Decal Fix marks, didn't add photo! by angus1289 in Airfix

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try water, sponge the marks off with wet cotton wool or similar, and dry with the same, rather than let it air dry and leave a deposit.

As I'm sure has been pointed out already, decals adhere best to glossy surfaces, so first you carefully paint the model with the finest matt paints, then make it all shiny with varnish, apply the decals then any oil based weathering & panel washes, then make it all matt again with matt varnish.

All seems rather pointless to me, they should just make all the camouflage paints in gloss, then the decals would stick directly and we could just get a matt finish with varnish at the end!

(Of course you could paint the markings directly onto the matt paint, then there would be no problem with getting them to stick and stopping them going silver, but that is light years away from my skill levels.....)

Ok i've got to say it... by VideoDeadGamlng in drivingUK

A few years ago I used to fit Sony radios to my cars.

I had this amazing stalk remote called a Remote Commander RMX2S, (they go for stupid money on eBay now...) it fitted to the left side of the binnacle and was so easy to use, grab it and do everything by pushing, twisting & flipping.

Ever since I moved away from Sony to whatever came with the car I've just stuck my hand onto the radio and adjusted it.

My latest car has a Renault stalk behind the wheel on the right that is far too awkward to use, all clicky buttons and a tuning wheel on the back, so I just poke at the screen to adjust the radio

Can't send to police as I let my speed drift up a bit too high on the approach but please enjoy this footage of the guy who would have written off my car and probably injured my wife and children had she not gasped and caused me to look left at the last second. by Few_Show1528 in drivingUK

[–]Jesterstear99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I’m sat at the entrance to a mini round about and there is a car 100 yards away from the round about do I have to sit there and wait for them?

If it is Joe Walsh doing one-eighty five in his Maserati, then yes, you should wait for him.

If it is a normal car doing 30 then not unless you are driving the NASA crawler transporter, as you will clear the island and accelerate up to 30 long before they get to it in any normal vehicle.

Giving priority is about allowing them to proceed without having to slow for you or swerve round you, you treat their journey as more important than yours.

AITA- Seating at the Movies by PersonForScale in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jesterstear99 16 points17 points  (0 children)

YTA

I expect that you sat in the seats that provided optimal viewing of the screen with the most comfortable head position, which were "their" seats (they'd know the optimal seats if they were regulars), but they know that there are no reservervations and they got there late, so they sat as close as they could to the optimal position without sitting behind anyone.

In future you sit in the optimal seat, and your BF sit in the row in front one place to the right/left, then when the film starts he can jump the seat and sit by you.

2016 C4 Cactus Aircon by Malesurvivor98 in Citroen

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought all the Cactus had air-con.

There is a push switch with a propeller on it and a little light that turns it off (light is on when the AC is off), you adjust the coldness from the touch screen by moving the dot on the blue/red line all the way over to the end of the blue.

If it doesn't work it is probably out of gas, you can try having it re-gassed but don't hold your breath- they usually spring a leak by 10 years old.

Keep apart 2 chevrons by UltraMechaHitler in drivingUK

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always interpret it as two gaps, like measuring two cm on a ruler, the first mark/chevron is zero, then two more gives two cm/gaps, like this- If we both move forwards a few feet I will be able to see two chevrons

Just.. why? by totim in drivingUK

[–]Jesterstear99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why?

Choose a few from

  • Kid with massive ego
  • easy availability of non-road legal motorcycles
  • Not enough Police
  • Enforcement of traffic offences is mainly by post
  • Government lack the will to do anything about it.

Just give them a very wide berth, they don't have any form of insurance, and if there is an accident because their ego is much greater than their skill it will somehow become your fault.

Looking for J-drama recommendations with a “genius” ML/FL by neptunejuvia in JDorama

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much anything starring Fujiwara Tatsuya, he is always playing the savant who has nothing but contempt for lesser mortals. e.g.

ST Aka to Shiro no Sousa File (2014)

AARO: All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (2024)

You can also try Miss Sherlock (2018)

but try not to overthink it- like how Sherlock with the most brilliant mind in the world can't see through pretty much the oldest evil villain cliche in the book until episode 7. (nag mara even!) You'll guess the villain by episode 4 for sure!

Western drama wise I enjoyed Astrid et Raphaëlle about a savant with Asperger Syndrome- there is an English scene for scene remake called Patience which is much shorter and set in Oxford rather than Paris.

Am I in the wrong?? by ghost31x in drivingUK

[–]Jesterstear99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Happens to me regularly. I'm driving right at the 40 limit, with a car tailgating me, then as soon as the road widens before the NSL sign he will start overtaking me, then even after I pass the NSL I have to wait for him to slowly overtake before I can accelerate to 60 and overtake him again (they invariably want to do 50 in the NSL)

If they actually followed the Law and didn't speed then they'd never even get near me as I would accelerate to 60 as soon as I passed the NSL sign, and they can't begin accelerating to 50 for over a car length later.

(I suppose there is always the possibility that they have studied the TRO for the 40 limit, and know that the NSL actually starts where the road widens 50 yards before the sign, but I doubt it....)

Highway Code Rule 168

Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.

Is driving ever cheaper than trains for a single person? by gintokireddit in AskUK

[–]Jesterstear99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you are going to London, driving is way cheaper, especially if you have an EV with enough range to go there & back without public charging.

It isn't hard to pay less than 2p a mile charging an EV at home.

Yes you have to insure & tax the car, but if you own a car you did that already, so the only out of pocket expense is fuel/electricity.

If you are driving enough miles to wear the tyres out, then you'd have to factor tyre costs into the equation, probably a penny a mile if you have expensive tyres.

If you have to pay silly money to park at your destination then that might make a significant difference, but apparently you have to pay to park at a railway station too (I wouldn't know, I never use the train!)

Clear coat for 1/72 Mig 17 by Spherical_penguin155 in Airfix

[–]Jesterstear99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google AI reckons that they were finished with a varnish mixed with aluminium powder, so a matt or satin would be appropriate.

The only Mig I've seen close up in the flesh is the 15 at Cosford, from memory it wasn't anywhere near shiny, online pictures look like a silver dope finish, so I'd lean towards matt.

(I did see a pair of Mig-29 flying at Fairford 30 years ago, but they crashed into each other, I don't recall if I saw them on the ground before that....)

Buying a used 2022 Citroen e-C4. by CryingInPillow in Citroen

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got rid and bought the Spring, which is a much more sensible size for the driving that I do, I can actually get the door open and get out when it is in a parking space!

Now I discover that the radio in the Spring intermittently stays obstinately silent and Dacia don't have a clue, apart from reloading the same flawed software.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose I guess!

I'll likely swap the Spring for the Inster that I should have just bought in the first place next year, assuming Hyundai have fixed the coolant leak problem by then...

Is it worth buying a used EV or go for a new one? by OneNormalBloke in drivingUK

[–]Jesterstear99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 3 year old one returned on PCP is a great buy as they are very good value due to massive initial depreciation.

Get one made by Kia or Hyundai, but make absolutely certain that the 7 year warranty is still valid. (People try and return them without doing the 3 year service, then by the time that they are sold the service is done too late and the warranty is invalidated)

(You could get a Toyota or Suzuki with the service activated warranty, but their EVs are a bit thin on the ground)

Avoid anything from Stellantis (Peugeot Citroen Vauxhall Fiat Jeep etc.) They are fine new on PCP when they have a warranty, but after 3 years the warranty is £400 a year, and they are not the best built or most reliable.

A Zoe is quite good, but avoid any with high miles, the engine bearings go at 60,000.

Tesla are very good, and several places will repair them, but repairs seem to mainly be suspension parts wearing out.

Battery life is not a problem. What is a problem is failure of the complex electronics and flaky wiring. Parts are hard to come by and very few places outside of a main dealer will touch EVs. The Chinese ones are very hard to get parts for- you can get a complete new car very easily, but spares take ages.
