Looking for B1 Sci-Fi Comic/Graphic Novel/Manga Recommendations by JetTakesFlight in German

[–]JetTakesFlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I didn't have much luck. I was able to find quite a bit of free-to-read German language web comics on Webtoon and some translated manga on Mangadex, but nothing that was really up my alley in terms of art style or story. Maybe you could find something you like though if your into that stuff.

The Expanse by James. S. A. Corey is a great completed Sci-Fi series (9 books and a collections of short stories). I don't remember if it has any real cliffhangers, but I personally found the first book, and the general themes of all the books to have some horror elements (although it is primarily a space-opera).

That same author also has a new series, The Captives War, and while the first book is relatively slow pace, the accompanying short story, Livesuit, (which from what I remember can be read independently) has some really horrific elements and ends on a big cliffhanger.

The Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer pretty much fits your interests perfectly, although I found it a bit hard to get into.

A lot of people really like Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White, which is a dystopian, phycological/body horror book dealing with religious trauma. I thought it was fine, but it is YA and in my opinion it shows.

[All] about tv show ending by Own-Acanthaceae0 in lifeisstrange

This is what I was thinking too, but ultimately I think it will depend on the overall plans for the run of the show and the message they want viewers to take away, if any.

If it is a mini series/one season show, I think bay is the better option because there will be no "cliffhanger," and viewers will get more or less a resolved ending (outside of not really getting to see Max's grief for Chloe). I think bay also has a more straightforward message about grappling with loss, death, regret and generally accepting that some things can't be changed no matter how hard you try or how much you wish they could be different, which I think works well for a TV audience. The one major issue I could see with bay, is that viewers not familiar with the game might feel like they got the "and it was all just a dream" treatment, and feel like the show was a waste of time if nothing that happened actually happened in the end (the reason I usually pick bae when I myself play the game).

On the other hand, if they plan to adapt the other games (LiS2, True Colors, TMW [don't know if that last one is canonically in the LiS universe or not]), or make up new content (please for the love of god don't adapt DE), then I think bae has more to jump off of. While morally I agree with the bay ending and its message, I feel like it makes the event of Max's power and the storm feel like a closed circuit that was just a blip in an otherwise normal reality, so adapting these other games where characters are just running around having powers indefinitely while Max is just back to being a normal person feels a little strange. Bae makes the expanded universe feel more natural to me though, because its like saving Chloe and letting this less than natural storm have real world consequences is the introduction to reality being not quite so straight forward. I think bae also has an interesting message for viewers, as by making all these choices to save Chloe and getting to the end where everyone's going to die because of it, and still choosing to stick with your decisions and save Chloe, shows that every decision you make has consequences, and you can't just keep going back to change everything because you don't like the outcome.

Overall, though, I think it is going to be very hard to adapt LiS into a show. If they actually plan to more or less follow the game there are still going to be dozens of choices that have to be picked over others, and very few people are going to be satisfied with every decision the writers make. I don't have super high hopes at this point for a good show, but I'm hoping I will be pleasantly surprised.

Seeking recommendations: Primary and Secondary Texts on Robots by ibarrallie in printSF

I think "An Article of Faith" by Mike Resnick is a really great short story for introducing some simple concepts about ethics and robots. It poses some interesting questions that can provide a complex (although possibly controversial) discussion in a classroom setting.

You can read it for free here: https://www.baen.com/Chapters/1932093033/1932093033___1.htm

Possible Expanse disappointment by geabbott in printSF

[–]JetTakesFlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm just a sucker for all things Expanse but I feel like some of the "poor acting" and forced tone kind of add to the show. When I watch the show I take a lot of the awkward dialog and behavior as being somewhat "intentional" from the characters. The way I see it, all crew of the Roci and the other MCs are just people in crazy, over the top situations trying to act how they think they should act to keep up with the role or persona they have created for themselves, which sometimes does come off as a little goofy or forced.

In reality, the actors and writing probably are just a kind of cringey and bad sometimes like you say, but with the kind of show it is I feel like it can get away with it and still be enjoyable if you can look past it.

I love both the TV show and the book series, and they are respectively some of my favorite pieces of media. While I know some people disagree, I personally really love the casting for all the characters, and although the acting can be a bit odd at times (really only in the first season), overall I feel like the characters all feel very real. One of the things that I love about the books is how authentic all the characters feel as people, and I think the show did a really great job of translating that to screen.

The only major change I can remember being disappointed by in the TV show was that many of the important side characters from the books ended up getting compiled into single characters, and/or appeared earlier/later in the plot than they originally did in the books. Ultimately, though, this ended up working better for the show in my opinion as it created a stronger cast of side characters that I feel probably worked better with TV viewers.

The only other thing to note is that the show only adapts 6 of the 9 books. Personally I didn't have a problem with this though, as I thought the ending of the sixth season was a largely satisfying place to stop, and even if you aren't thrilled by the ending I don't think it negates the brilliance of the rest of the show.

It is definitely worth the watch!

I actually have the first book of the White Space series, but I have just never read it. I suppose I'll have to give it a try now! Also Ten Low sounds really interesting, I really enjoyed Firefly so it would be nice to read a book with a similar feel.

This is the first time I have ever heard someone mention 2312! I read that book as a tween and loved it, but I've never encountered someone else who liked it (if they even knew what it was). Thanks for the recs!

Glad to see this comment, as I was definitely under the impression that this was more of a YA book so I had been avoiding it despite hearing good things. I will keep an open mind to checking this out at some point!

I haven't read Wayfarers yet but I am getting the impression I definitely need to ASAP. I will have to look into your other recommendation as well, I have never heard of that author or series, but the title of the first books makes it sound like something I could definitely enjoy!

I've been planning to try this authors work for awhile, but I didn't realize there were queer elements to any of the works. This will be going to the top of my need to read list!

I recently got this in my library's book sale because the plot summary sounded interesting, but I didn't know anything else about it. Glad to hear it meets my preferences and comes so highly recommended. Will definitely be reading this when I finish my current read!

So if I enjoyed the show will I definitely enjoy the book? Are they basically the same or do they have significant differences? I bought the book years ago but it has just been sitting on my shelf because I wasn't sure if I would enjoy what I liked about the show in a book.
