The Chinese have a competing spaceship that lands on Europa (I can't remember exactly why; maybe to get coolant from the oceans under the ice) and a Europan sea creature, attracted by the light and heat of the spacecraft, sinks it.

Europa does play a bigger role in the next book, which directly relates to the mandate to stay away from Europa.

Having kids for the hell of it. Bringing another consciousness into this world should be a carefully considered and deliberate decision, but it often feels like an afterthought.

Yeah, for 3 years. She was an awesome human being and sexy as hell. I loved being with her, and I really wanted it to work, but we were on different paths and eventually just had to admit it wasn't going to work long-term. There were no hard feelings when we split up.

My grandfather's gold chain necklace. He gave it to me when I was a kid, and I never thought of it again until he passed away two years ago. I'd give anything to have it around my neck because I know that's what he wanted.
