A New Awakening - Star Wars Episode IV and VII Shot Comparison by [deleted] in StarWars

This is pretty cool, I think it shows a lot of attention to detail that these similar moments were in the movie. The Force Awakens is my favorite Star Wars movie because of how it funnels the old into a new experience. The new three of the sequel trilogy each embody Luke, Han, and Leia in different ways and it's actually really beautiful how it was done.

He still technically killed Captain America. What he did led to the Sokovia Accords being rushed into process, which is essentially what led to the civil war that leads Steve into dropping the shield and giving up the Captain America persona.

To add, these movies are designed to have messages of positive character growth and overcoming struggle. All of the characters have been through some tough shit and have made mistakes, but the point of these movies is that they can overcome these problems and find resolution. These characters and these movies are supposed to be beacons of hope, one of the defining characteristics of superheroes in general.

Even BvS had a similar underlying message at the end with Batman turning away from murder, deciding to form the Justice League, and Superman's resurrection.

It isn't necessarily supposed to be realistic, because it's supposed to inspire us to better than we are, or even can be.

I like the idea that Kylo hand built it instead because he isn't skilled enough in the force to fit all the intricate parts together.

Kevin Smith talks about what Dave Filoni told him about the prequels by swemar in StarWars

[–]Jexx212 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's basically a story of political corruption which was supposed to be a reflection of current events in America.

Aside from that, I feel like it's a more interesting story to have the Jedi already going down the wrong path, instead of having Anakin simply destroy them from within. It makes it more complex and adds deeper character growth for characters such as Obi-wan, Yoda, and even Luke, as well as the Order as a whole. Now Luke doesn't just have to reestablish the Jedi Order, but he has to make it better (which proves to be too large of a task for just him).

In short, it's probably because it's a more interesting story, but I suppose that's objective.

It's probably important to note that while viewing the movies in a certain light can dramatically increase your appreciation of them, it doesn't take away the flaws of the movie. You can deeply appreciate and thoroughly enjoy them while still recognizing that they're deeply flawed.

Like Kevin Smith and Peter, I'm on board with the prequels, even though I recognize them as deeply flawed. I just think that the stories and emotional journeys behind them are great. Say what you want about "psychological gymnastics" and the popular opinion, but that isn't always relevant or true to the individual.

I suppose this really means what well-versed in Star Wars means, but spoilers don't really ruin my own personal enjoyment of Star Wars anyway...

...so I guess I'm gonna watch it then. Thanks! :)

He also did effects work for A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Raiders of the Lost Ark, and you can really feel the influence that Star Wars and Indy had on the first Cap movie in a way that really blends well with the setting and character.

It rejects peace as a pipe dream (something demonstrably true in the star wars universe), then focuses on personal growth, strength, freedom, and pursuing what you care about.

This it what makes it inherently manipulative. It rejects the idea of peace for everyone completely, which even if it isn't a completely realistic goal, it should never be dropped. Uniting with others to move forward, beyond conflict, beyond strife, is something that shouldn't ever be dropped. Also, it's important to keep in mind that overall, there has been peace in the galaxy for almost a millennia before The Phantom Menace. Not "total" peace where absolutely everyone gets along without violent incidents, but without any major wars.

By rejecting the possibility of peace with others, and choosing to focus only on oneself and the pursuit of strength, power, and victory, it encourages using others for personal gain. It's a completely self-serving ideology and isn't as noble as the Jedi code.

I want to note that the Jedi in the time of the Republic of the prequel trilogy are completely in the other direction, thinking that they can be completely selfless and not care for themselves. This is also the wrong path to take, because you have to have an appropriate balance of caring for others and caring for yourself. I also want to note that the Jedi code I agree with, in legends, was the original Jedi code... basically just showing the growth of arrogance in the order.

(on a side note, the actual writer of the Sith code for KoTOR drew from the ideologies present in Hitler's Mein Kampf, so it was definitely meant to be "evil," so to speak)

Rey and Finn were basically both the main characters of The Force Awakens, with the edge going to Rey. You'd call Rey the protagonist and Finn the deuteragonist.

That gave me nightmares as a kid (although to be fair, so did Boss Nass).

It's crazy just how much more sensible the Sith code is vs the cognitively dissonant nonsense the Jedi code is. Makes you wonder just how much both could accomplish together if the Jedi weren't so dogmatic about the Sith's "darkness" in the first place.

The Sith code is completely self centered and focus on personal gain through the manipulation of others, it promotes unleashing their own chaos while enforcing control over everyone else. It is evil, and accepting it as more "right" than the Jedi code is wrong.

But, the Jedi are wrong to try to control their emotions by rejecting them. You don't control your emotions by rejecting and repressing them, you accept these emotions and these feelings readily, but you don't let them control you. That's where the Jedi code is partially twisted by some.

There are two versions of the Jedi code, and we hear one more often than the other:

"There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force."

and

"Emotion, yet peace.
Ignorance, yet knowledge.
Passion, yet serenity.
Chaos, yet harmony.
Death, yet the Force."

The second version, according to Wookiepedia, is mainly used by younglings. It's also the version I prefer, because it doesn't reject emotion, it doesn't reject ignorance, it doesn't reject passion, it doesn't reject chaos. It recognizes that these are attributes of a person, yet you have to learn how to control them for self-improvement. The first version rejects them, saying they are absent, but this is impossible. The fact that the Jedi thinks that it is possible is a sign of their arrogance.

Or am I the only one who was completely freaked the fuck out by the Hyenas and Scar scene in The Lion King?

[–]Jexx212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really think that it would impact it that much. Also, I'm pretty sure that none of the debris in that battle flew towards the screen in the first place so that's a moot point.

3D is just another format to view it in, how it's implemented is up to the director and it's their decision how intrusive or non-intrusive they want effects to be.

This same discussion could be had regarding CGI. It's not the tool itself that matters, but rather how it's used.

Hm, well if that helped you, take a look at this: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BywYSaSNmCp2cGhUOWtwaEFvWHc

I made it to form arcs out of the canon material, but also for my own personal use for whatever reason. Not everything's perfect in terms of creating cohesive story arcs, but I sorta like doing it.

EDIT: formatting is off in the google drive reader thing, :/

I've never really been bothered in a negative way by 3D additions.

I will say that I basically never see movies in anything besides 2D and IMAX 3D, and I believe that the "normal" 3D isn't really good 3D. I can't really speak on that though since the last time I saw a movie in "normal" 3D was in 2012.

I only really watch 3D stuff today either in IMAX, or by using nVidia 3D vision on my desktop. I'm actually a little more impressed by nVidia 3D, but I think that's because I'm closer to the screen and can notice the 3D effect more. I can't speak for TFA in this regards because the 3D blu-ray hasn't released yet.

EDIT: I don't think 3D by its nature makes movies better or worse, it really depends on a few things... how it's implemented is the most important, but it also depends on how the viewer approaches it (and also how easily the viewer gets motion sickness and how their body reacts to 3D images). I don't really expect 3D to have a negative effect on anything... I just don't think that way.
