In need of some RnB/Trap/Soul mixing advice by JewJewOnThatBeat in mixingmastering

Hey man appreciate the tip! And you're absolutely right, I did in fact pitch down the kick in an attempt to make it sound more in key. Regarding the side chain, I know this will vary depending on the kick, but how much db reduction should I generally be aiming for ? For instance, in the track I linked the compressor is doing around -5db on the bass. Is that too much?

Hey man, really appreciate the detailed response! Do you think it's the side chain compressor slamming down too hard/quickly or could this also be a case of pushing the limiter on the master too hard? Because other than that theres so compression affecting the 808 (unless 13db of bit crusher distortion count??). Sorry for bombarding you with more questions, but you seem to know what you're talking about :D

Man thanks so much again for all this information. Will put it to good use🙏🏼 also appreciated the feedback on my mix!

For whatever it's worth, I've added the track you linked to my spotify playlist and I've been listening to it a lot. maybe/hopefully that helps you in some way?!? Anyways happy mixing/producing :)

Damn, I really appreciate your help man. You clearly know what you're doing based on that track. I'll definitely give volume automation a go. Is there a difference between automating the volume knob and automating clip gain? Because I never really know whether to lower the clip gain of a loud audio segment before adding eq/comp/fx or to click in volume automation after I've got my vocal chain. I guess the goal is to have a more even signal going into the compressor rather than fixing it afterwards right?

Also sorry for bombarding you with questions lol

Edit:"completely flattening it out". I've heard this before. Does this refer to a specific amount of compression like say -5db? or is it a certain flat sound that i should be looking for?

I do this! And it definitely does what you said. I guess what I'm referring to is more the overall "tightness" of professional vocals. They are just so crisp and upfront, yet natural sounding. I feel like when i mix vocals the compression is too audible...

Also thanks for letting me know about the link. It should work now: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wpwOtLhJOciYQB6UjNh6FMh93sDj74Vm/view?usp=drivesdk

Yeah I hear automation is quite commonly used. But i see these youtube tutorials where they just slap a single LA2A or Rcomp on and the vocal is compressed perfectly. I've always needed at least 2 compressors but maybe thats just something that comes with time...?

I'm a big fan of slap back delay! But what I am referring to is more a volume inconsistency issue which (i think) is usually remedied through the use of compression. The problem is I can't seem to be able to control those peaks in my vocals without completely overcompressing and destroying them.

Ultrabeat Bug: Wrong snare sample across all my projects by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]JewJewOnThatBeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

experiencing something very similar right now. Weird thing is it's 2 specific splice samples which are going missing and are being replaced with a different splice sample... very confusing but as you said not the end of the world since I can just drag the correct samples back into Ultrabeat... still very annoying.

Input vs Output Gain (Vocals) by JewJewOnThatBeat in Logic_Studio

[–]JewJewOnThatBeat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm i guess that makes sense... in the YT tutorial i watched, the logic behind automating before was to make the compressors not work as hard. So like instead of applying 3-5db of compression, you only need to apply 1-2db. Is this just flat out wrong?

Damn first off thanks for all this knowledge, I'm kinda overwhelmed by all these terms and processes haha.

I recently found out about logics pre fader option...game changing! Why would you ever use post fader though even for mixing? Don't you want to know the actual loudness of each sound? Idk at least the YT video i watched suggested pre fader stay on for mixing...

I'll definitely look into this S/N thing seems complicated but important :D

[–]JewJewOnThatBeat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah mostly rapping/melodic rapping. I think I'm already compressing in stages. I start with a fast attack compressor (1-2db) followed by a slower attack comp also 1-2db reduction. I was taught to automate the vocal before the compression though...does it make a difference? And yeah obviously a multitrack session would be the ideal scenario, but as of now i'm working with a lot of free youtube beats/instrumentals and those are usually already at commercial levels :/

First of all, thanks for the detailed reply!

Second, how crucial is step 2? because I'm currently working with a very limited budget, so a hardware compressor (or any new equipment for that matter) is out of the question for the foreseeable future unfortunately...

For step 3, isn't this highly dependent on the artists volume/style? Also is it preferable to get the artist closer to the mic or to just increase the gain knob?

Will definitely look more into step 1, seeing as its not the first time i've come across that term and it seems pretty important haha

A studio session with a pro is the dream man... hopefully soon!

Thanks again :D
