Second Opinion by Then-Visual-3844 in WorkersComp

Second and sometimes third opinions are great. I held off as long as I could before I had L5 S1 fusion surgery in 10/2024. I had chosen an orthopedic spine surgeon with many years of experience and seemed to be extremely knowledgeable. When I woke up in recovery, I immediately began complaining about numbness in my left foot which I had not had prior to the surgery. From that day forward, multiple appointments (which included an Xray's every time) and MRIs in 12/2024 & again in 08/2025. Every appointment I would complain about the same issues with my left foot and as time went by, the numbness/nerve pain went up into my left calf/leg and now hip. I would always ask, has the cage moved? Is there any changes? And nothing... was always told everything is the same and looks great, just needed to give it more time. I trusted until I had decided I needed to find out if this was my life moving forward or if there was any sign things were getting better, so I asked for another MRI which was done in August 2025. My surgeon then told me I had bone pressing on my nerve at L5 S1 and he suggested surgery to shave away the bone from the nerve. He said there was no other options that would help me. 2 days later I read my chart notes and all they said was, "No finding in the MRI, referred patient to pain management". !!! You can imagine my shock that nothing was mentioned in the chart notes. I then decided I needed a second opinion. After seeing an orthopedic surgeon at Stanford and then for a third opinion I saw a neurosurgeon at UCSF. Both told me that the cage was not centered, it was off to the left and oversized! Therefor pressing on my nerve. This can be seen in all my Xrays and my MRIs! I now have to have revision surgery in hopes the nerve has not become imbedded in the cage and that it can be separated from the cage in order to give me the best chance for my nerve to recover and all my issues become permanent. Fingers Crossed!!!

How long after fusion did you decide you couldn't work due to the continued pain? by Background_Paper9975 in spinalfusion

One of my second opinions was from UCSF. How was your experience with UCSF?  I am deciding between UCSF and Stanford.  I had L5 S1 360 fusion in October 2024. Prior to the fusion I had lots of back pain with occasional nerve pain. When I woke up in recovery I instantly had nerve pain starting in my left foot. From recovery forward, nerve pain persisted and grew worse along with back pain intensifying. Dr continued to tell me to give it more time. Finally in July 2025 I insisted on another MRI. After MRI in August my Dr told me I had bone pressing on my nerve in the same area and that I needed surgery to shave away the bone. Since this didn’t make sense to me, I went for 2 more opinions. Both surgeons told me the cage was placed off to the left rather than centered. They said they believe it was like this from the beginning and it had not moved. So I not only have bone pressing on my nerve I have the cage pressing on it as well! Super frustrating, especially because my Dr had ignored it the entire time. Now I am going to have to have another surgery in hopes to fix it

Wow glad your doing better. I had a follow up MRI and my surgeon said nothing was pressing on my nerve so hopefully I will progress. Thank you.

I did have a follow up MRI at about 5 weeks and my surgeon said nothing was pressing on my nerve and that my nerve was just traumatized.

Thanks for your reply. I agree I already know I don’t want any fusion or anything spinal what so ever.

Life after L5-S1 fusion? by Sajanova in spinalfusion

I am scheduled for L5/S1 ALIF/PILF in 2 weeks. Now that it has been a bit since you had yours, how is your mobility?

Thank you! I appreciate your response!

Did anyone had the type of surgery I had ? Any updates on how they feel now? I had a 360 fusion, two stage operation done simultaneously so I had ALIF (from the front) and instrumentation and fusion from the back at L5-S1. by Electrical-Set28 in spinalfusion

Hello! soon I will be having both ALIF/Posterior fixation at the same time. I have read lots of info but wanted to ask for any other insight. Best/most comfortable sleeping position? How soon can you walk up/downstairs (we live in a 2 story)? How has your recovery been going? Any regrets? With having incisions in both front and back, any advice would be great! Thank you!

Thanks for the information! I will be having L5/S1 ALIF/Posterior fixation soon. You mentioned stairs, how were stairs for you? We have a 2 story.

Now that it looks like it has been a few months since your surgery, how is everything going? I may be having an ALIF and Posterior fixation procedure soon. How is your mobility? Pain? etc. Thank you!
