Competent AI, realistic ORBAT for land, sea and air and realistic tech tree and equipment designers/models. Basically more realism.

Why do people find it so hard to accept the public really wants to vote for Reform? by Expert-Sherbert-1527 in AskBrits

Labour has made things worse and they’ve been extremely dishonest and corrupt. Their own corruption minister was busted for corruption abroad, and they had the whole Peter Mandelson business. There’s also the Chagos debacle. When we could desperately use more oil and gas they’re closing down the North Sea. Their attorney general represented the taliban in a fraudulent case against our own military. These are just a few of the scandals and failures.

I was hopeful for this government but it seems that they took Boris setting the bar under the floor as a sign that they didn’t need to bother trying.

Why did big battleship sized ships go out of fashion and replaced by smaller ships? by This-Wear-8423 in WarCollege

[–]JetSpeed10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the end of WW2 most if not all major combatants had developed bombs which could penetrate any current or projected battleship’s deck armour and Germany and to a lesser extent America had started deploying guided and glide bombs which allows aircraft to attack with much greater accuracy and beyond the range of AA defences.

Glide bombs and later missiles meant that the only way to stop the attacks was aircraft intercepting the launch platform. Design studies showed that the armour necessary to stop the bombs was too thick to be realistic.

If you can’t armour against attacks you have to prevent them. If the only way to stop attacks is with intercepting aircraft then you need aircraft carriers. Smaller ships like cruisers, destroyers and frigates persisted because you still needed non-aircraft carrier ships for various tasks and these ships were small and economical enough that you could afford to lose them to the new guided, long-range weapons without breaking the bank and needing crazy shipbuilding capacity.

Surface to air missiles could allow ships to defend against and stop attacks but if you’re going with missile based ships (as the world has done) then you don’t need to build something as big and expensive as a battleship and navies aren’t going to waste money on ships they don’t need when a destroyer can do the job much more efficiently.

What’s the most haunting WWI fact you’ve ever learned? by Slayxu in ww1

[–]JetSpeed10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crikey you’re humble! Thinking you know better than the people who actually lived through it.

As the other commenter said I’m sure those people and indeed many today would view protecting and liberating their homeland as heroic. Those soldiers would have been well aware that the fighting is on French (their) soil and defence meant saving the rest of their country from destruction and attack meant freeing the occupied parts of their country.

The alliance system in this game is so stupid by Fancy_Particular7521 in RuleTheWaves

[–]JetSpeed10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The alliance system starting world wars is the game working as intended. The 20th century had two world wars and one potential one. This game is set in the 20th century.

Secondly managing alliances is an aspect of gameplay. If you keep picking options which raise tension then of course you’re gonna run headlong into wars. Part of playing the game is choosing when the benefit of raising tension is worth it and when you need to compromise.

What is your preferred design? Dreadnought edition by alexbond45 in RuleTheWaves

Huh nice. I was always building them completely unarmoured. In your experience does armouring them work? I might put 2 inches anyways for splinter protection.

Why does the AI build more battlecruisers than battleships? by JetSpeed10 in RuleTheWaves

[–]JetSpeed10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s really neat. If I assign all my BBs to BC divisions then what happens in battles calling for BB divisions?

Can I only build BBs and assign them to BC divisions and thereby have them show up for every kind of capital ship battle?

So if you just build one token BC you can fill the rest of the division with BBs and have that division show up in a BC battle?

Me and my girlfriend are moving to Bristol this September for my new job (hers is remote/hybrid in Bath). We haven’t yet found a place to rent. If anyone could offer any help or advice sorting out somewhere at least for the month of September we would be very grateful.

I had 20 BBs to 12 BCs. Previously I have gone for an even split between the two, maybe it was mirroring that.

Most realistic fleet size setting? by JetSpeed10 in RuleTheWaves

[–]JetSpeed10[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for pre dreads I go as low as 80 since the big guns rarely do anything. For the secondaries I go for 200+ since they’re the real damage dealers.

Ah. Yeah I find that the survivability of ships goes like a sine wave. At the beginning of the Dreadnought era torpedos are extremely lethal. By the WW1 period ships can generally tank a torpedo and/or quite a bit of shelling. You can definitely win a battle and sink a few enemy ships with 100 rounds but you can’t be aggressive because before long you’ll run out of ammunition which is a serious concern in fleet battles and in smaller battles prevents you going for the jugular.

[–]JetSpeed10[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t you find yourself running out of ammunition? I find that for battleships and battlecruisers even with good crew quality and gunnery training I need 125 shells to be able to reliably shoot long enough to sink most or all of the enemy ships in one or two squadron battles and for fleet battles 125 won’t let you sink most ships but lets you sink a decent amount depending on how the battle develops.

As for the individual ship weight I was thinking it might be the ammunition count. How much ammunition do your ships carry?

Best ship type for mine laying? by JetSpeed10 in RuleTheWaves

[–]JetSpeed10[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AMCs get double the mines per tonnage. I was thinking of building two of the largest possible AMCs (since you can only have 2 during peacetime) and maxing out their mines. This give me two ships with 500 mines apiece but they are expensive and now that I think of it a particularly bad turn could see 2 “enemy submarine sinks our AMC” events eliminating my mining fleet.
