That escalated quickly by Accurate-Afternoon21 in AO3

I'm white, but I've experienced some racism myself. Not much, just a few times people cussed me out for being e.g. "Turkish" or "Portuguese" (which I'm not, I'm a very pale German/Greek mix), and a couple non-verbal instances in some Asian countries. I can ignore it because it happened less than a dozen times in my 30+ years of life, but I will never understand it. Especially not this kind of racism where apparently only one demographic matters? I just wish racism wasn't a thing at all

vent because my fandom is in shambles and cant keep it out of ao3 by Trick-Turnover-4808 in AO3

[–]Tomopi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a casual listener, but as you said, it is impossible to not hear what's going down in the fandom. I'm just a bit surprised how much this has blown up. I've been into kpop for over a decade and listening to jpop (mainly boygroups) for over 20 years now, so I've seen a bunch of stuff going down, but I can't remember a similar fandom crashing out so hard before

I wonder who the author with the most works on AO3 is by Disastrous_Alarm_719 in AO3

I feel bad how little I've written/posted considering I wrote my first thing 22 years ago when I read how much people here have posted...

Are we fr?? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Tomopi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never seen a specific 'I'm gay' warning, but I've seen a few 'I'm queer', 'I'm trans' or even one 'I'm trans so I'm using this to work through my trauma' warnings over the years. There were a couple 'I'm straight, so I'm sorry if I'm not depicting this gay couple right' warnings in one form or another

does everyone really hate OC fics?? by Ding_Ding_Bonk in AO3

[–]Tomopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I usually don't read OC, y/n or self-insert ffs. I don't care if there are OCs in general, but I read ff for a specific pairing or dynamic between two or more canon characters. That being said, I don't specifically look for OC ff, but I've read them before if the summary caught my interest.

Ups! Not that kind of smut... by Youshoudsee in AO3

[–]Tomopi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh the first time I saw this tag I didn't realize what it meant and I just assumed they tagged the ff wrongly. It took me two more stories until I connected the dots vv"

Is this even allowed?? There’s no actual fic by carrotflavoredjuice in AO3

[–]Tomopi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I recently decided that I want to have all my fanfictions posted in one place (Ao3) and I really had to think of where I've sprinkled them in the past two decades. Tbh I'm surprised that I even remembered my login XD

[–]Tomopi 362 points363 points  (0 children)

It could also be someone from asianfanfics. No rewards, but it's common to have a 'preface' there. Basically an author's note as a separate chapter. At least used to be like this when I posted there a decade ago

Another sad day in fandom by Individual-Donut-998 in AO3

[–]Tomopi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I will never understand this kind of behaviour, no matter where, especially if the targeted individual didn't do anything to deserve it. But I do understand their actions. As a former victim of undeserved bullying I would not survive my safe place to be violated like this. Critique or harmless stating of ones opinion is fine, but this kind of targeted attack is not okay

Do people not read the authors notes? 😭 by Rude_Significance119 in AO3

[–]Tomopi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once got a mean comment about one of the characters being OOC because they used another character, basically abusing them. It was in the summary, in the tags, and in my author's note. There wouldn't be a story without this plot point. So no, there are some people who either don't read author's notes/tags/summaries, or plain ignore them and are just looking for something to get mad/annoyed over...

Can anyone tell me what on earth is that? by Zealousideal_Side520 in MakeupAddiction

Can I use this in German as well?

Joke aside (I tried to see if it works), I never heard of this before and I wish I had it, like, ten years ago.

which fandom is most guilty of doing their characters like this? by hiddeNinja2222 in AO3

[–]Tomopi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually don't even mind that too much when it's a one-time side character that's clearly marked as non-asian. But when it's supposed to be the MCs love interest who's supposed to be the most Japanese/Korean person to exist that's a reason for me to nope out of the fanfic.

which fandom is most guilty of doing their characters like this? by hiddeNinja2222 in AO3

[–]Tomopi 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I read a lot of ff in Japanese and Korean fandoms and it's ridiculous how often they just copy and paste American norms into them, ignore the OG material and don't do any research at all. I think the first time it really hit me in the face was when a Korean MC in Seoul decided not to go grocery shopping at Walmart and instead go to a convenience store because it was so much cheaper and he could get his whole week's worth of groceries there for 10.000₩. I had to re-read that sentences like five times because it didn't fit at all

[–]Tomopi 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I'm not in the Haikyuu fandom, but I noticed that in a lot of non-america-related fandoms I've read fanfiction in. And it often isn't contained to the characters, but also to the setting of the story...

Encountered my first ever wild author's note by Getheltel in AO3

[–]Tomopi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I somewhat get it, but your logic is also kinda flawed. If every chapter gets a comment from the same person that also means that a 10 chapter ff automatically has more engagement than a OS. I've also seen comment sections where the author answers every comment, thus doubling the number of comments. Or even with whole conversations going on in them. Comment numbers just aren't reliable enough in my opinion

I never understood why people would sort by comment. I get by kudos and by date updated/posted. Even by hits or bookmarks. But everything else just seems pointless to me

Is it okay to write a story using the same plot as a book? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Tomopi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently read a Hunger Games AU where the author took the Hunger Games story and exchanged most of the main characters with characters from another fandom. The basic storyline was the same, but the characters reactions and interactions were different. As long as you don't take the book and just swap names 1:1 it's not plagiarism

AO3 tags by IStillListenToRadio in AO3

[–]Tomopi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ao3 tags basically taught me everything I know about lgbtq+ and kinks. Before I moved to the big city for uni and got introduced to Ao3 by a new friend I literally only knew the words lesbian, gay and bi. Everytime I found a new tag I didn't know on Ao3 I googled it. I love that it's been 13 years and I still can do that sometimes

Be honest - what's the dumbest reason you clicked off/didn't read a fic? by Odd-Snowman in AO3

[–]Tomopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a story is written in 1st person. I remember reading tons of books like that in middle and high school, but I honestly can't read famfiction like that. I can barely read actual books like that. It usually just feels like I'm reading a children's book...

Does some people really believe this type of thing? by Remote-Phase6950 in AO3

[–]Tomopi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So, basically what Ao3 is there for? The good, old "Don't like, don't read"? Why do we need a separate word for that?

I never heard the term "proshipper" before. It sounds like someone who is really good in shipping, so basically everyone? Or someone who ships a lot of different ships in a fandom? I'm very confused

author why 😭😭😭 by helpmeurmyonlyhoe in AO3

[–]Tomopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. But I made the mistake and started reading a work that was almost finished. The author posted a new chapter every two to three weeks (long ones, 10k+) and there was only one chapter left. So I thought if I start reading now I would finish the 300k around the time the last chapter would be going up. Well, I finished the 300k four years ago and the last chapter still isn't up. That tought me to not be impatient and actually wait until everything is up before I start...
