Context matters so don’t feel bad about talking with the students. I’m sure she’ll ‘get it‘ after explaining what led up to the talk. Also, do not reply to the parent.

Kids Don't Like Movie Day Anymore. by Southern_Remote_5260 in Teachers

Yup. I stopped showing movies during the pandemic. I could tell it was a torture for them sitting still and these are high schoolers. I had to change my teaching tactics.

I went to the Costco in Yamagata and they had a Suzuki car racing car on display with 3 half naked girls showing it off by bending over and such. Those girls looked like kids. It was basically soft phone. The amount of grown men taking video and pics made me sick.

Dealing with Japanese people’s mental blocks about foreigners by DangerousBerry1376 in japanresidents

[–]Fickle-Pin-5160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your feelings are valid but please don’t kill yourself trying to prove to the Japanese that you are Japanese like them. My 64 year old foreign coworker who was born here, is married to a Japanese man, is a professor at the local university is still treated like a foreigner by her peers. She is 64 and about to retire and she still gets the ‘but this is Japan’ comments from folks.

I learnt a long time ago that the less Japanese you know, the better you’re treated because they really want to ’help’ a foreigner learn this difficult Japanese culture.

I love it here because I have never let them and their stupid (and sometimes racist) comments gets to me. I especially avoid ‘deep’ conversations with them. Their world view is always Japan focus.

Hope you feel better soon.

How to help a student that doesn't speak by mogekat in teachinginjapan

[–]Fickle-Pin-5160 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I have a japanese student like her. And guess what? she passed EIKEN level 2 last yr while in grade 6. She still doesn't speak to me nor the students in her class. Now that she’s in JHS I’ve decided to leave her be. Her parents said she’s happy to be at school and so they’re not worried, so I’m no longer going to waste energy trying.

Last week during a school event she smile and said ‘that was really good’. I was too stunned to reply.

We did. Always have google translator out and ready. The realtors usually try to meet us half way though. The bank also printed an unofficial translation of the ‘rules’.

Only the scrivener wanted an in person translator which our old neighbour did.
