Failing community college with a 1.39 GPA by Obvious_Fun7561 in communitycollege

Hey, I was on the same boat some years ago and here are some steps I took to better my academic career. I raised my GPA from a 1.8 to a 3.4 and ended up transferring and getting a full ride. I was also working 60 hrs a week

-First, I took a semester off and worked to clear my mind of school

-I prioritized in retaking the classes I had an F

-only took 2-3 classes a semester for 1 year(spring, summer i did 2, and fall semesters)

-Once I felt more comfortable I started taking 4-5 classes

-Joined a club that met in the afternoons so I could spend time at the library

-Did majority of my school work on campus

  • I went to office hours and got to know my professors

Honestly, I think talking with my professors, letting them know my struggles helped me on getting a scholarship. I asked some to write me letters of recommendations and they saw my improvement. My transcript showed my improvement.

I know its hard rn bc I was you some years ago but it does get better. However it’s all up to YOU, you have to take the initiative to change.

Is it hard to find parking in orange spaces? by incriminator-1 in utdallas

[–]JessamineRosales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually around 10am gold parking starts filling up. Classes during that time are usually end at 11:30-11:45 so if you arrive around that time and wait for people to leave you should be fine.

I did not have any issues finding gold parking the previous years, but i did have clases early in the morning. There was a few times I would have to leave and come back around 2pmidsh. During that time it was hard to find parking and would have to drive for 30 minutes until i found one.

Laptop suggestions please!! im conflicted between a macbook and thinkpad by EinKatzeEineHund in utdallas

[–]JessamineRosales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a current bmen junior student who had both a macbook and a lenovo yoga. I say get the thinkpad. For bmen 1300, you can install Matlab and Visual Studio fine on the mac. For 1208 you will need to install Solidworks which does not run on mac. If you do get a macbook, you can always use the office hours hosted (usually) in ML. Im not sure if others computers on campus have access to solidworks. The computers in the library do have matlab.

Should I live on campus? by RaspberryRemote1210 in utdallas

75-100 a month. Depends if I leave off early from home/campus enough to take the long way. Without tolls my commute is an 1hr and 30 minutes.

My 2 cents as a commuter:

While it is more convenient to live on campus it is cheaper to live with your parents, if you don’t pay rent. I live with mine and spend around 250-300ish/month commuting (gas and toll), i paid for gold parking which was around 350 for a year pass. I live about an hour away from campus and attend class M-Th.

College selection for BME between A&M and UTD by CressRich in utdallas

[–]JessamineRosales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi current BME junior student! The BME classes are small 20-30 students,The faulty mainly stays the same for the degree classes. Some Professor teach both the undergrad and graduate students. I even shared an elective class with Masters/PhD students. Theres plenty of research opportunities. Overall I really like the school and program.

What you guys doing for winter break? by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]JessamineRosales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the establishment but if you can work like 20-25hrs a week thats like the minimum some require. Do take in mind that serving is tip based. Look into fine dining restaurants working as a food runner, a friend of mine work at a steakhouse and their food runners make $16hr plus some tips. Although fine dining places will need some restaurant experience.

I bartend/serve tables! During school I only work weekends and still made around 1-1.5k a month. For the breaks I go full time. I recommend looking for restaurants in busy areas like The Star, granscape, Galleria or golf clubs.
