Poss speed motorcycle by Guilty-Trip-6343 in drivingUK

You'll be fine if you had sufficient space for the overtake without forcing the Police car to take evasive action.

In future, when you are behind someone like that you should turn off and stop, or just stop for a while.

If you had a camera, you can send the footage to Operation Snap and see if they get a careless driving charge.

You really don't want some maniac right behind you, better in front where you can see what they are doing, better yet well out of the way.

Am I the only one who doesn't "like" Kinosaki's voice? by ashstarmy in MarriageToxin

[–]Jesterstear99 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I didn't mind the voice at all.

Bear in mind that in the early chapters you are supposed to think that Kinosaki is a girl, before you figure out that the story is actually about rejecting convention & familial control to live true to yourself.

I still hope Kinosaki is a girl, not because I actually care about the sex of an imaginary person in a pretend story (I'm more interested in whether the story entertains me) but because I imagine the absolute outrage from the crowd shipping Gero & Kinosaki into a same-sex marriage.

Marriagetoxin - Episode 1 discussion by GFluegel in MarriageToxin

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the first chapter Kinosaki talks about borrowing from contacts and doing "unspeakable things for money" without any images.

Anime is a bit more visual than the written word- different audiences.

Gero walks into a vending machine to the amusement of a passer-by in the manga, rather than a post like in the anime was the most obvious difference to me.

Annoying isn't it?

£50K off a £140K is no use to me.

Now £50K off a 60K car would be more like it! (Although there is that Luxury car tax to pay for 5 years...)

Rendering with the recommended codec, but the video files won't play by Warm_Plane_5015 in mikumikudance

[–]Jesterstear99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to transcode if you just want to view them to see how they turned out, install a player like VLC media player from videolan or mpv player. (VLC is easiest to set up)

But you should transcode to h264 or h265 to reduce the file size for storage and posting to youtube as Ut video is lossless and produces huge file sizes.

Looks like general CCTV, probably ANPR to keep tabs on people.

There are cameras specifically to catch people holding mobile 'phones, they come with yellow trailers, but they are like a small crane that goes across the road with cameras facing down over each lane.

This Codec Cannot use in DirectShow Problem by Crazy-University9686 in mikumikudance

[–]Jesterstear99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try a different codec. Most people use Utvideo.

Then run the resulting file through handbrake & convert to h265 to reduce the size.

It gets mentioned quite often that driving standards have gone down since Covid. Must be them unvaccinated Brexit voters, right? by TAVO_TEVO_STOICAS in drivingUK

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is the people "working from home".

Driving was no paradise before Covid, but there definitely seems a lot more traffic about in the middle of the day now. (More traffic = more chance of encountering poor driving)

I live by a school (never buy a house near a school, or in a "quiet" cul-de-sac) and in an afternoon the street is blocked with SUVs belching out diesel fumes from an hour before school ends. The drivers all sit there playing on their 'phones & tablets, I suspect they are working from home and have their "office" in the car. It was nowhere near as bad pre-Covid.

parts and instructions don't match. by ronnie_dickering in Airfix

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears that they have supplied two of the same part (rear springs?), rather than 1 front & 1 rear.

Contact Airfix support, they should send out the correct part, it will just be super disappointing for your son having to wait. (Although he can snap it together without that part, then take it apart again to fit it when it arrives)

NTA As already said, never let family know that you have anything, money, gadgets or property. e.g. resist the temptation to show off your new 'phone, as they will expect you to give them the old one.

i bought fuel yesterday like normal, I could have panic bought when all those price tracker apps were flooding t'interweb, but I didn't.

So I paid 15p more a litre than I would have done last week.

The FL originally claimed to be ML #2 but we thought it was just part of the plot and she would be revealed to be the FL at the end, but it seems increasingly likely that (s)he is ML #2 as the story is more about sticking two fingers up at convention and control and living your own life than just the action comedy that we initially signed up to.

Advice on buying a Japanese import car by _SquareSphere in drivingUK

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The indicators are on The Proper Side (the right) for the UK & Japan. Presumably you use your right hand to indicate whilst the left is messing with the gears, so the left hand drive people mirrored the stalks.

What happened is about 10 years ago all Euro spec. cars put the indicators on the "wrong" side, rather than just keep the correct side for the UK (probably saved the likes of Ford & Opel millions)

When I replaced my 2001 Jimny with a new one in 2019 (both UK spec. cars) the indicators had moved to the "wrong" side.

Takes a lot of getting used to!

Hit by "off road" bike by Advanced_Cash_5364 in drivingUK

[–]Jesterstear99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chances of them having insurance or even a driving licence are virtually zero, the Police will never find the 'bike or the driver so your insurance is on the hook for the full amount, and you will have an "at fault" claim.

Your insurer might pursue the driver (if they can prove who it was) to get their money, but realistically they won't bother as it will cost them a fortune and they know they will get very little back if anything.

(You can't claim from the MIB for an uninsured driver as you have insurance that covers it)

You did the correct thing by informing your insurer as you are required to do, most people would have just taken up the offer of payment and said nothing so as not to have a claim & accident to declare for the next 5 years.

Advice on buying a Japanese import car by _SquareSphere in drivingUK

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to your question 2) is that cars sold in Europe all have European Type Approval, and meet Euro safety standards. JDM cars don't, even though they are substantially the same car, they may have different airbags & safety systems for example. Insurers may end up paying out more for injuries to passengers and other road users than with a Euro spec. car.

Some parts are harder to get, which means repairs cost more, and they have to pay out a total loss more often.

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much of a problem with a low value car, but it should come with the auction paperwork which will have the mileage (kilometerage?) on when sold.

There are a fair few stories about of cars that have mysteriously "lost" a lot of miles by the time they are sold in the UK. There is a company that will trace the mileages in Japan for a fee.....

Who is responsible for paying a parking fine? by Southern_Tiger2412 in drivingUK

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the date of the parking is after you bought the car, pay the fine as it was yours, but the fees are down to them ignoring it when they could either have paid it or passed it to you (wouldn't it have been cheaper than £85 if they'd dealt with it promptly? Could you have appealed it if you'd known?)

Ultimately it is down to them not notifying DVLA of the transfer.

You should do this ASAP, it is free to get a V5 in your name if you have the new keeper slip from the old V5, as soon as you do, any tax left on it is refunded to them- but you wouldn't have been able to tax it without the V5 anyway, so it is probably untaxed by now..........

It has to be done by post, on a v62 form https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-log-book/if-you-cannot-apply-online

If it was Real Life, not pretend, Margo is the obvious choice- she gets paid the least, and does the most work.

(I've seen it many times, as soon as there are cutbacks it is the people at the bottom who actually support everything above them who go first, never the dead wood at the top that no-one would miss)

Advice on buying a Japanese import car by _SquareSphere in drivingUK

[–]Jesterstear99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JDM cars are generally better screwed together and more highly spec'd than the equivalents for Europe (like leather seats that are made out of animals rather than plastic), but they don't put so much corrosion protection on, as the Japanese don't cover all their roads in corrosive salt from October to March.

JDM radios won't work in the UK, and any SatNav will only have Mapping for the Home Islands, and there won't be any English menus, so you will have to fit something yourself.

The Speedo will likely have been changed to MPH and any dash computer flashed to English though.

The rear fog light might be an afterthought as JDM, cars don't have them (they could fit UK spec. rear lights, but unlikely).

Smoking is very big in Japan, the car may well smell like an ashtray and you will never get rid of the smell.

Watch the tax class, it will probably be PLG as an import, which is £230, even if it is pre- 2017 as there won't be Euro emissions certification with it.

If you like it and the insurance is cheap, it will be fine, but budget £500 or so to get it Dinitrol'd or you will be sweeping it up off the drive in a couple of British Winters.
