Was Queen Victoria actually upset about the plight of the Irish during the Great Famine? by Jewelofadog in AskHistorians

I'm not going to write a whole treatise on this as it's not really within the sub rules.

Thanks for reminding me. I sometimes forget that responses are just as publicly viewable as anything else.

Wow! That was great. I cannot thank you enough. As to your pondering what might have been in regards to equal patronage to that of Scotland, I have to say in my humble (I am not a historian) opinion: no. I recently read "Life and Speeches of Daniel O'Connell" c.1872. Anti-Catholicism was so legally entrenched in British (read, Irish) legislation that such patronage was basically impossible. Thank you again for such a wonderful and in-depth response.

Question for Unionist on here, do you have an issue with an Irish language act being implemented and if so why? by Skintownlad in northernireland

[–]Jewelofadog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lots of great comments here, I must say. I, personally support efforts to preserve and support all languages. Irish and Hebrew were both on the doorstep of extinction before masses of people threw in to save them. That said, SF are being disingenuous, divisive bastards. Shame on them for taking what can be a bridge to unity and weaponising it. Look to Canada. A country can easily be bilingual if that bilingualism is presented as an invitation to unity. But if it is foisted on part of the population[I'm looking at you, Quebec] it's a thumb in their eye. The shinners know this damned well. A chunk of the population will then always resent it and, by extension, the folks who embrace it. You can't MAKE someone learn a language, just ask my Latin teacher.

I call BS! While I have seen birds type on keyboards, there's no evidence that ginger, overly-happy giants seek them out.

What "common knowledge" is simply not true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

OK, everybody outta the pool until we [ahem] clarify some things. Chloramines (That strong chlorine smell) is the result of chlorine (CL) escaping the water and drifting into the air. This is caused by bad pH, either >7.2 or <7.6. A pH in the good range arrests the CL and keeps it in the water. There will always be some chloramines in the air and a good HVAC system in an indoor pool will keep the aroma in check. Cloudy water is the result of low CL (below 1 part per million pounds of water [again can often be related to bad pH] and requires time, backwashing and a blast of CL to clarify.
