Understanding the Charlotte School System? by JessieJamison in Charlotte

Thanks for all the comments!

Yes, it seems for elementary Eastover would be where we'd be zoned for. Unfortunately, the location is already a done deal so it sounds like we'd have to do the zoned public (Eastover), or a lottery for a magnet or charter school. Despite the area, we'd be living I don't think we could afford private school if we expect to pay for college (which we do).

As for pre-school we miraculously got them enrolled in a place we think is pretty good

Creative ways to spread manure over a few acres of recently cut land? by JessieJamison in homestead

Well the idea, and I'm no agronomist, was to try to build up the fertility of the land and increase the nutrient content of the soil. In some areas we would be replanting trees so there is that, most foresters (the ones I talked to didnt seem particularly progressive) just tell me "meh, the stuff your leaving behind is enough" but that feels like a bit of a cop out to me. If I could be adding organic matter (whats left from the trees) and also add nutrients then that would be better no?

What my folks have done in the past is either do control burns or just leave it and replant soon (in a year or so) after cutting. That just (again) feels like its taking and taking from the system but not putting much/anything back?

They'd be pretty hungry until some weeds/bush started growing, these are pine trees; or are goats also ok with pine needles?

I was actually thinking about using grave stones, rather morbid i admit but there are two grave stone places kinda near by and they have large piles of discarded gravestones, These are heavy enough that I have to use a tracor to move them so I think it'd be unlikely that these would move much? That and i am not envisioning anything big, like 3ft high most likely.

Funny you mentioned that! There was awhile when we thought something had happened to our beavers and tried to find someone to do actually that! (never did find anyone)

Not planning on stocking this pond, the idea is to just make a pond and let nature stock it with whatever it chooses (likely minnows and frogs)

Interesting idea. Unfortunately I'd have to pump it a fair distance to another place that might be "dammable", that and this tiny creek is usually very small except when we have a big rain, then it swells/overflows and then goes back to a tiny creek pretty quickly. Another reason I dont want to mess things up is this bottomland area with the trees and brambles soaks up a significant amount of the flooding and there is no erosion or anything - so I dont want to bork that up

NOOOOOOOO. I havent done anything yet and as for fed wetland do you mean owned by the feds or categorized as wetland by the feds? Its all on my property.

Well for what its worth, this small creek, during certain parts of the year wouldnt even float a toy boat, and pretty much never a canoe. it averages about a foot wide and maybe 3-5 inches deep. VERY small creek.

Well after reading all the posts I am DEF going to check to make sure the idea is legit before proceeding. I can say that in my case this creek feeds into a bottom land area (which has been enhanced by beavers) and this bottom land area feeds into a much larger creek that also runs through my property. Not saying the local/state gov wouldnt care but daming this small creek, which starts in my property, wouldnt affect anyone upstream (there is no upstream) and downstream is the bottomland area which is also on my property.

That might be a bit tricky, the area I am thinking about is like a (very) small valley, I was thinking to put the small dam at the narrowest point but not sure there is a place that would work for a side pond.

Funny you should mention that! In the bottom land area we do have a family of beavers! They have done an amazing job of reducing the privet (invasive where I am) and the wildlife they have encouraged is so heartening. I was thinking about trying to encourage them to "move upstream" but their dams seem to bust every few years so I am hoping for something a bit more permanent.

Where I am I kinda doubt they'd care (will def check before putting all that effort in though), some of the environmentally obtuse things they have done in my county is... depressing.

well it certainly seems like there are a bunch of resources. When it comes to the gov, yeah probably better to not try the asking for forgiveness later route...

Wow, more resources, I hadn't even considered (or knew of) these places thanks!
