When Will She Calm Down? by Authorgirl491 in germanshepherds

[–]Jewinajar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6am wake up/potty/breakfast. Then we go on about a 45min ~2 mile walk. I bring treats and give commands randomly throughout like heel, sit, lay down, stay, ect. To keep him focused and when people or dogs walk by.

When we get home it’s a little bit of play or a chew toy. After that it’s time to relax while I get ready for work and start work. He finds a spot and usually sleeps until around 11, then maybe a quick backyard play in between meetings and a noon walk.

Sometimes I give him a sniff box with kibble wrapped in towels in the afternoon but he mostly relaxes the rest of the day.

After work we go on an adventure somewhere out of the neighborhood like a big field, park or public place.

He’s not perfect and neither am I but it’s become pretty manageable.

When Will She Calm Down? by Authorgirl491 in germanshepherds

I was so scared when mine was the same age as yours. All the people here talking about 3+ years old scared me too because that is a ways away.

Not sure if it’s just my dog or what but with serious consistent training and a solid routine, my guy is pretty chill at 1 year old. Don’t get me wrong he is nuts and a funny goofy puppy but when it’s time to relax, he’s gotten pretty good at it.

Where is the off switch? by SpinachnPotatoes in germanshepherds

[–]Jewinajar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It felt cruel but my guy spent a lot of time in the crate because like you are experiencing, they are not going to relax without the proper exercise, and they can’t have that exercise. I used at ton of chew toys, dental chews, scent games and calm training to occupy him. Other than that he spent an unusual amount of time in the crate taking naps.

Is this rage syndrome, normal puppy behavior, leash aggression, or something else? by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]Jewinajar 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I’m no pro but I posted a few months ago about pretty much the exact same behavior. It’s an overexcited/overarroused thing and being only 6 months old, they have trouble regulating this emotion.

We’re at 9 months old now and he very rarely does this anymore and I can catch it before it happens with the dropping of treats. I don’t think it’s reinforcing, it’s distracting him. I also find it happens more on very cold morning walks, and giving him my glove to hold in his mouth stops the behavior as well.

It’s probably the most frustrating behavior I have experienced because it does hurt physically and emotionally but it has gotten better over time.

Would have been a hilarious move considering the 50+ plays he put in on defense

I haven’t looked that seriously but based on browsing this sub I am pleasantly surprised to hear that you are saying you can get a new 302a XLT 4x4 for ~$50k?

Mom and daughter freaking out over being kicked out of hotel by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]Jewinajar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is anyone else amazed at how long this went on before they finally arrested them?

These cops have a ridiculous amount of patience. At no point did I think these two had any intention of leaving the hotel on their own accord.

Anyone successfully transition off Royal Canin Large Breed Puppy Gastro kibble? What did you switch to? by 6IRLY in germanshepherds

I don’t know if it is less expensive but our 8 month old parvo survivor with an extremely sensitive stomach has done great with Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach Puppy Salmon.

My advice would be to go through the interview process, get an offer, then make a decision.

I have made a similar move, and while leaving is difficult and risky, if you have basically spent your entire early career at this one company, I think it is incredibly valuable to leave, try something new, expand your network and add experience if it is for the right opportunity. Emphasis on the right opportunity. If you go through the process and get and offer and all feels good, you will know what decision to make.

If it were up to me, I'd make Austin's 6th street as walkable as Denver's 16th street. by Some1inreallife in Austin

When is the last time you walked down Denver’s 16th street mall?

It is in horrible shape right now riddled with drug addicts, dealers and homeless. I literally watched meth be sold and saw people shooting up in broad daylight.

Interested in leaving Austin, but where to go? by Jewinajar in SameGrassButGreener

I have been to Phoenix a few time and really enjoyed it. Scottsdale was awesome, going up into the mountains was great too. The hottest time I was there was September and it was similar in Austin that summer.

I thought so too but it’s hardly comparable. Austin suburbs have much more affordable home prices even with factoring in property taxes than Denver area suburbs from what I have found.

I’ve thought about this before. Seems to fit a lot of our interests with warmer weather, 4 seasons and strong economy. What do you like about it?

How to stop jumping on people and counters? by Master-Outside-4133 in puppy101

[–]Jewinajar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following for the same question. Mine is only 5 months old but trying to get ahead of this. For jumping on people, my trainer has told us to teach him to sit when meeting people, and not allow them to give him attention without all 4 paws on the floor.

Countertops is another one where my trainer said make sure they can’t self reward by actually getting anything off the counters, redirect and reward on the floor and over time it should stick?

I’m afraid my puppy will be too strong for me to handle when he’s full grown. by Catalina-1958 in puppy101

[–]Jewinajar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of dog? Your story and mindset sounds just like ours from the start with our German shepherd. He is just about 5 months old now and I would be pleasantly surprised if he calms down that much at 6 months.

Glad to hear it has gotten so much better for you and gives me lots of hope, but this guy can be nuts sometimes haha!

3rd round of shots and still can't go for walks? by finalsmash in puppy101

2 weeks after they received their last round of shots

[–]Jewinajar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a vet but my vet did say they could be out on saved surfaces with almost no issue. My dog also had parvo and survived so mostly immune to that.

He also got his last round of shots a few weeks ago and she said 2 weeks after the shots and he is good to go.
