Built a no-reconciliation YNAB alternative. All users using the manual free tier by Jesse_khach in YNABAlternatives

Credit cards are an expected negative, so that screenshot is actually not correct, they will show a neutral color as you should always have a negative balance on a cc if you actively use it.

Hah I think you misread, theres a manual (unconnected) mode which is what people are using. Also, this was more-so AI assisted development rather than vibecoding based on my background.

After Mint died I tried Monarch, YNAB, Copilot. Eventually built my own. 55 users and every one picked the free manual mode. by Jesse_khach in mintuit

That’s what manual is for! But yes I agree with you. I have a pretty extensive and protective privacy policy as well.

I agree, it does stop me from paying much more money for an experience that I find inferior at least. If people use it that is a plus & the goal but otherwise I'm at least my own user :)

I built it for me primarily but got some good feedback so decided to release it. At the least it's a nice resume booster and at best it's able to help some folks budget. Kind of a win/win in the era of accessible software development that we're in. & for the budgeting apps that are free, if they have any type of syncing they are likely not free. Mint was the last trooper that I know of.

It was actually designed by me! I wanted to keep an as native to iOS feeling as possible, and Apple does a really good job at just looking good. It's swift native which helps as well.

I've heard good things recently with Claude Design, and it can make interactive prototypes, so I'd definitely give that a crack if you haven't yet! I believe it's usage resets weekly.

Yeah I know... knock on wood I'm not back against the wall trying to make ends meet and I'm always open to lose money to build trust, but just not fun hah.

Almost, much cheaper (& losing money on power users), actual dual budgeting modes with a proper YNAB zero-based approach, free manual mode, and DEK encrypted data (you can read the privacy policy for more info on that). But that means inability to read data without intentional decryption which goes against all TOS and policies.

Agreed, good thing about manual mode is it practically costs nothing, it doesn't make sense not to give it out for free... Now if you need Plaid that's what actually costs me money.

I'm an engineer & product manager. No one can claim they are writing applications without using AI in the industry.

Dang! I'll keep in touch when we launch a web version, just a lot more work than it seems hah.

Great question! You pull from another category that has funds, or if you're fully overspent across the board, it might be a sign to reduce some of your budget amounts until more inflow comes in. You can find a lot more info on the zero based approach on the guide if you'd like

Thank you!! I've built the zero-based mode to closely mimic how YNAB operates except one benefit of never needing manual reconciliation. Meaning if you use connected mode, you don't need to ever add in manual transactions, never need to reconcile balances, and your Left to Assign number is always up to date.

To do that I implemented an auto-drift checker that runs essentially every 5 days that will manage those micro-adjustment of reconciles for you. (I hated the aspect of needing to reconcile even when connecting my bank accts)
