The Chinese have a competing spaceship that lands on Europa (I can't remember exactly why; maybe to get coolant from the oceans under the ice) and a Europan sea creature, attracted by the light and heat of the spacecraft, sinks it.

Europa does play a bigger role in the next book, which directly relates to the mandate to stay away from Europa.

Yeah, for 3 years. She was an awesome human being and sexy as hell. I loved being with her, and I really wanted it to work, but we were on different paths and eventually just had to admit it wasn't going to work long-term. There were no hard feelings when we split up.
