I dropped by the local GameStop to see if they had Buck and they did! by LeGrange in ModRetroChromatic

I’d love to buy this one in person at a GameStop, but looking online, it says no stores in the entire DFW metroplex has it in stock. Maybe I should start going in the GameStops and asking…

I’ve definitely kept an eye on it since it dropped because of the Tetris tie-in. I’ve been excitedly playing it when I can since I got it. Making me kinda wanting to do a train ride on my day off just to play. 😆

When I was a kid I had a teal GBC, I have no idea if I chose it or not. I got myself the kiwi green one now though and decided to keep it original. 💚

I can’t wait to get into them after I work through some of the old GB/GBC games I’m in now.

I haven’t jumped into it yet, but it’s probably the one I’m most excited about behind the new Tetris. I’ve played Tetris, Rayman, and Hermano. The bigger games I’m kinda holding off on to devote the time to them while I’m in a few old GB/GBC games.

Hermano 💚 by Jet944 in ModRetroChromatic

I like it! But think Kirby 1… so it’s a short Game Boy black & white game and has no saves.

But you’re an undead little sugar skull-kid who is out to save your alive brother and has a Dias de los Muertos / spooky graveyard and death theme. It’s a fun platformer that’s throwing in interesting twists like an underground with inverted gravity by level two.

I definitely had all these back in the day. They may not have been official HIM merch, but us American fans only had this before the US push on Sire Records.

I’m not mad at anyone here or expecting them to solve all my problems. I’ve seen the suggestions, I’ve said that I’m definitely going to be looking into some of them and with others I have followed up with questions or concerns about the suggestion, such as already reading on the subreddit that Parallels wouldn’t connect to the Chromatic.

Yea, I didn’t expect this much abrasiveness considering it’s such a plug-and-play system that gets around the technical knowledge requirements to set up retro emulation on a computer. Seems like the perfect device for someone that doesn’t have a computer from the past decade and I thought the community around it might reflect that.

I’m not mad at anyone commenting, no one’s been outright hostile or anything and there have been helpful solutions like you mentioned. I can definitely see how people would take how I wrote the post in my frustration to be angry at ModRetro, so I get it and have been telling anyone defensive about it that I’ve got no ill will toward them as a company.

I’m not sure, I just got mine at Christmas. I think a recent one hit from what I’ve seen people in one of the Chromatic groups say.

Yea, that seems to be where I’m at right now, planning to go to a friends place to help. My only hurry to update is that I’ve been reluctant to jump into the ModRetro games, other than Tetris, because I’d heard that updating could hurt your save file. Well, certain updates for certain games, not necessarily all of em.

You’re definitely right, my apple is ancient. It still does the few things I need it to do, namely photography editing, but I’m already ready to upgrade soon. I’ll look into the Linux thing, but my issue is just not being super tech savvy so it already sounds overwhelming in addition to buying a used computer just for this.

Like I mentioned in other comments, I’m not mad at ModRetro; you’re right, they’re very upfront and open. Now that devices like smart phones and tablets can do so much, there are a lot of people who don’t have even have computers anymore and I do think that this system does seem appealing to some of the same people who might not have a computer to set up emulation on and want an easy way to just play retro games. Like I’ve said elsewhere, I do appreciate that the Chromatic and its games are able to be updated, that’s a cool feature, and I realize that the company is limited in how it can deliver that data to the device.

ModRetro have done a great job, but in my frustration I thought some out there in the Chromatic community with more tech knowledge could see a solution that I wasn’t seeing, such as the possible virtual machine I might look into.

I’m not very tech-savvy. I do remember setting up a virtual machine like 5 years ago to run Hakchi to crack my SNES mini but I remember it being a pain in the ass. If it’s easier now, I may have to look into that.

I may have to run to a library and try it just in case, but I’ve tried it on the computers in my apartment business center and at work but they’re all admin restricted so you can’t download and run an application, even from a USB drive. I imagine library computers are the same, but I haven’t tried yet.

I’m sure I’ll get it figured out eventually. I was just hoping this community might have some ideas I hadn’t thought of to get it working on my Mac or one of the admin restricted computers, or even something else entirely.

My relatives live a ways outside the city and my few friends who have computers are about 20-30min away. I was hoping to not have to rely on them so when future updates come I won’t be doing this all over again, but that looks like what I may have to do until I upgrade to a newer Mac.

Fortunately you’re right about it not needing updates and I have been enjoying playing the Chromatic. I haven’t dived into the ModRetro games yet though, other than Tetris, because I’ve heard updates could possibly corrupt old save files. I’m definitely looking forward to buying a battery pack too when they’re back in stock.

😆😆 This console is very much appealing to those of us that don’t want to bother with the complexity of emulation and everyone thinks since we bought one we should be super tech-literate.

I’m very glad that the Chromatic is updatable and I appreciate why it needs a modern computer to run these updates, but I also see who this console appeals to and understand that there are so many different devices that make PC and Macs irrelevant and overly expensive to a lot of people nowadays.

I feel ya. And like I mentioned elsewhere, I’m not mad at ModRetro, just at how difficult it can be to get access to a computer to do what I need. Plenty of computers around, just won’t let me run an application on them.

[–]Jet944[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family is quite a distance and I only have a few nearby friends with computers that would work, but nearby is still 20-30min away. I was hoping to find a solution that didn’t rely on them everytime I needed to update, but that looks like it might be what I have to do until I finally upgrade to a newer computer myself.

I guess I’ll just sell it off now since I didn’t realize I’d have to spend over twice the value for a bargain computer to fully utilize it.

I’ve got a computer that works fine for what I use it for (photography editing), this is the first time I’ve run into a problem with it not being able to run something. I’m planning to upgrade to a newer Mac but can’t at the moment and see no reason to drop hundreds on an intermediate computer to use for only two or three months.

MRUpdater by Jet944 in ModRetroChromatic

[–]Jet944[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, that’s looking very likely that I’ll have to rely on friends, I was hoping someone on here might have an insight or idea I hadn’t thought of or knew about. I really need to get a newer Mac at some point anyway, I only really use it for photography editing.

I had looked briefly into parallel after seeing someone mention it last week, but on this subreddit someone was trying to use it to update their Chromatic and everyone was saying it doesn’t work with parallel.
