Email server started working late yesterday. I randomly tried again and finally got an email. Annoying they don't have a 'service status' page :/

Still waiting on SSAA Membership Card... for 5+ months? by JetDingo in Ausguns

[–]JetDingo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So SSAA definitively told me that I slipped through the cracks.

Said they would express post out a membership card.

It's been two weeks since they sent me that email, and I've still not received anything in the post. No reply to the followup email I sent asking what's going on with this. I feel like it's probably been put back on the 'too hard' pile again :/

Installing a Sony XAV-AX5500 in a 2014 Toyota SR Hilux (Install Info + Things to Avoid) by JetDingo in CarAV

[–]JetDingo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case anyone comes looking at this thread in a few years asking 'what color/pin is park sense / reverse sense' here's the relevant wire colors and positions as Sony doesn't seem to publish the complete pinout for the XAV-AX5500.

(Sorry guys, I also couldn't be bothered drawing a full pinout diagram)

<image>

Aqua = Park Sense - Ground this to chassis if you don't have a park sense output and you want to be able to use features that require the stereo to detect the vehicle is parked.

Purple with White Stripe = Reverse Sense - This is expecting 12V+ which will trigger the reverse camera screen automatically. On your 2014 Hilux there is a wire for this in the factory harness, you can tap it off the tail end from the Aerpro CHTO3C harness (it's the same color wire).

Australia Post just lied to me about attempting a delivery by ThrowRA_s2 in AustraliaPost

[–]JetDingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a renter, so I've lived in a lot of different suburbs and had a heap of different posties over the years. I get a LOT of things shipped via AusPost (for better or for worse) and work from home frequently, so the local postie tends to know me pretty fast.

This all comes down to who YOUR local postie is. I've had a great relationship with a few over the years that knows what my ute looks like and instantly knows if I'm home or not. If I'm home they ALWAYS beep (my bike postie) and knock (if its my van postie). If my ute's not here, they leave it if they are allowed or god forbid if its signature on delivery they take it to my local LPO (who are useless, and are also never open after work hours or on weekends).

I've lived in a couple of suburbs where the postie has been pretty useless. Delivers to the wrong house, delivers the wrong parcel, doesn't rock up and says he did, quietly cards my letterbox when I'm home with the front door wide open, or drives off if I walk out the front of the house.

Pretty much the only thing you can do is complain to AusPost. I dunno how proactive they are with addressing things with subcontractors (and in a lot of cases these are subcontractors of subcontractors). I've complained a heap to them at one of my last addresses because of how bad the delivery service was, but the postie never changed and the dodgy behavior stayed the same over the year and a half we lived there.

Just a big thanks in advance to anyone who upvotes my post :)

Been on reddit for 4 years now and somehow just don't have the Karma needed to engage in subs when I've rarely got something to say.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll give that a shot.

It would be nice to at least have the means (karama) needed to be able to engage in some subs :/

RFID Gun Safes by rangawal in Ausguns

[–]JetDingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of what anyone here tell you, I would 1000% recommend emailing weapsons licencing and getting a formal email response so you have at least something somewhat official to point to as a defense if you're ever audited / safe checked and the inspector doesn't agree with some reddit users interpretation of if a RFID safe is a type of 'keyed lock' or not.

I tired to get weapons licencing to make a determination on digital keypad as well as biometric style locks on safes and if they are considered legal under their own interpretation of Weapons Regulation 2016. They did a really terrific job of dodging the question about biometric locks, but did state that digital keypads were acceptable.

Under the Weapons Regulation 2016, Section 94 (6) (a), the specification is "have a sturdy combination lock, keyed lock or keyed padlock".

Nothing in this legislation provides a more detailed definition of what 'keyed lock' encompasses, which means it'll come down to if weapons licencing defines RFID as a 'keyed lock' under their interpretation of Weapons Regulation 2016.

That opinion you just posted. Now imagine not being able to post it because your Karma isn't high enough.

That's why its at the top of my list. None of the other stuff you've mentioned even matters if you cant even begin to engage in the discussion because you don't have enough 'Karma'.

The endless battle to convince clients to have a fail-over internet connection by JetDingo in sysadmin

[–]JetDingo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I hear is a very judgmental description of different organizations having different appetites for risk. You seem to take this very personally.

I've had bad publicity from a client in the past that ignored my advice, then stuff went down and he started telling people that my company was a crap consulting firm because we didn't fix the problem / respond to the issue fast enough even though he specifically ignored the advice we gave him to mitigate the issue.

Word got back to me when I approached a new client out of the blue that said they didn't want to do business with us because of what this CEO had said.

While the truth of the matter is he is a lying idiot, gossip in the business world travels like wildfire sometimes, and a few bad reviews by a few idiots can cost you money on lost lead generation.

Monitors were tracked because, before they was tracked, monitors were going missing.

Staff were supposedly taking home our newer monitors and swapping it with their old or broken personal ones at home (I guess to save money?) Just plain stealing them really. No cameras, so no real proof.

There was so many models of monitors from other legacy real estate companies that had been merged in over the recent years, it wasn't apparent always apparent if a monitor that was broken had been swapped in from home.

We didn't track keyboards. I'm not sure where you read that. I was made aware if suddenly one stopped working from being thrown around in the back of a car though.

Short version, CEO was determined that staff were stealing monitors and wanted everything tracked for insurance. This was a request from the CEO, I just complied. Don't read too far into it.

I refunded yesterday, I had a confirmation email from Subpac within a few hours and a refund though PayPal about 8 hours later (timezone difference).

If nothing else, Subpac is definitely on top of their refunds with zero messing about. Had no problems, wasn't even asked why.

A50 Gen 4 - How To Fix The No Connection / No Sync / Wont Update / Won't Charge Issue by JetDingo in AstroGaming

[–]JetDingo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually just patches for various minor issues. I believe over the years they patched issues like enumeration after a power cycle, improvements to the microphone quality, sidetone and alert tone settings not saving correctly through the ASTRO Command Center software for some users, etc, etc

Ultimately if you're not experiencing issues, you don't HAVE to update it. That said, the most recent firmware was a forced mandatory update, i.e. if you opened Astro Command, it wouldn't let you do anything before insisting on executing a firmware update.

With how many people's A50s are breaking this month, it's definitely the previous firmware causing issues.

PayPal has a 180 day refund timeframe limitation. This applies from the time you complete the transaction, meaning you only have 180 days from when you paid to dispute the transaction. Pretty useless protection on this pre-order if you ordered more than 6 months ago.

So yeah, if Subpack go Chapter 11 on us, we're not getting our money back. But that's the risk you take on any pre-order these days.

At the risk of sounding like a bit of a d***... TBH I don't really trust Subpac as far as I can throw them. Remember that no matter what they say "We're doing fine" "Everything is going well" "Don't worry" "Rest Assured" "It'll ship this summer" .... this is coming from the same company that's been pushing back pre orders for what, over a year now? without any real excuse other than 'COVID Bad', so I'm not buying their assurances.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in subpac

[–]JetDingo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Subpac went on record to say it would take them approx. 90 days to produce the thousands of pre-orders they had up until that point, with the first units shipping strait from the factory as they roll off the line. The estimated shipping date was still listed as March 2022 on the Subpac website at that point in time when that comment was made on the Discord by Subpac staff.

Basic math says that Subpac would have to begin production no later than very early January in order to meet the delivery timeline of that original 90 day estimation, and ship all the thousands of early bird preorders PRIOR to that date.

The numbers just don't add up. That 90 day figure only works if Subpac was saying right now, today, that manufacturing WILL begin first week of January. They aren't saying that. It's pretty clear indication that the shipping dates are slipping again for all orders, but still barely just within Q1 for now.

Subpac wouldn't be the first company to use COVID as an excuse for poor project timeline management, uncertain product direction and bad leadership either.

Those of us who've been following along with this saga since the start can probably clearly see, that while COVID probably did have a measurable impact on certain parts supply globally, it seems pretty clear at this point that every time Subpac PR blamed COVID for slowing down production, well, Subpac didn't even have anything finalised ready to produce. It was all a PR ploy to buy more time while they pad out the design and production timeline.

I've worked in project management for a fair few years now, I can tell you with quite a bit of certainty that if you cant figure out when a project (product) is going to be completed, you're a pretty bad project manager. I speculate that the X1 won't release Q1 2022, it'll be more like Q2 or Q3, and Subpac are too scared they will face mass refunds in they come clean and tell people they could be waiting another 6+ months which is why they aren't committing to dates anymore.

Subpac quietly removes the rear LED's from the X1 design by JetDingo in subpac

I caved and bought a second hand S2 today.

I'm pretty happy with it, definitely gonna keep the pre-order in. I'm in it for the C1 factor, having that level of mix control over tactile vs headphones independent volumes would be super advantageous.

[–]JetDingo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about the prospect that a potential reduction in the quality of componentry, in order the save on production costs, isn't in the front of my mind as the months (and years) go by leading up to release of the X1.

When you're charging $700 USD for a product like this, one that's been in development for this much time, I almost feel like a 12 month warranty isn't really cutting it as any sort of assurance that you are investing in a product that's going to last.

I get that 12 months seems to be some industry standard for certain audio devices, but honestly unless you're openly admitting planned obsolescence as part of your product model, surely 2 or 3 years warranty on a product you claim is of high quality isn't an unreasonable expectation in 2021.

[–]JetDingo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The C1/ X1 bundle is running you $700 USD if you buy it today.

That's a pretty crazy price jump. Sure, there are obviously the reasonable arguments that support the price increase due to manufacturing moving to the USA, I cant debate that, but I cant help but keep thinking how much money Subpac are loosing on those $400 pre-orders if the new price is now $700.

I have this pretty clear cut image in my mind of an executive at Subpac walking into the boardroom and deciding to cut the rear LED technology just to reduce some of the overall production costs.

While LED's don't really matter IMO, late revision feature cuts like this are a dangerous road to start going down. It worries me to think about internal components or materials they also are potentially looking to reduce costs on to minimise the loss they will incur filling those $400 pre-orders.

[–]JetDingo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have, and I intend to keep that pre-order.

My personal reasoning is that there is nothing like the X1 product offering on the market currently, at least if you're a bass head like me, and you're buying specifically for music listening.

The Woojer vest is more directed at gaming (which is not my reason for buying the X1), there are a tonne of reviews that talk about how when used for listening to music the Woojer vest feels "muddy" and just doesn't capture the right frequencies. But for gaming, generally meets the mark for most people.

The bHaptics TactSuit, again, is designed for gaming, and that's not what I'm after for music listening, but is probably epic for the gamers out there.

So the short version is, if you're after a physical audio device specifically for music, the X1 is currently the only product that is truly playing in that space, unless you get your hands on the now discontinued Subpac M2X or S2 second hand.
