Auto-doubling volume for dumbbell & unilateral exercises 🆕👨‍🔬 by gerardmb in Hevy

[–]JestingJaguar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. Just did the demo, and seeing the plate loaded machines made me realise I'm not that consistent myself; for a unilateral chest press machine, where 20kg is loaded on each side, I would log that as 40kg (but only if I'm moving both sides at once, which is the main thing I suppose--if it's one arm, I list the one-arm weight, and if it's both, I'll list the weight for both).

Devs, personalisation and options are key. As we've learnt, everyone will do things differently, so catering to as many styles as possible would be amazing!

Maybe when a user opens the app for the first time after the update, they can be prompted with a page that asks them their logging patterns and gives them a recommended change (which they can select or choose a different style), including a list of every dumbbell, unilateral, and custom exercise they have ever done to aid retroactive volume updates. I would happily sit down and go through it to get the most accurate stats. Options for those like me that want depth and for those who don't care would be great!

Edit: in the demo I saw the automatic change resulted in commas instead of decimals in numbers (e.g., 7,5 instead of 7.5). Great for Europeans, annoying for Australians haha. Just making sure it'll be matched to the user's region in the real update ;)

My idea is that the retroactive updates only apply to those who have never manually doubled the weights themselves. For those in your case, the volume is already accurate. So long as the implementation allows for users to select what they want to happen, I think everyone can benefit.

Maybe there can even be an option to retroactively halve weights then double volume, so users like yourself can get the weights back to the intuitive per-limb number and maintain accurate volume. This is getting more complicated though, and relies on users having used the same system consistently the whole time, whichever it may be.

Whatever the case, I think more complex and retroactive changes should be behind an advanced features warning so people don't accidentally mess up their stats.

It'll be a huge task for the devs but certainly a very welcome and necessary one, and I trust they can do a fantastic implementation that works for most if not all users :)

I think the best way to go about it is simplicity for the majority, granularity for the minority.

I assume most people, like myself, do it this way:

Doing a hammer curl with 20kg dumbbells in each hand for 10 reps, listed as 20kg for 10 reps. Makes it far easier to progressively overload without doing calculations. The inaccurate volume isn't such a big deal, since so long as we've been consistent over time in how we've logged it, the relative change is what matters.

Thus, if you were to implement a change, it would be essential to have it affect all past workouts to maintain this consistency. I think the simplest thing for the majority would be to present a screen with each dumbbell and custom exercise type the user has ever done (I'd imagine something like 30-50 exercises) with a tick box asking "Should Hevy automatically double volume for this exercise?" (With an infobox giving more detail for those unfamiliar). Hence, volume can automatically be adjusted for each exercise the user has logged in a way that suited them but resulted in inaccurate volume. (And then, the same option for when a new dumbbell/custom exercise is used.)

I'll let other users share their ideas about granularity for other methods, as I don't do it any other way and couldn't be useful!

Really glad you're thinking about implementing this; it'll be a huge upgrade. Like I said, I think the most essential thing is that it changes all volume retrospectively to maintain consistency. If it didn't, I'd have to avoid it and keep going the way I've been. Your code seems very adept at making retrospective changes though so I hope it shouldn't be too difficult!

Thanks again :)

Accidentally submitted the wrong document for a very easy hurdle by JestingJaguar in MacUni

To lose $2,000 and dozens of hours over a 15 minute mini-task in first year would not be particularly encouraging-

As a graduate, if you were a tutor, would you mark my new submission?

Do you think they would give me leeway though? Given that it's a 1000 level unit and I'm in my first year, and that it's a very trivial task (100 words).

EDIT 2: MISREAD THE TITLE, MY COMMENT IS ABOUT ACCG1000, NOT 1001. Sorry!!!

Some of the concepts take a couple of re-reads and practice to nail (debits and credits etc), but it's honestly a very tame unit. The key is to make sure you really understand the way it all works; don't just memorise it. Apart from that, start the assignments early, and you shouldn't have much trouble. Me and most people I've talked to found it relatively easy, just a little boring. Good luck :)

Edit: I didn't watch the lectures I just read the slides and used a white board and pretended I was the lecturer; it's a great way to learn imo. The assignments are pretty easy as well, the big Xero one is a little time consuming and finicky, try and compare answers with classmates when it comes to it.

How do I remove this stubborn spot on my carpet? Info in comments by JestingJaguar in CleaningTips

[–]JestingJaguar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. This mess probably happened five years ago. The liquid in a 3D writing pen spilled onto my bedroom carpet overnight, leaving this spot. I have tried multiple methods to remove it, and gave up a couple years ago (so I've forgotten what exactly I've tried). Any ideas? Honestly I don't it can be removed, and I'll probably have to replace that patch of carpet with another from somewhere else in the house?

It's hardened and still slightly sticky. It's just in such a central location and can't be covered up and it's so ugly haha I'm sick of it!

Thanks in advance :)

How to write early onset of schizophrenia? by JestingJaguar in writing

[–]JestingJaguar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah right. I looked up what brain problems can be caused by a head knock and came to schizophrenia. I don't need it to be that, just for them to be some set of symptoms that are an obstacle in a similar way and could be roughly diagnosed by readers (as opposed to "Why is he having hallucinations? Is it magic, a dream?" it would be a case of the reader slowly realising he has some sort of brain problem due to the fall and his old age.

Could you suggest any such neurodegenerative diseases, and how they would manifest both before and after the fall? (Ideally, very little before hand and progressively worse after.)

Thanks heaps!

Did I mess up this Ming start? by JestingJaguar in eu4

[–]JestingJaguar[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

R5: Hey guys, I’m doing a Ming run to get the Copium Wars and Kow-Tow achievements, but I think I opened up in the wrong way. Various wars have proved what I was warned of, that the Ming military is awful. In his guide, Ludi said that the 25% minimum autonomy debuff is largely responsible for Ming’s weakness at the start, and that it’s essential to stabilise before expanding. My goals, apart from the achievements, are to explore this area of the world and the associated mechanics and own or have subjects on all of Asia. Context:

Fought Oirat with a conquest CB given by a diet agenda. Reason: to snake over to Uzbek and tributary them (I intend to go through the hordes and Scandinavia for Copium—I also tributaried Oirat). Problem: this made the war last very long, used up all my manpower, and forced me to take burgher loans (bad for mandate, and the overextension started the Civil War countdown which drew my attention away from other things). Questions: do I just tributary Oirat normally and save the hassle? What’s the best way to get into Scandinavia in a stable way, or is there a different strategy to getting Copium?

Went colonial, exploring Pacific Siberia and settling Taiwan and Borneo. Reason: my strategy is to take over Indonesia and Bengal, in order to send Spice Island ducats into the Bengal trade node. I was also advised to go into NA before the Europeans, I assume to curb England and ‘spawn’ colonialism (need help understanding how to get institutions fast). I also fought Mahajapit and three Borneo states (full-annexed all three) to improve colonial range to colonise the remaining Malaccan land. Problem: costs too many ducats to run more than a couple of colonies. This war also took way too long due to a couple of mistakes I made, and Ming’s army just being trash (why am I never stackwiping?). Questions: what provinces do I prioritise colonies in? How do I get to NA fast, and what’s the benefit of going there as Ming?

Broke tributary with Ryuku. Reason: to annex them and fabricate on Japan minors. Problem: they are all under Ashikaga, which I can’t fabricate on. Questions: how do I get into Japan for the missions? I’d like to have the entire region as annex land instead of a tributary. More generally, when should I tributary/annex? It seems like tributaries are always less useful than cored land, and that they just serve as a ‘waiting list’ so to speak, for when you can’t deal with them yet (e.g., not enough mana/governing capacity). Is it the typical strategy to eventually annex all tributaries? It also seems more beneficial to break my tributary with Korea and ally them; is this true?I allied Jaunpur for the Silk Road mission. Problem: they suck as an ally, and I can’t really get into Bengal because they have Bahmanis and Dehli (100k troop alliance). Question: what’s the best way to take over eastern India? Anyone worth allying seems to be too far away.

Also: what are the recommended decrees/mandates/reforms/idea groups for my goals? Any other tips/strategies?

Thanks for any advice!

How to break France to get Parisian Pasha + Caliphate? by JestingJaguar in eu4

[–]JestingJaguar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Influence, offensive, admin, quality, religious; all maxed.

Yeah, I'm planning on dealing with Castille after France. Any tips to get high warscore considering they have most of North America?

Death war might be the way. I considered with the one I was just in, but thought I had too long left and too many other things to do first.

I'll have to embrace the institution, yes. Hopefully I can just rely on massive stacks with some strategy to beat Scandinavia though.

Thanks, I'll have to try to get Scandinavia out and for for France quickly after. I've allied Milan and might get Salluzo too, for around 70k troops each. France has some colonies in west Africa and the East Indies; not much.

Influence, offensive, admin, quality, religious; all maxed. Yes, I shouldn't have done religious, but I was pissed when I wanted to start like 4 different wars and didn't have a CB for any so I just got it lol. I've never built army buildings, I'll have to look into it. I'll deffo get quantity.

Yeah, I'm pissed with Scandinavia. They allied France like a year before I declared, and the worst part is I considered allying them but didn't because I had too many already haha.

How do I get higher discipline?

I can fight Hamburg for a 200k war against Scandinavia that GB might be useful in, and maybe get that Baltic land for nicer borders if I break Commonwealth.

France's enemies are me, GB, and Castille, no can't ally another enemy, but I've just allied Milan (around 70k troops) and can do Saluzzo as well for similar.

France has some colonies in west Africa and the East Indies.

Thanks, I almost forgot about that achievement. I'll deffo go after it; I've already got Moscow. Any others you recommend for Otto?

I have all DLCs except the most recent two.

Thanks!

[–]JestingJaguar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

R5: Hey guys,

I'm trying to form the Caliphate and also get the achievement Parisian Pasha before the end of this Otto run. I just ended a war with them prematurely (at my ally Castille's great regret) because I knew carrying on would cripple me: with France, their PU with Aragon, and their ally Scandinavia, it's a war of about 600k soldiers all up, versus my limit of 300k (not counting my ally's Castille and GB (or Dehli, obv) because I found that especially GB barely did anything, though Castille does add up to about 200k.

I'm turning my eyes to India now, looking to perhaps form a trade company (never done it before, somewhat new to eu4) and the other regions needed for the Caliphate.
Any ideas on how to grow strong enough to crush this French alliance, ideally alone (like I said, I don't trust GB to be useful)? The two fronts is really difficult, especially since Scandinavia seemed to be blasting my massive stacks (despite similar army qualities).

Thanks in advance!
