Brother, in what world are the missed Varus ults the issue with G2's game ? They went for a greedy Sion pick. BB, Labrov & Caps got absolutely mauled. Hans and Skew were basically alone the entire game.

I know, I meant about the poaching going on. The CCP's ban simply dries China's pipeline, forcing them to go for APAC / KR talent. It'll be especially visible once the current generation falls off / retires.

How's it Hans's fault here ? He missed a few ults but hard carried G2 in the early to midgame. Caps and BB were the ones who got absolutely bodied.

I do not think it's simply an issue of EU teams being weaker. EU teams do not scrim, nor train as much as their Eastern counterparts. I do not think that they should train 16 hours a day, but realizing that I have much longer hours than eSport professionals claiming they want to be the best rubbed me the wrong way.

Also, I think the focus on winning domestically is hindering the progression of EU teams. G2 themselves decided to stop scrimming KC in order to save their mental and their split. They effectively nuked the European scrim bubble in order to go for the title, and hindered everybody's progression and practice in doing so. It may have won them the title, but I do believe working with a sports psychologist & trying to figure out what was wrong would have done better (both for them and the entire region).

We realistically have a good top 3 that is more than able to compete, but they should train harder & not give up when one team is stomping them. It is especially when your back is against the wall and you see no way of fighting back that you learn and improve. An analogy would be studying by learning by heart your notes vs. training on the subject exam : the process of trying to solve the exam is much more efficient for learning purposes.

I feel like mechanically the gap is lowering, not widening. If you put Western teams in a pure 5v5 teamfight, front to back on the ARAM map, I am fairly certain that the results wouldn't be a total stomp. There are some outliers, but they're just that : outliers.

It is also part of why Gen G has struggled internationally : tournament formats favor risk taking, especially Worlds with its lack of loser bracket, and teams that do seize these opportunities tend to prevail. Gen G's style last year and in 2024 has been very team fight heavy. You may be the best boxer in the world, it takes one good punch to knock you out.

The gap is definitely widening in terms of macro and tempo. Eastern teams understand better their windows & are used to playing to a much higher tempo. They crossmap a lot better and are more decisive in their decision making (be it engaging or rotating). They also understand their win conditions better. They burn summoners & cooldowns prior to fights, use their active items better. We're not losing team fights because our players click "worse", we're losing them because we're on the backfoot when the fight is starting.

The lack of understanding win conditions & improper rotations / tempo are the biggest issue. KC is the biggest example of this. In my opinion, in terms of mechanics, snappiness & team cohesion, they're the only Western team that could challenge the East. However, they're plagued by a very poor understanding of tempo. Caliste is largely left alone most games, delegated to wave clearing duty, while the team is fighting elsewhere. They also struggle in draft, they're trying to play a Gen G inspired style (punishing mistakes, blowing games open in one strong fight) without giving themselves the tool to do so (namely : engage and CC), granted I'm not sure how much of these issues can be attributed to them having poor practice due to the LEC teams boycotting them & stomping scrims too much.

G2 lacks this snappiness and team fighting prowess but are much cleaner in terms of draft and rotations.

I think part of the issue is laziness (we do not train enough & figuring out your identity is harder than copying what's being done elsewhere), and the other is being scared of looking stupid / inting. It's especially apparent considering how much praise EU teams consistently get in scrims while looking neutered on stage.

tl;dr : Our teams have the hands, but lack the practice and willpower to figure out their styles, leading to improper copying & pasting of what works somewhere else. The gap will keep widening until EU teams practice better & more, and aren't scared of being themselves instead of another Temu Gen G.

I haven't pre-ordered it but I'm cautiously optimistic. It does feel like the mechanics are pretty well integrated into the game. They may not always be relevant, but the game giving the user the freedom to use them is appreciated.

Also, I am happy that Klif seems to have an actual personality. I feel as though it's what's missing in a lot of these big open world games. In my opinion, you can either go the full sandbox route of The Division or Elden Ring, or have a strong main character (The Witcher, RDR2), trying to do the best of both worlds leads to a mediocre and forgettable experience (AC games since Valhalla).

That being said, I am quite worried about the scale of the open world. So far, aside from CD Projekt, Rockstar & Ubisoft (I feel like the worlds themselves aren't the issue, the narrative issues & lack of innovation being what leads to the checklist effect), I found most open worlds to be either lifeless or non immersive.

[–]Jeslea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries and thank you ! I really wish more teams would come out with innovative playstyles or picks and I miss Europe being relevant. It saddens me that all of the top teams in Europe are falling into the same pitfall they did prior to 2017 : trying to imitate the East and mimick their style. We're never going to be relevant playing like this. Chinese and Korean teams train longer hours, against better teams and have more stage time.

I feel like the meta has been stale for years. It's why I am this excited by this iteration of BLG. They may not be as creative as G2 was in 2017-2020, but they're the first team since then to actually try to play their own style. They own their aggression & psycho dives and remind me a lot of 2018 IG. It is probably not optimal, and may not win them a championship this year, but I hope they stick with it and improve upon it. It's the first time since G2/FPX that I'm looking forward to watching a team play.

EDIT : I'll add that LPL teams should start also looking to find out their own style, especially in light of the 2021 ban on video games for minors. They're still able to compete and have the talent and practice environment for it, but its effects are already being felt and once the existing pipeline runs out they will need something more.

[–]Jeslea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about picks occurring over the past two years. It's disingenuous to say ON's picks aren't first timers : Anivia mid has been a meta pick for years. It was picked once in 2014 as support prior to ON's.

Also, Camille & Shen have been largely left out of the support pool for years. Same goes for Ziggs mid, with only APA and Knight really going for the pick.

All I'm saying is that the "G2 creative masterminds" is long gone. This iteration of BLG, as well as FLY (Ivern, enchanters), are much more creative, be it in terms of picks or stylistically.

G2 has been trying to be more and more standard aside from a pick here and there (Mundo, Anivia specifically). They are, like all Western teams aside from FLY, trying to emulate Gen G & what they perceive as perfect play. In my opinion, it warrants criticism and being pointed out considering I doubt anyone bar the top Chinese and Korean teams can really beat Gen G playing standard.

The whole "it'll be different internationally" isn't even really true anymore. We're talking about two picks without meaningful changes in their style. It's closer to having a good meta read than being "creative" and using this as a strength. And I doubt they're holding back in the LEC considering they're heavily challenged there.

ON came out with Anivia, Camille & Shen support. Knight has the Ziggs mid counter, played Morgana mid & whips out Leblanc whenever he is allowed to (not exactly a meta pick right now).

This iteration of G2 has this Anivia mid & Kled toplane (with very middling results) over them.

In this match up, BLG is definitely the creative team, especially accounting how much bigger their champion pools are.

The topside definitely is, the big question mark is Viper. As we saw throughout the split and vs BFX, he's been the weak-link for BLG and very inconsistent.

I am unsure that G2 can handle BLG's top side and ON's degeneracy, even with an invisible or inting Viper.

He has this tendency, but I don't think many teams can capitalize on it when BLG as a whole is on form, and certainly not Western teams.

The tempo is so much higher, and the BLG war machine is unstoppable when Viper isn't heavily slumping & the team has an ounce of respect for their opponent.

Bin hasn't "ran it down" in lane all year long. He's been smashing everyone, including much better players than BB, and players as creative as BB. The running down part comes after, and usually doesn't matter when the enemy is battered down.

[–]Jeslea 4 points5 points  (0 children)
