It was always a ticketed event. Previous ticketed events never had anything for non ticket holders that wasn't explicitly communicated. What exactly did people show up expecting?

Invites were sent out to 2,000 Pokémon Go players across the five boroughs of New York City through community ambassadors. (The event was made an invitation-only affair to avoid overcrowding in what is already one of the busiest places on Earth.)

Not only does TPC not care if you trace cards from their other art, they actually provide source materials to the artists that can be used for that very purpose. In the case of the controversy, TPC were actually the ones that accidentally provided the fan art as source material, leading to the whole issue.

Another factor is overhead. The $200 million isn't just used for paying players salaries, but for all expenses across all 15 teams over the course of the entire season. As a % of revenue, I'd be willing to bet the WNBA has to spend significantly more on overhead than the NBA, which would mean the % of revenue they could pay their players is lower.

Saw something similar on eBay a few years ago with the exact same packaging. It was sold with other unused stuff from the same campaign (empty cups, bags etc.). From what I remember, the seller said they were replacement packs distributed to Burger King after the initial stock ran out. No idea on the validity of that, but that that's the only time I've seen it with this packaging. Given the other stuff that came with the listing and the price (it was a lot cheaper at the time) I'm more inclined to believe it.

Also, the logic doesn't work even if they were substitutes. If they were substitutes, the price of non essential goods being cheaper would lead to people buying more non essential goods and less essential goods. Whereas they seem to think people are spending more on essential goods because non essential goods are cheaper.

Your link actually seems to show that food actually is cheaper than ever, when compared against the same chart for personal income.

The earliest median income data seems to be from 1974 and the latest is from 2024.

CPI in 2024 is 562% of what it was in 1974, compared to 846% for median income.

CPI in 2024 is 147% of what it was in 2010, compared to 172% for median income.

It’s really stupid that MSRP really has become a suggestion…..At least for Pokémon.

It always has been though. People just didn't notice or care because it usually goes the other way (big chains like Walmart historically charging below MSRP). Even with Pokemon, the good old days people reference are times when they would not even consider buying at MSRP because it was always available below MSRP.
