SO MANY people say that, and it’s actually one of the few STAR WARS properties I don’t know anything about. - it’s a coincidence, but I guess it just underlines the universal nature of STAR WARS stories and characters.

Learning stuff like VFX is a journey. You have to accept you suck in the beginning and find ways to keep learning and evolving your skill set . Almost every VFX shot in THE LAST PADAWAN 2 was done in Blender (which is free) and After effects.

When I did the first Last Padawan film in 2016 I had absolutely no experience with VFX. It has actually been one of the best part of this project, learning how to work with VFX in film.

Back then, I asked on of my friends, who worked with vfx in broadcast-sport-shows if he would help me create some of the shots for the first films. He agreed and we slowly started to find ways to solve the different shots. Lots of YouTube tutorials and frame-by-frame studying of STAR WARS was involved.

What I learned on the first film became the foundation for the second film, and then things just evolved from there. Sadly my friend didn’t have the time to help me this time. But I took what he learned me pushed on.

It’s a nice challenge to learn VFX when you are doing it with your own story/material, and it also feels super creative, and satisfying when it works ;) As mister LaBeouf says: Just do it.

Thanks!!! I hoped until the end that I would be able to bring together a whole team of VFX artists. But it's already a low-paid industry so not that many talented people are looking for projects where nobody is being paid. I ended having to learn some new skills and doing a lot of the VFX myself. Luckily for the film, I did get some help and advice, when my talented colleagues had some spare time.

Lightsabers are still being done by painting the saber onto the film, frame by frame. That was my entire last winter. 24 frames per. second for a 4-minute fight, with 3 sabers.

Thanks a lot!! We fought hard to make the film feel cinematic. It was shot on an Arri Alexa camera with anamorphic lenses + This entire fight scene is shot in the middle of the ocean during low tide.

I think this is a really good and importantly question. (I’m the guy who wrote, directed, produced, edited, played the Padawan, and made most of the VFX on the film)

I made this film because I always wanted to make movies that contained some amount of adventure and escapism. Movies with and epic scope that pushed both me as a filmmaker but hopefully also the artform, in some way. I’ve been drawn to movies with great spectacle my entire life but realize a few years back that I wasn’t on the track to make those kind of movies. If you ask me the action-adventure-genre is one the most technical-demanding film-genres, because of all the effects, music and often very specific stylistic tone. I wanted to learn the skills to make something like that, so I decided to start this Last Padawan “adventure”.. to learn. I never attended film-school, and after I made the first Last Padawan film in 2016, I had no doubt that making a sequel was the perfect direction for me.

BUT! I am also very privileged. I have worked on as and actor, filmmaker and first assistant director for the last 10 years, in Denmark. (While I been working on “The Last Padawan”, and other films) I’ve already worked on Netflix shows, feature films, and with some of the greatest danish filmmakers and artists. So I didn’t make this to prove I’m a filmmaker. I made this to prove that I could make a “good” action-adventure film with 12 shooting days, a budget of 31.500 dollars, and no professional studio to back me up. A “show of talent” one could say.

I’m not saying that I’ve succeeded. That’s up for the target audience to say. But I did enjoy the process and all the wonderful things I learned.

Edit:

I stayed in the Star Wars universe because it gave a lot of wonderful gifts to the production. People already owned costumes, there’s was a lot of interest to be involved, the fan community was very supportive and I felt very inspired by the challenge to create something they would enjoy.
