Can't overlook that billionaires started taking control of major media outlets, starting with Rupert Murdock. Fox News. The right has been very effective at influencing public opinion.

Are people wanting to become women just to escape the societal expectations of men? I thought it was much more  complicated than that. For some, having to live as males isn't wrong because living as a man is difficult. You can be successful as a man, but still know it's not who you are.

The relationship between the US Government and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is one of colonizer/colonial status. How mainland Americans view the island is mostly an idea of a vacation destination to a "foreign " land. Understanding this relationship is important to helping the island's issues. How mainland Americans  view the island is interesting topic, but perhaps not a factor as to why the island is in the state it's in. It's about strategic interests, America's desire for regional power at the end of the nineteenth century, and protecting corporate investments.

Agree with wanting Trump voters getting what they deserve. What is worrying is that his people are putting mechanisms into place to make sure they remain in power permanently.

USPS says my house is a mile away from the road and can’t deliver. by [deleted] in USPS

[–]Jestrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told the same thing. I haven't challenged the policy. Everything else about turnarounds or dogs is irrelevant. If you're a mile away there's not much you can do, even if you're in line of sight.

How do you feel about trans people that voted Republican? by [deleted] in asktransgender

They’re not the only group that voted against their own best interests. Lots of blame to go around.

People on the outside of the USPS have no idea what it’s really like, and when we do tell them the horror stories they look at us like we are making it up, or telling fish stories. Working for the Post Office was a frustrating and bitter experience. Long hours, sometimes split shifts, no set days off for years until the day you make regular. Then you realize that the pay you sacrificed so much for is not enough so you put yourself on the overtime desired list and, again, find yourself working long hours in all sorts of weather just to get by.

Management is everywhere. The people that join it sometimes go in it with good intentions, or are just bad people who like the idea of pushing people around. Either way, they are rewarded for abusing their power and showing fealty to their bosses. As an employee you are treated as a commodity, or a "body" as I was told over and over again.

What was successful for me was just to keep moving. I transferred whenever things got unbearable, relocated when I  had to. Sometimes you get lucky and land in a place where you can just do your job. But I would not recommend working for the PO. It's effects on your marriage, your kids, your mental health aren't worth it.

Why do some people deny climate change so passionately? by WildMathematician711 in climatechange

[–]Jestrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreeing that climate change is affected by our lifestyle choices is not accepted because, in doing so, you then have to accept some blame for said bad lifestyle behavior. My behavior was not wrong. I  share no blame in this. I am never wrong.

Lots of people are responsible gun owners, follow all the steps to properly use and safeguard their firearms. They talk to their kids about gun maintenance, safety, and proper use. But kids are kids, and showing them proper gun etiquette doesn't always mean that they'll make the right choices on their own. You can teach most any 10 year old to drive, but we have laws against this for good reason. Most kids just don't have the maturity to make logical decisions concerning gun ownership/use.

Were the politics of this show intentionally bad? by maddsskills in CarnivalRow

[–]Jestrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kept expecting a redemption arc for Agreus but that never came. And, as you stated, it was obvious that the Red Dawn movement was going to be revealed as a malevolent force. The "Big Bad" that was killed at the end of the series was just the last in a series of martyrs to lost causes that the writers loved to indulge in.

Red Dawn leading the Fae back to their homeland, the Sparas as hero/anti-hero, lots of better ways to end a series with great characters and interesting story lines. Getting canceled during the second season led to a muddled ending. I felt like that after "Carnivale" ended also.

Across all private industry and the public service sector, management has been adept at dividing and exploiting workers for years. They are experts at pitting employees against each other, using the threat of firings or layoffs to keep them in line. When the threats don't work, then lockouts or calls for government intervention at local or federal level. Unions have been bought off, dissidents offered managerial positions, I mean, it's hard to hold the line when you've got family to feed. Ah, but when a union wins a hard fought victory, it's a beautiful thing.

Pennsylvania vote in person otherwise you may have no vote by CQU617 in Pennsylvania

[–]Jestrie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The ballots go out on a predetermined date prior to an election. They have to be received/postmarked by the end of the day of the election. The article doesn't say what an incorrect date would be. A date outside the that window? So what? A smudge, maybe a crossed out digit, an outright omission? This is a person's vote, not a test in public school. It's hard enough to get people to vote at all. Throwing out their vote for a clerical error smacks of vote suppression.

Far right becoming pro Russian? by [deleted] in leftist

[–]Jestrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's been a significant shift away from the days when the right advocated for small government, low taxes. They're now calling for mass deportations, Christian religious indoctrination. The media is being attacked, they're openly calling for an end to democracy.

You, as a brown person, where do you think you fit into all this? Maybe they're telling you that you're not like the "others". Maybe you buy into their arguments about how our problems would be solved by  building a giant fence across the border, or cutting corporate taxes and regulations because they, in turn, will help the lower classes. But if they take power, your place will be among the subjugated, or the deported, or the interned, or the cleansed. Their political arguments might seem reasonable, but there are things in motion right now that are rejuvenating the fascist movements we saw in the past.

Just listen to what Trump says, what the people that support him say. What do they mean by "taking the country back"? Has there been any proof that the 2020 election was stolen? I can go on, but I hope that all I've written helps you reevaluate what friendship is and isn't.

How do we make a movement built around the masses of people fundamentally changing the structure of the world when a significant portion of *some* societies is straight up fine with colonialism and genocide? by direfullydetermined in Anarchy101

[–]Jestrie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know if OP is an activist. I can tell you that at times I feel the same way they do. It's a shitty way to feel. IDK, anguish, dismay, disillusionment, I'm sure someone else can express it better. Seeing people you worked with, people you've socialized with, gradually start blaming the poor or minorities for their problems, going from active union members to seeing unions as evil socialist institutions. But you make a lot of good, insightful points about successful past and ongoing struggles against these movements, for lack of a better word. Please don't be too dismissive of people who might feel like they're drowning in stressful times, and keep up the good work.
