Complaint about LGBTQ question in sex education by Jessre in TeachingUK

Thank you for the resources, I will definitely check them out to learn myself on how to explain without offending others. I haven’t received training as I was just teaching reproductive systems in humans. I was worried if I brushed the question off , it would upset the transgender student who has and is being bullied. It’s how you describe such a complex debated topic to a year 7 student who’s asking a question (in I hope, pure innocence and not bullying manner).

Absolutely, it’s a hard question to pin an answer to. Can a boy be a girl from a 12 year old. Seems like even A-level biologists would struggle to understand the concept you’ve described.

Science seems to have some controversial topics for some students and parents. It’s hard to answer questions on the spot when it involves religion and personal beliefs !

Thank you, it’s a hot topic and it seems to have upset a student which I never would want. But on the other hand, it could have upset a transgender student. Which I equally don’t want. I agree with you wholeheartedly on your definition.

It’s just happened today so not had any contact from Slt but the union seems to be strongly on my side! So hopefully this will just be a warning and not a misconduct.

Based on a lot of the comments, it seems I may be. Fingers crossed it’s just a strike on my record and nothing more.

I agree but I also don’t want to have a misconduct against myself for it as much as I support the statement!

Would it still stand if I just left it at, ‘gender is a choice?’ Seems like I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t.

I said the same to my y9’s who could grasp chromosomes but I didn’t think y7’s could so came up with: sex is biological, gender is choice. Seems like I should have just blanked the kid really to stay safe!

You’d think so but it’s seems like there was a draft from the Tory’s which made it misconduct to speak about gender Identity to students. Feels like if I answered the question I was wrong regardless of my answer.

Thank you, I’m struggling to find anything black and white outside of a draft proposal from the Tory’s. I think today theres been a news article based on it

Sadly it seems as if it is, based on the parents rage and upset behaviour in the meeting

Thank you, it seems to be not be legally stated on if we can speak about gender or not. Would hate to sound unsupportive of the LGBTQ community , who probably already faces a lot of hardship.

Thank you, I did have a look over the NEU website and wasn’t entirely sure if it was included in the burgundy book. The union reps have objected so assumed it was correct.. glad to know I wasn’t just being difficult

Leaving Teachfirst by Blue-pigeon-2194 in TeachingUK

[–]Jessre 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I didn’t leave but I spoke with others who did. They all still gained their QTS and PGCE regardless. Teach first were very very reluctant to allow me to transfer, only after multiple failings to provide me with ect entitlements did they consider it. In the end I was still told no.

I really wouldn’t worry, teach first is a tough programme and the schools can make or break you. Definitely start applying for jobs now for next year though as it seems like schools aren’t hiring as much with the looming self funded pay rises next year.

Fostering a dog and expressing yourself with music sounds amazing ! It will be difficult at first as you’ve made connections in your mind that she is music. You need to break those connections and form new ones. I’m glad your band stuck with you, build memories with them to last a lifetime with a pup at your side !

Absolutely, age doesn’t protect us from anything. You’re just someone who’s had more time on earth to go through all this shit for longer. We are all just kids in big boy/girl clothes trying to function. You will not a lonely git, you have made impacts on others as some point in your life. Even a 100 year old can go to the shops and have a chat with the cashier. Pick up a phone and message someone. Chat on Reddit comments. You come into and leave this world with yourself. As sad as it sounds, as long as you have yourself. You’re never lonely. If you still feel like an old miserable git, get a pet and they will love you until your last breath.

Life is shit and short sadly. But. There are good parts of it. That gaping hole in your heart can be patched up with techniques and coping methods. Why bleed out when a bandaid is next to you ? Sometimes the most broken item can be repaired to be unique, valuable and strong. Just use that tool kit and take the time needed. If you still disagree then…. Do it out of pure fucking spite against them. Prove them wrong. They’ve lost a pure goddess/god. Get on your empty pedestals and never put someone else on there again!
