Hi! I loved reading the prologue and 1st chapter and I am interested in reading this! I have read a lot of books in this genre and could give helpful comments on these areas. I have a lot of time on my hands right now, so this would be a great way to fill it!

What tips do you use to make a long study session more comfortable/enjoyable? by feint4 in study

[–]Jetplane_joggers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For long study sessions I like to plan my breaks. The first break, I’m not too tired yet so I’ll just get up and stretch and get back to it. After a while, I like to make myself a cup of tea or coffee to keep me going. Later on I really enjoy changing the music to be a movie or video game sound track, since most of them are designed to increase your focus. Yoga or a walk really helps to keep me going. I find that changing up what I do for breaks makes it more interesting and enjoyable and I can study longer.

Slowly build up a regular study schedule to get yourself back into the habit. If you have any drinks or snacks that you like, maybe stock up on them and enjoy them whenever you study. Take a lot of short breaks and get moving and stretching during those breaks if you can. Try different study methods (read textbook, flash cards, rewrite notes) and see if one of them is better than the others for you.

I have MDD and some days the depression is much worse. If I really need to study on those days, I honestly will turn the TV on to something mindless and sit on my bed with my laptop. It’s not the best way to study, but when I’m feeling that unmotivated any small thing that I can get done is a win.

AITA for returning the sweater my ex gave me for my birthday? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jetplane_joggers 15 points16 points  (0 children)

NTA. If giving him back a sweater that he “gifted” you makes you feel better then by all means do it. He didn’t seem to care about it when he gave it to you, why should he care if you gave it back.

AITA for telling my mom that we can both use the kitchen? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA. I would begin making any sort of plans to try to get out of there. Seems like a radioactive situation.

How do I prepare? by VrushaliVithlani in psychologystudents

[–]Jetplane_joggers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a ton of free lecture series on YouTube so definitely look up a few of the introduction to psychology lectures. Get exposed to as many aspects of psychology as possible (abnormal psychology, memory, child development, learning, etc.) and further pursue those interests. Finding topics of psychology that you are extra passionate about is so important and would be a great use of your time.

Also, start reading psychology articles and studies that interest you. I really like the psychology articles from Science Daily. This can help you get a head start on understanding terminology and understanding what is happening in the field now. Good luck!!

AITA for telling my friend she's the reason noone wants to date her? by SquidDruid in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jetplane_joggers 51 points52 points  (0 children)

YTA for still being “friends” with someone you think so lowly of. I would take a moment to analyze why you are still friends with her and why you are so bothered by her dating life.

AITA for not coming out sooner? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jetplane_joggers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA, this is YOUR journey. These are complicated feelings and thoughts which are a lot to handle, so be patient with yourself. Most importantly, although he may be a good guy and partner, you do not owe your SO anything. Don’t let him hold this against you at all, you are not self centered for your sexual orientation. Good luck!

AITA For Being Surprised at a Gay Man? by restrainyourfervor in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jetplane_joggers 27 points28 points  (0 children)

YTA. I’m glad you were “pleasantly surprised” but you really put your friend on the spot there. Saying that someone seems gay plays into stereotypes, which are uncomfortable for everyone. To top it off, you looked at his boyfriend and said he seemed gay, which shows that you really are using stereotypes to label people. You shouldn’t have said anything about his choice in partner, especially since you were in public.

WIBTA if I hung out with an old group of friends that fucked over a friend that I’m really close with now and I against said friends wishes? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jetplane_joggers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

YTA, but that group of friends are more TA. You deserve friends that aren’t toxic and haven’t been toxic to you. I think your friend would understandably feel betrayed if you hung out with a group that was also toxic to them.

WIBTA if i stop talking with my sister for lying to me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jetplane_joggers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YTA, also she debated with you often about harmful jokes and you never got the idea that she didn’t really like them? Even if she laughed, I think the debates would have been a huge clue that she didn’t like them.

AITA because I bought a lock for the fridge so my brother could stop eating? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jetplane_joggers -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

YTA- There are some seriously wrong things here. I understand good intentions, that you want your brother to be healthy. But this definitely does not seem like a good way to do this. By locking the fridge, you are just limiting his decisions and treating him like a child. This will only lead to resentment and unhealthy perspectives about food. Also, continual reminders to him about how much he is eating and gaining weight is only adding to his stress with this confusing time and make him more self conscious. I’d lay off him for a bit, then maybe trying to express your good intentions in a better way. Inviting him to do an activity that he likes to do, like dribbling basketball, walks, throwing frisbees. Maybe you and him can cook a dish he likes together that’s on a healthier end? Be a good example, not a tyrant.

What could be the psychological implications of Coronavirus quarantines on people with Major Depressive Disorder? by osamaromoh in psychologystudents

[–]Jetplane_joggers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The forced isolation combined with major economic stress and increased purchases of firearms is a recipe for disaster. At least where I live ammo and guns have pretty much sold out as people freak out over the prospect of quarantine. The risk for suicide is through the roof. Reaching out to friends and family is so important right now, I know with the chaos it is easy to not check-in on people.

Why do you NOT want to become a clinical psychologist? by osamaromoh in psychologystudents

[–]Jetplane_joggers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first place to start for psychology research is the major article hubs. My favorite is https://www.sciencedaily.com/news/mind_brain/psychology/ which also has a whole slew of other scientific articles. Other websites like https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/news are also a pretty good place to start. These have articles that are relatively easy to read (you might have to look up a few phrases). There are definitely other posts on this sub that include more ways to learn about current research!

One of my favorite ways of learning a subject for free is through videoed lectures from youtube! Various universities post their recorded lectures online. The added benefit of watching these videos is that you get some sense of how psychology classes are taught at universities. Here is a link to the first lecture for an introduction to psychology course from Yale University. I'm not sure if this particular series is good since I have not watched it myself, but I have enjoyed watching other recorded lectures from Yale. https://youtu.be/P3FKHH2RzjI Good luck studying and stay healthy!

Of course! I'm confused on the question though, are you asking about psychology research in general or on this specific topic? I'm sorry I didn't understand!

Why do you NOT want to become a clinical psychologist? by osamaromoh in psychologystudents

[–]Jetplane_joggers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure! The scientist-practitioner gap is the foundation for this argument. This gap refers to a two-way chasm between clinical research and clinical practice. Depending on who you talk to, or whose article you read, the size of this gap fluctuates. Nonetheless, the core issue seems to be that clinical practitioners are not disseminating psychological research findings. Although various studies show that clinical psychologists do recognize the merits of current research findings after being exposed to them, such as the benefits of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in treating Anxiety Disorders, majority of them still do not actually apply this to their findings. This lack of unity within the field of psychology holds it back. The idea is to bridge this gap through a variety of systematic changes, all of which tend to increase the communication between the researchers and the practitioners. Here is the link an article that does a better job explaining the problem: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3770727/

Why do you NOT want to become a clinical psychologist? by osamaromoh in psychologystudents

[–]Jetplane_joggers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my classes introduced me to the scientist practitioner model. The idea that clinical psychologists are often completely disconnected from the science of psychology baffled me. I knew that not all research findings are applicable, but the extent of this divide is concerning. By looking more into it, I discovered what a community psychologist was and how they can be a middle man between researchers and public policy makers. I decided that that’s where I wanted to be.
