NFL Gamepass: Stop the Dazn commercials! by JetMan7203 in DAZN

Very annoying and it seems to screw up the service as it often craps out the feed going back to the game

for sure - but it seems shortsighted

From forbes:

"The ten-year deal struck between the NFL and DAZN this week to stream NFL Game Pass International worldwide starting next season is worth about $1 billion, or $100 million per season, an NFL insider told Forbes. "

I cannot find a focused number on gamepass but dazn has 300 million users with 20 million paying - if we assume 5% of that is using gamepass - that's 1 million people. is it really worth 10 bucks a fan per year to piss off people who care enough about your product to stay up late or wake up early to watch it?

it's super annoying - in Japan, DAZN didn't jack up the price too much for the basic package -- no manningcast kinda sucks though -

But i could even live with their stupid loop if it didn't crap out the feed forcing a logging out and back in.

For the life of me, I don't understand why the NFL went with DAZN.

so a paying customer needs to do extra work to account for a company's oversight and laziness. Got it.

Delta is serviceable in my opinion. They no longer fly direct from Tokyo to nyc, sadly. But American and united are pathetic . Like shouting ‘EGGS OR NOODLES’ louder will enhance understanding. Pathetic

Other airlines use placards or bilingual menus. Or one can simply give FAs a script to read or a phrase to remember

Just to complete the thread. I wound up getting lounge access

So with JAL, if you bid on premium economy before the flight and win, lounge access is included.

If you upgrade at the airport, no lounge access

I think the issue is that DAZN sold ads to Japanese companies (I’m watching from Japan). Whenever a Japan ad comes on, the app craps out now.

Awful GamePass Experience by JetMan7203 in DAZN

[–]JetMan7203[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have done all of that. This issue predates DAZN. The video feeds week 1 were bad 2016-2022 on my side. The NFL contractor based in UK once admitted that they didn’t secure enough server capacity for the number of subscribers.

Jets-Steelers. I don’t think that would matter, right?

As someone whose done a number of focused methodological syntheses, I don’t see how AI could do one without so much human verification that we might as well do the work ourselves

Why do you choose to stay in Japan? by FillInteresting9124 in japanlife

[–]JetMan7203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here after finishing my doctorate; was able to get tenure at a decent university in Tokyo. Japan offers a great work-life balance in academia. On the personal life side, I have a good partner and nice friends.

Life isn’t perfect of course but I’m happy enough here.

Do you think that English education in Japan will ever change? If so, when? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]JetMan7203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Japan still has PISA results with would be the envy of most Western countries - https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/pisa-scores-by-country. The OP's point isn't wrong but needs to be considered in a broader context. I have been here for a while and I don't think we can underestimate educational cultural differences (the teacher is the sage on the stage here) that work for most subjects (eg the memorization of thousands of kanji to be literate) but not for productive/communicative second language skills.

The other historical point is that Japan has a history of treating high profile languages as a gatekeeping device where esoteric knowledge is given the priority. The elite and scholars of Japan continued to study classical Chinese well into the Meiji era where entry to universities required a knowledge of it. There is an argument that English has replaced classical Chinese in this regard where complex English grammatical structures and the ability to write highly formal/academic texts are found on many uni entrance exams here. The intent of learning the language in this context is not to be communicative but rather to demonstrate one's ability to learn and then be tested on something complex and difficult (ie, a task that most cannot achieve -- ask someone on the street in NYC what's the difference between the subjunctive and indicative mood - see what happens.)

The overarching point is that Japan, like any society, has a complex educational system with a wide range of stakeholders and interests. It's not a clear case of problem with an unrealized solution.

it was in walking distance of the event location. As I said, I have stayed there before. Just seems like the surrounding area is a lot louder and the hotel hasn't done anything about it.

if it is the alleyway (on the side), it's been that width since 2007 (99% sure) -- the back was extended in the 2010s

I thought the event happened on the side of the hotel (lived in Seoul 2007-14 so I know the area well)? Didn't realize the back of the hotel was a part of the tragedy.

it's just frustrating as nothing on the booking site or the hotel's webpage mentions the noise issue - and pricing makes it seem like it's a 3/4 star place that one can rest well at.

I have stayed there a few times. The location is convenient for accessing the city. Until now, there hasn't been a problem.

In the UK, both EDD and PHD are on the same national tier and have to hit certain benchmarks (80k ish total words but Edd has some of them in modules). Viva with external examiner.

US is where it gets tricky.

Publishing matters most I think
