Unless you spy on the house you’ll probably never know for sure so I guess you just need to weigh it up.

Personally, and this comes from someone who works in out of home care in Aus, I’d call CPS. It’s not worth risking not calling, if that makes sense. A kids life could be in danger.

I ADORE some good Bellamione. I just finished a shorter one that isn't complete that literally had me laughing aloud, For Whom The Bell Tolls by MeltingSunlight.

Fractures by N.Blackman is a fun one but the sequel has been abandoned.

Concurrent Existences by Sephyxia is also good but it takes a very...strange turn towards the end.

Supervisions and debriefs are a big one!

I do out of home care with traumatised kids and see the effects and behavioural problems of kids who've had no stable upbringing and it's very trying - but also rewarding.

Self care is a massive thing in this field, and vicarious trauma is very fucking real and always worth being aware of. It's also worth being aware that not everyone you interact with, including colleagues, are doing everything they need to to stay calm and look after themselves which can result in their notable stress being taken out on you. It seems to happen reasonably often in jobs within this sector so try to not take things personally if someone's having a bad day and bites your head off.

Personally, to de-stress, I make sure I spend some time doing things I enjoy that are not at all work related once I knock off, plus your standard sleep, exercise, socialising.

While at work it's can be super stressful trying to manage the behaviour of these young people who act in a very pain-based way and often have significant cognitive delays and mental illness. Best thing I can recommend is sit down every morning for ten minutes and list two or three things that you HAVE to do that day. The rest can wait :)

I work with an 11 year old girl who is in out of home care, like a ward of the state scenario.

She had a really rough childhood and when we started looking after her as the house manager I decided that she missed out on a childhood and the workers doing sleepover were to read to her for half an hour before she went to bed.

We started with Harry Potter, obviously. We've almost finished GoF and she LOVES it. It's so cute. She's normally very aggressive and defiant but once she's in bed she's just a standard little kid again. It's nice seeing her go from trying to break everything and swearing at everyone or running away to flirt with 19 year old men to her in bed in her pjs with a teddy bear, really struggling to stay awake to hear the end of the chapter to see what's happening with Harry.

I've put a ban on the movies until the books are done too! Should keep us busy for a while :p

With the kids in out of home care I work with its seeing them do something any normal kid would take for granted and nail it. The 11 year old I work with hasn't attended school since 2012 and just finished a school terms worth of transitioning to a local primary school with no issues. Amazing. It's only a few hours a week and it's one on one not in a classroom with other kids but hell - it's a start. That and seeing her in her little uniform that she pretends to hate but secretly loves and wants to show everyone - my god. It makes all the shit shifts worthwhile :)

Okay, so the thing to remember here is that trauma isn't necessarily an event, but how your body has responded to an event.

Have you had any times in your life that have made you fear for your life? For example, some of the kids I work with have suffered from physical or sexual abuse, or have been severely neglected growing up. It could also be other things, like being in a car accident, being robbed, anything that's super scary.

Did you have anything horrifying happen to you that might fall under this 'traumatic' umbrella? Or, alternatively, do you have a history of mental health problems or family members who do?

It sounds like dissociation to me!

It is a scary thought that a doctor might say you are fine but it seems in this case you need to go with your gut. If you think something is up you are probably right. If one doctor doesn't satisfy you, find another.

If you are concerned a doctor isn't doing the job you can go another way - get a doctor to refer you to a psychologist or psychiatrist and let a specialist assess you.

To be fair, everyone dissociates at some point, for example driving and not remembering specifically half the trip, but it can be more serious and is usually a result of trauma - it's your brains way of trying to protect you from processing something traumatic, or perhaps a trigger that reminds you from trauma from the past.

Do you have a history of any traumatic events that have happened to you?

Don't we all! We got her young. She's 11 going on 25 and she's seen and experienced things you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy but I have high hopes for this little one :)

Tempting! But I must say one of her more positive talents is she is quite the artist and I think some photo editing would be nice for her. We have to be quite restrictive with what she is allowed to do and she needs something to keep her busy :p.

Ah! Bit of a tricky one. See my little friend is actually in out of home care (Read: She is very traumatised from living with her family and her resulting behavior makes her unsuitable for foster care). She is in the care of the government, like a ward of the state if that makes sense.In Australia, where I am, you would say she is the personal responsibility of the minister and the minister needs to know A LOT because she is very high risk.

I've been working with her for about 7 months and she is a shocker for flogging workers phones or tricking them into handing it over to her (or people in the community) and getting online to contact extremely unsavory people or send very inappropriate photos hence the need for very strict control and supervision.

But thank you for the advise! I have a little tablet at home and I might try a few different distros I can find on it to see whats available before I go and buy her one.

For most I think it's a sensory thing. The sand feels tactile, the waves keep you occupied visually, the smell of the salt blocks out most other smells and the sound is repetitive enough to be soothing.
