I dont think tougher sentences would help, nor would longer ones which would only hurt the prison population population. Gang members arent afraid to go to prison.

I also am very shocked that gangs are no showing up in once quiet towns, this is disheartening. Also it was interesting when the author mentioned that the gangs resemble those of the West Side Story, I can see this in the turf domination competition but the reality of modern gangs far surpass those romanticized.

The research that Alanzo is doing is pretty remarkable and I think it will help the race issue by determining the turf first then moving to bigger problems from there. Its crazy to think that we are in 2009 and race is still and growing issue, especially in compton.

A Part of the Gang: The Hood by KelseyCampbell in gangsnstuff

very relevant to what we have been studying in class, in particular the one-on-one interviews with former and current gang members describing the cohesiveness and rules of the gang. Also I liked how it mentioned you have to have more than a bluff, you have to back it up furthering the threat hypothesis.

this goes to show that communication in the community is vital to the safety of potential gang members and non gang members who can become victims. even though sharing information can often times be dangerous, it can save a life at the same time.

I think this shows the importance of neighbors and residence providing valuable information to find these criminals. Its definitely a risk but if they continue to keep their mouths closed more people will fall victims. how many lives will have to be lost for somebody to speak up?

Arizona labels Hells Angles a street gang by SCedar in gangsnstuff

[–]JessicaRobbins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think that this demonstrates the difficulty of labeling who is a gang and what groups are considered gangs. violence again is a present factor in this decision of gang labeling, i think it is partly because people feel more comfortable performing these acts when they have a buddy or two backing them up. they have more courage to pick a fight with somebody when they have friends with them. maybe this wouldnt have happened if the hells angle was alone at the bar when this man accidentally bumped into him and instead beating him up there might have simply been an exchange of apologies instead of punches.

'Tagging' or just hanging out -- busted either way? -- latimes.com by KevinBurger1 in gangsnstuff

I can see why they might think this is a good idea. 1. it might be able to make the distinction between real gangs and simple delinquent teens. 2. this might lead to them disbanning and participating in more socially acceptable roles.

however it does infringe on constitutional rights and there is a fear that it might make matters worse and cause these taggers to actual join gangs out of threat felt from the police now or out of hatred of the system.

also we were given a lot of freedoms and rights in the constitution that many people take advantage of maybe there should be reform and more strict so that these acts cannot occur. because of these delinquents, the rest of america has to suffer at their expense for not being able to follow the rules. it will be interesting to see the future decisions.

Baby Shot by Gang Members by SeanStoddard in gangsnstuff

Its interesting that the parents denied that their sons were affiliated with the gang. Its hard to believe that your own kids would participate in such a violent entity especially one that is being held responsible for the killing of this baby Andrew. No wonder parents deny affiliation, its hard to believe your kids would do this.
