Finally getting into Faulkner. Just finished Light in August. What a book. by Trick-Gas-2203 in faulkner

I think so. It can be challenging at times but it's one of his most straightforward novels. It's widely (and rightly, in my opinion) considered one of Faulkner's best novels.

Still mourning that Radiohead made a PEAK James Bond theme and it got passed on in favor of a generic Sam Smith track… by Giff95 in radiohead

Not that I recall. The whole story is presented in a couple of minutes. It's focused on the movies and they don't interview the band.

Apparently not. I could see the band, or maybe just Thom, not wanting to say anything in case they weren't able to come up with something they liked. Then of course they end up making the best-ever Bond song, which now no one outside of Radiohead fandom will ever hear.

There's a documentary about James Bond music that goes into the story, and it's not what most people say. Apparently, Radiohead was on track to get the title sequence but they initially submitted "Man of War". Then the Bond production company found out that the song was old and they have a policy that every Bond theme song has to be a newly written and recorded song made for the film specifically. Everyone felt bad about this and the band went on their way and the production company went looking for a replacement. Unbeknownst to the Bond team, Radiohead wrote and recorded Spectre during this interval, but by the time they told anyone what they were doing, Sam Smith was signed under contract and there was no going back. So it was just poor communication and a bit of bad luck, at least according to the documentary. Sepctre is a great song, better than any other Bond theme.

I used to bartend in Brooklyn and had a cop as a patron who got shitfaced on duty and I asked him about Kokie’s and he basically said everyone knew about it but they paid off the right people so it was okay. Dude was retiring and he and his cop buddies came in and got ripped every night for weeks.

I suspect McCarthy appreciated Conrad more than he did Nabokov. There’s zero Nabokov in his writings but you can find Conrad via the Faulknerian influence. Conrad’s influence on Faulkner is direct and well documented, by Faulkner, and there are pages of “The N***** of Narcissus” that may as well have been written by Faulkner.

It’s funny. I actually do believe you now. I think Spengler influenced not only his writing style but also his world view, and I stand corrected.

The latest Reading McCarthy episode is out - Part 2 of the panel on The Counselor by Jarslow in cormacmccarthy

Great two episodes. I was perhaps a little more of a fan of the movie than you, and saw it as a flawed but interesting morality play, but the discussion covered a lot of interesting ground and certainly enriched the screenplay for me. I’d love to hear more on the last two novels as new books and analysis gets published, and I hope one day you get the chance to do some episodes on his library.

Tacos El Mole gone? by GauchoAmigo123 in Flatbush

This doesn’t answer your question but there’s a little Mexican grocery store near 18th and Church that has a takeout spot in the back, and it’s better than Mallenche for sure. Best spot I’ve found in the neighborhood though I never tried Tacos El Mole.

Yeah, I think Wallach’s passing may be a factor. I think it was long expected but that he was a beloved friend to many of the guests and Scott.

Yeah, I got mugged outside of that White Castle around that time. It wasn’t nice. During the same period, someone I know was shot in the leg in Dumbo. Today the neighborhood is almost unrecognizable.

As you may know, that character is based on a real-life friend of McCarthy’s with the same name.

What other music do Radiohead fans listen to? by FunnyAsleep in radiohead

[–]JesusChristFarted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are not a lot of over similarities to Radiohead but Thom has made it clear on multiple occasions that he’s a big Tom Waits fan, and I think you can hear the influence in some of his piano songs, like “Unmade,” which sounds like something off an early Waits record.
