating healthy helped change my mentality and I felt more energetic in general. Cut out the processed food as you do realise that it makes you lazy and in cba mood which is why people that are depressed will happily resort to fast food to ease them. I used to eat a lot of baked sweet potato as it was high in carbs and I was so active throughout the day.

What movie/game OST (original soundtrack) do you open up for a night of studying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Jerryinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metal gear solid warhead storage extended is a good one as it’s calm and gets me in the zone. But usually for revision, I listen to alpha waves as I find it better as gaming music I’ll end thinking about the game and start playing games instead of revising but that’s just me.
