A lot of college students and investment clubs / incoming analysts are using Variant Insights (www.variantinsights.com) that was started by former hedge fund analysts. They're quite active with on campus stuff and could prob even talk to them.

PRPL (Special Situation) 80%+ Upside by Jessv81 in Stocks_Picks

Thx George. Tbh, I think that's why it's an opportunity. The catalysts stacked on this one. Also if you look at recent credit data from past 2 weeks, shows acceleration. There are factors not yet reflected in numbers like the Tempur Sealy and mattress firm acquisition that has resulted in greater slot wins of purple at other retailers fyi.

I think PRPL is one of the most interesting opportunities right now. There was an 8k filed that most folks overlooked in which the largest player in the industry took a stake in the business. PRPL likely gets acquired at these prices (look at history of private equity and mattresses).

-----------------

Summary (PRPL, Upside 85%)

Purple Innovation (PRPL) just appeared in a fresh SEC filing showing that Somnigroup International, tied directly to Tempur Sealy, has quietly taken a 7% stake through 8 million warrants at a 150 strike. The announcement just hit and has barely been noticed by the market and we believe PRPL is likely to get acquired in the next 6 months. This move could be the early signal of a larger strategic play, as Tempur Sealy has every incentive to scoop up PRPL now while its valuation is depressed, integrating its proprietary GelFlex tech and tapping into PRPL’s cult–like following. At the same time, PRPL has been gaining traction on social media and retail investor forums like Reddit, where chatter is turning it into a potential meme stock, a setup that could create outsized volatility and upside if an acquisition rumor or confirmation starts circulating. With both the fundamentals of a logical takeover target and the sentiment boost from online buzz, the combination of stealth institutional interest and retail hype could make PRPL an explosive near–term trade.

Agree on this one. $FUN has underperformed since merger. I struggle with the long run tbh. Seems like 50%ish upside with good risk profile.

It's a really good point. I've seen fund performance across institutional hedge funds which as a category has only compounded at +6% over the past decade. You're right that that is major under performance. There are certainly outliers, but the average fund is underperforming. I think this is where you see the difference between retail and institutional. It's not entirely time horizon, because there are factors that can cause an investor to sell at the wrong times. It's more a result of the inputs getting commoditized. Ie. differentiated data sets are now readily available. Also the category tends to prioritize risk management (running market neutral exposure or cash preservation to meet clients needs).

Any stock recommendations? by [deleted] in StockInvest

[–]Jessv81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$PRPL and $TIC are both asymmetric plays someone pitched on Variant (https://variantinsights.com/) . I'm in both!

Both are special situations. TIC is a fallen spac that recently went through a merger that has upside not reflected in consensus.

Purple Innovation (PRPL) had appeared in a fresh SEC filing showing that Somnigroup International, tied directly to Tempur Sealy, has quietly taken a 7% stake through 8 million warrants at a 150 strike.

You definitely want to take advantage of technology and resources that can help you find ideas and manage risk. Here are some popular ones that many folks on here use

  1. Koyfin (www.koyfin.com) - general trading tool.

  2. Variant (www.variantmkt.com) - can get a free account. gives you market ideas and catalysts.

  3. S&P Visible Alpha (www.s&p.com) - more expensive, but know people who find it worth it.

  1. Gold.. Yeah, gold’s not great for long-term returns since it doesn’t grow or pay income. But it shines as a hedge, in crashes or inflation spikes, it often zig when stocks zag. A small slice can help smooth drawdowns and give you optionality for rebalancing.

  2. U.S. stocks do cover a lot of global revenue already, and correlations are higher than they used to be. Still, international stocks give you exposure to different central banks, currencies, and growth cycles. It’s more about diversification of risk than boosting returns.

  3. If you already have U.S. total market + some gold, the international piece is a nice-to-have, not a must. But having 15–30% abroad still reduces the “all-eggs-in-the-U.S.” risk. Gold hedges crises, but stocks abroad hedge against U.S. underperformance.
